Skating and Inquiry In Action

Today we had our last skating session. It has been great to see the skating improve throughout our time on the ice. If skating is something you really enjoy, check out the programs they have at a local community centre. After skating we spent some time on our Inquiry project. I was especially impressed with how well students ran their knowledge building circles today! Outstanding work Div 1 and 2. Your inquiry skills are improving with each session.

3) Irony Lesson:
  • Irony is defined as: 1. the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning: the irony of her reply, “How nice!” when I said I had to work all weekend.
Examples of irony:

Someone who talks a lot having nothing to say when asked a question.

A whaling ship being used to save marine animals after a tsunami.

There are three main types of Irony:

  • Dramatic irony – This occurs when the reader or audience understands more about the events of a story than a character.

Situational irony – This occurs when what actually happens is the opposite of what is expected or appropriate.

Verbal irony – A character says one thing but really means the opposite.
4) Post A Response:
  • How many example of Irony can you find in Angel Square? (Can you find 3?)
  • Explain why the example represents irony.
  • Extra: Can you determine what type of irony it is?
  • Reply to another students post and comment on their examples

Area model for multiplying fractions with no whole numbers.
We got into using an area model to show the multiplication of decimals today. This is a great way for students to show that they understand what is happening when they multiply decimals. In the afternoon, we spent some time reviewing the criteria for a research notebook and saw some examples of how  to help organize research notebooks to show information and thinking and throughout the inquiry process.

1) Reminders:
  • Skating tomorrow: We will leave school at 1 pm
  • Intermediate Winter Concert Tomorrow.  9:15 am

Some of us even got into proving multiplication and division of fractions. After another exciting chapter of Angel Square we spent, some time working on our digital story collages. Students are working hard to learn the photo editing software and create a unique picture story while incorporating the principles art and design: Proportion and Balance. For the last hour of the day groups got to work on their French cooking show scripts. The scripts are due by Friday so I will make sure we have more time to work on them this week.
