From January 17, 1942 - June 3, 2016, lived Muhammad Ali, a professional boxer, civil activist, and philanthropist. “The greatest”, as they called him, is one of the greatest boxers ever to roam the Earth. Born and in the great city of Louisville, Kentucky, he started training from the little age of 12. Only at the age of 18, he had won the gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the 1960 Summer Olympics. Not long after, he turned professional. After 1961, he changed to Islam and changed to Muslim. He took to calling himself, Muhammad Ali. In the following years, he managed to win the world heavyweight championship against Sonny Liston at the age of 22 and also lose the title from refusing to get drafted for the army. Ali publicly cited his beliefs opposing the War which made him arrested and found guilty. When he appealed to the Supreme Court, they flipped the conviction in the year 1971. Because of the 4 years of not training, he lost an important part of boxing, age. From there, he slowed down in his career. Later in 1981, Ali formally resigned from being a professional boxer. While his career may have ended, he continued to advocate for civil rights.

"Don't count the days, make the days count." -Muhammad Ali

Cassius Clay, the first three-time heavyweight champion, was born on January 17, 1942, in Louisville, Kentucky. One of the most influential athletes ever to exist, "The Greatest" was not only a boxer, but also an activist, entertainer, and philanthropist. Starting training at the age of 12, it took him only six years to win a gold medal in the 1960 Summer Olympics in the light heavyweight division. Becoming a Muslim one year after his first major championship, Cassius Clay changed his name to "Muhammad Ali". Although he became known as Muhammad Ali, the athlete refused to officially change his name because he did not see the point of asking a white person to merely change a name. Because of his speed and agility, Muhammad became an undefeatable boxer over the next six years, winning twenty-nine matches and never losing a single game. In 1966, Muhammad Ali was asked to join the military to fight in the Vietnam War, but he rejected the request. Even when people threatened to remove his title of a boxer and take away all his medals, Muhammad did not hesitate to say no. "I ain't got nothing against Viet Cong," he once said. Not allowed to box at any matches for the next three-and-a-half years, Muhammad had to make a living by giving speeches at universities. He continued to talk about what he believed and did not show any fear in standing up for his beliefs. When he resumed boxing, Muhammad started to lose some games, and his career soon slowed down . Although his career was not as successful as his early years, Muhammad continued to obtain his spirited and vivacious personality. On June 3, 2016, due to being diagnosed of Parkinson's Syndrome, Muhammad Ali, one of the greatest athletes of the twentieth century, died of a septic shock.

Muhammad Ali was a black American heavyweight boxer born in 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky as Cassius Clay. As a boxer, Ali was the first three time heavyweight boxing champion and was known for his speed and agility inside the ring. As a normal citizen, Ali was known to be charismatic, but also very outspoken and brash. Ali's first title was very important to his career, as no one thought he stood a chance against his opponent. One reporter was even told to drive back and forth from the hospital to the ring just so when Ali was knocked out, the reporter could be the first to interview him. Soon after Cassius changed his name to Muhammad Ali, but he was still referred to as Cassius Clay as Ali had not officially changed his name. When the Vietnam War was started Cassius was to be enlisted in the military, when he refused, Ali was stripped of his titles and suspended from boxing for three years. This was the time when Ali was known for his charisma, he spent these three years doing talks in front of large crowds, where he would speak about equality and the end of racism. Muhammad Ali was born in 1942. His real name when he was born was Cassius Clay. He was a boxer and a 3-time heavyweight champion. He won the light heavyweight boxing division at the 1960 Summer Olympics. He changed his name to Cassius X because he felt that the name Clay wasn't for him. The leader of Islam, which he was a part of, gave him the name Muhammad Ali which means "beloved of God". He did not change his name legally because he didn't want to ask a white man to do it. During the Vietnam War, he did not join because he did not feel there was any point. They took his titles away and did not let him fight again for 3 and a half years. While he was not allowed to fight, he talked about equality. Eventually, the court let him fight again. When he retired, he helped a lot of people and saved lives. He had a disease called Parkinson's, so when he was getting older, he had trouble talking. Muhammad Ali fought for equality and freedom, and represented Muslims in America. Cassius Clay was born on January 17, 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky. He was the grandson of a black slave. He was known to be fast and agile during boxing matches, and he was well-liked and popular outside the ring. Although he was outspoken and arrogant, some people described him to be “fun to be around” and “an interesting character.” Cassius Clay won a gold medal in the 1960 summer Olympics. In 1964 he had his first official win as the heavyweight boxing champion against Liston. Later on, he followed a religious belief and joined Islam, so he changed his name to Muhammed Ali. In 1967 he won 29 fights in a row in six and a half years. After those wins, the army asked him to help win the Vietnam war, but Ali refused because the Vietnamese never did anything to him. He thought that it was wrong to start a war against them. As a result, his champion title was taken away. For the next three and a half years he couldn’t box, so Ali gave speeches at universities. Those speeches were mostly about equality. Ali returned to boxing in 1971 in a match against his friend Joe Fraser. It was his first professional loss. Then in 1974 he defeated Fraser and continued winning in the next few years. Finally, in 1980 he lost the heavyweight boxing champion title to a boxer named Larry Holmes. After that Ali fought a few more matches and retired at 40 years old. In about 1985 people noticed that he was slurring, which is a sign of Parkinson’s disease. Ali didn’t give up. He continued giving speeches and showed up in public events. For instance, in 1996 he carried the Olympic torch for that year’s summer Olympics. Muhammed Ali was a significant person in history because he was the first 3-time heavyweight champion of the world, also because of his commitment to justice and peace. Even though he was fighting against Parkinson’s disease, he continued to be an inspiration to others. Just like his performances in the boxing ring, Muhammed Ali never backed down. He stood up for what he believed and fought for his life.

He started boxing at the age of twelve, and amazingly Muhammad had won a gold medal after just six years in 1960. Muhammad was one of the greatest boxer in the 20th century. He was the first ever fighter to achieve the heavy weight title three times. Muhammad original name was Cassius Clay, he then changed his name to Muhammad Ali in 1964 after joining the Nation of Islam. The military wanted him to join them to fight, but Muhammad refused, and he was punished by stripping his titles and accomplishments and was banned from his career for three years. During the three years, he was making speeches to people about anti-racism and equality. Everyone had got inspired by him, so they wanted to help. After the three years had past, Muhammad went against Joe Frazier, and he unfortunately lost. Muhammad was having a really hard time keeping up, so he decided to retire in 1981. One of the greatest athletes of all time, Muhammad Ali, born as Cassius Clay, otherwise known as ‘The Greatest’ was born on January 17th, 1942. Muhammad Ali began to train as boxer at the age of 12. As he became successful in being a boxer, he won a gold medal in 1960. After some time, Ali started to believe in Muslim and changed his religion to Islam. That’s how he changed his name from Cassius Clay to Muhammed Ali. He didn’t legally change his name because he did not want to ask a White man to change his name. When others called him Cassius, Ali would question ‘What’s my Name’ back at them. Because of his religious beliefs, Muhammad refused to go to war and because of that he was arrested and even his boxing titles were stripped. All of this didn’t concern Ali at all. 3 years later Muhammed was allowed in boxing once again. He continually won 29 fights in 6 and ½ years. In 1978, Muhammad Ali lost and in 1981 he retired from Boxing. Sadly, on June 3rd 2016, Muhammad Ali passed away.
