Another amazing day with the students in Division 1.  We started the day with a short work period where students were able to work on their powerful responses, and push their learning with the novel group members.  After that we had a Math inquiry. Students worked to see if there was a pattern or connection to circumference and diameter by spliting into groups and each groups measuring 6 different and random sized circular objects. Oh Pi, it was really close to 3.14, maybe this is not just some random number.  After recess we had a guest speaker come in to speak to the grade 6 & 7 classes about "Digital Citizenship and the Online World". In the afternoon we had another science block and some time for Social Studies project work.

The day started with a Laurier SOAR assembly, and fitness Friday.  After recess, we had a little story time, and the students were introduced to Sir Cumference.  This story lead us into our new math measurement unit.  A little time to work on Art or Novel study took us to lunch.  After lunch, we looked at crystalline structures, and how their particles are ordered.  We made a supersaturated sugar solution, and will now wait to see if we can form some large sugar crystals.  The day ended with a little time outside.

REMEMBER TO BE AT SCHOOL AT 8AM ON MONDAY.
IMPORTANT:
  • MONDAY FIELD TRIP if you haven't returned your form you will not be able to go on the field trip.

Sunny day at Animal Farm

5/23/2019

Picture
Today the students had an opportunity to walk their city in the sunshine, as we made our way to Granville Island. At Granville Island we watched the play 'Animal Farm' put on by the Arts Umbrella, at the waterfront Theatre.  A group of high school students from around Vancouver have been working all year to prepare for this performance. After watching the performance, the students had some time at Granville Island market at to eat their lunch.  From there, we had a brief stop at the water park before making our way back to the skytrain.  Perfect weather for some exercise, the Arts, and learning to be out in public.

Today was a very exciting day of learning. Our guest teacher Ms. Nguyen started off the day by taking us to the gym to work on our field hockey skills. Following this, student's worked on their cross curricular math and fine arts activity. They are making amazing geometric designs using reflections, translations and rotations. After recess, students were introduced to their new math unit on measurement (see Learning intentions below). The afternoon was spent with some exciting demonstrations to teach students the differences between physical and chemical changes. We closed off the day getting deep into or inquiry on religions.

  • We also did a mini lab to see if we could support this idea by asking "How does temperature affect the rate at which a solute dissolves in a solvent?
  • We used varrious temperatures of water as our solvent and red food colouring as our solute.
  • In your own words write a short paragraph to explain what happened in the experiment, and how that might relate to the movement of atoms in varrious states.
