Today after PE students spent time going through their inquiry journals and doing a self-reflection on the competencies we have been working on. On Wednesday they will have a Content evaluation. Today's students also completed their word work test from last week. The afternoon was spent focussing on updating fresh grade and working on the underground railroad mapping project.
1.) WORD WORK: You will get new words tomorrow.

2.) SCIENCE INQUIRY: Competency reflection Due by Wednesday. SC TEST WEDNESDAY!

3.)UNDERGROUND RAILROAD MAP: Grid must be complete by tomorrow at 9am

4.) POST A RESPONSE: Let's work help our classmates prepare for the science test!
  • Post  4 questions related to electricity and magnetism.
  1. Include at least 2 different types of questions. (Explanation questions, short answer questions, true or false questions, or multiple choice questions)
  • Reply to a classmates post and answer their questions.
  • Tomorrow you will read the answers to your questions and give feedback.

Another week of great learning comes to an end. This week we returned to our criteria charts and students have been working hard at fine-tuning behaviour expectations. I really appreciate the effort everyone put in to making sure our class remains a smooth running learning machine. This week was a big week as we wrapped up our science unit on electricity and magnetism and also wrapped up our basketball unit. We also launched our underground railroad history and mapping project which students will be working on for the next two weeks. Let's have a strong finish up to spring break. Have a great weekend everybody see you on Monday.

POST A RESPONSE:
  • Today you completed the final science challenge and used everything you have learned about electricity and magnetism to build a simple motor. We also spent time explaining how the motors worked using since language.
Learning Intention: I can explain in writing how a simple motor works.

Success Criteria:
  1. Includes the following science language: battery, electrons, electricity, complete circuit, solenoid coil, attract, repell
  2. Explains what makes the coil spin
  3. Explanation is clear and only includes important information
  • Read another students post and check it against the success criteria.
  • Give some peer feedback to help them improve or some praise if they have included all success criteria
  • Edit/revise based on the feedback you receive.

Today was the final day on our inquiry into electricity and magnetism. Students finish the final challenge by building a working electric motor. It was amazing to see all the ideas and to see students use everything they have learned throughout the past five weeks to create their motors. Outstanding work both division one and two. Next week students will go through their inquiry journals finding evidence of their ideas and thinking. They will also have a content evaluation next Wednesday.
POST A RESPONSE:
  • PAR Holiday for those who have completed all their PAR's this week.
  • If you have not completed all of your PAR's please complete them all tonight. If you have not completed them by tomorrow you will receive another homework alert.
  • Post a message here when when ALL of your PAR's for the week are complete.

SAY NO TO BULLYING!

2/23/2022

Picture
Today was a good day at school. Many students wore pink today to say no to bullying and to support diversity. Thank you to the SOAR committee for their hard work today. All students received small pink shirts with positive messages on them. In the morning we reviewed behaviour success criteria and students responded well. Students finished fine-tuning their essays marked their math from yesterday and then carried on with their final science challenge. We finished off the day with music.
COMPLETE YOUR PAR FROM YESTERDAY. I will be doing a PAR homework check tomorrow and you'll receive a homework alert if both your PAR"S from yesterday and today or not complete.

POST A RESPONSE:
  1. We just started our integer unit and we have been learning that there are negative numbers opposite the positive numbers on a number line. Because there is nothing tangible to see with a negative number we can better  understand them by connecting them to a situation or scenarios in the world.
  2. For your PAR today I would like you to explain 3 different situations that can be used to help understand what negative integers are and 3 situations  that can be used to understand positive integers. Make sure you clearly describe your example and explain why they  represents a positive or negative integer.

After music in the morning students completed their word pretest. This week's words are all part of our social studies project on the underground railroad. After lunch students did a self-assessment on their Olympic symbols and project and then they continued learning about integers. In the afternoon we wrapped up our basketball unit and started the final electricity and magnetism science inquiry challenge.

SCIENCE INQUIRY IN ACTION!
Today students actively participated in inquiry learning in our electricity and magnetism unit. Students learned about variables in scientific method and then were challenged to prove that electricity creates magnetism by removing all variables except the one they were testing. Students came very close and with some guidance were able to prove that moving electrons create magnetism. What a great day of hands-on inquiry learning. In math students worked on problem-solving questions involving ratios and proportions.

POST A RESPONSE:
  • Use what  you no about electricity and magnetism to explain the meaning behind the following jokes. What makes them funny? Explain the double meaning in the jokes.

Today's students were finally ready to play a real basketball game. Students learned their offensive and defensive positioning, how to match up with a check and how to move throughout their playing area effectively. It was a slow start but students got the hang of it by the end of the morning. In math we started our mini unit on the rate ratio and proportion. In the afternoon students worked hard finishing up their pop art projects which is due Wednesday.
1.) WORD WORK: Analysis and test Friday
