Winter craft fair & Earth bites

We played real volleyball today! We put all our skills together in some fantastic games. We will play a few more games before wrapping up this unit. It has been great to see the confidence grow! SERVE, BUMP, SET, SMASH! In math, we learned how to determine if the decimal of a standard fraction will terminate or repeat. We used three different strategies. It was so awesome to see the lights going off when we used the strategy of prime factorizing the denominator of a fraction in simplest form. That was my moment of the day! The afternoon was spent with earthbites making different flavoured popcorn, coconut milk hot chocolate and prepping for the craft fair. Today was good day:) #thelearningneverstops

Part 1: List 4 strategies for determining if a fractions decimal equivalent will repeat or not.
Part 2: Type out the 16 French phrases for this weeks word work and number them form 1-16 (please do this in random order)

1.If the denominator is a factor of 10,100,1000 you get the point. Make it equivalent and then change it to a decimal after

2.Find prime factor family and see if’s a repeating decimal if it shows different numbers than 2,5 in the family.

3.Do more work which is pretty dumb with long division

Put the fraction into lowest terms then use prime factorization.
Divide until you finish putting zeros at the end.
Reduce/Increase the fraction to 10,100,1000,10000,etc.

1) if the denominator is a factor of 10, 100 or 1000 make an equivalent fraction with a denominator of 10,100 or 1000 and then write it as a decimal
2) find the prime factorization of the denominator. If prime factors are only 2 and 5 then the fraction will terminate if there are other factors it will repeat.

If the denominator is a factor of 10, 100, 1000, then make an equivalent fraction with the denominator of 10.100, 1000. After change that fraction to a decimal.

Change the fraction in lowest terms and find the prime factorization of the denominator. If the numbers are only 2 and 5 then the number will terminate because 2 and 5 are factors of 10,100,1000

Waste your time and do very very long division.

Just simply use a calculator to end the day.

Ways to find a repeating decimal -
If the denominator is in the form of x/ 10 ʸ, it is not a repeating decimal, you don't really need to put it into decimal form.

First, put your fraction in lowest possible terms. Then, take your denominator and prime factorize it. If it looks like the form:

5 ˣ × 2 ʸ

Your fraction is a terminating decimal. In a simple way, this means that if your prime factorization of the denominator returns either
(1) 2 is it's only prime factor
(2) 5 is it's only prime factor
(3) The only prime factors are a combination of 2 or 5
then your fraction is terminating. Anything except those three circumstances will result in a repeating decimal.

Third, do long division. This is actually one of my favorite ways to do most repeating decimals, for a reason that's extremely hard to explain without a pen and paper, sadly, it's an extremely easy way to find out whether a fraction is repeating or not in most cases.

Lastly, use a calculator. Watch out for the fact that calculators usually round quotients off at the end - you may wish to use the Internet instead.

Part 1

You first have to put the fraction into lowest terms, in other words, you just simplify the number.

You make the fraction, if possible, into a denominator with 10s,100s, 100s, and so on.

Later, you just divide, and add a zero to the end of the number every time the divisor still has some remaining numbers. You could easily start to tell once the numbers start repeating.

Lastly, you just use a calculator. Beware, all calculators round their numbers, so WATCH OUT!
