Pink Day!

2/28/2018

Picture
Today was pink day where were we all come together to spread the word that bullying is not okay! People all around the world wore pink today to supportive the cause.  Students did their second dramatic reading today with a new partner. They chose an area to work on from the oral presentation rubric and presented their piece. Their partner scored their presentation base on the success criteria. Tomorrow we will increase the size of the audience and present again. In math, we we had an adding integers check in and then moved on to subtracting positive and negative integers. After lunch, we had a school wide pink day assembly and worked on our bodies in motion art project.
1) Reminders & Homework:
  • Choose a new excerpt for you dramatic reading (approx. 1min long)
2) Student Led Conferences:
  • Please sign up for a conference time (click here)
  • I made several mistakes with the last form and lost some of the information while trying to make the corrections.  Please make your selection again. Thank you!
3) Post A Response:
  • What part of the dramatic reading presentation is a strength for you? Which part is a stretch?
  • What action will you take to improve in this area?
  • List the tips that have been shared with you so far? There have been 4 so far. Can you remember all 4 tips?

Adding Integers

2/26/2018

Picture
Zoomba got us pumped up for learning in first period today! After Zomba we had our goal setting evaluation and a basketball evaluation. In math, we learned how to  add integers. One way to help remember whether the answer will be larger or smaller is to think of positive and negative integers as happiness or sadness. Use the guide to the left to help you! After singing and playing ukulele in music we finished the day off continuing our inquiry into electricity and magnetism by investigating series circuits.
1) Reminders and Homework:
  • Math Focus p. 245-247
  • Inquiry Journal Reflection for parallel, series circuit challenges
  • Zoomba and Tennis Fee and Form: Ray, Eric N, Veer, Cynthia, Sophia, Kevin, Coco
2) Student Led Conferences:
  • Dear Parents/Guardians,
Student led conferences will be held on March 7th and 8th.  On both of these days your child will be dismissed at 2:00 pm. This is an opportunity for your child to share their work at school with you. Students will take you through their Fresh Grade portfolio and share some highlights of their learning. If you are not able to make it on either of those days, or if you would prefer, students will be able to conduct their conference at home. School conferences will be 15 minutes long. Please be aware that there will be multiple groups of students and parents in the classroom during each session.
  • Please complete the survey to choose your preference for the student led conference.
  • Student Led Conference Sign Up (click here)

3.) POST A RESPONSE:
  • Today, you investigated different ways of making light bulbs work using different types of circuits.
  • Click here and complete this online electrical challenge!  Follow the instructions at the bottom of the link.
  • After completing the challenge, answer this question: How does the brightness of the two lamps compare with the lamp on its own? What is your hypothesis for this?
  • In addition to completing everything above, write about what you learned in Science today (at school and at home).

Beijing Map
We also stared a new fine arts project on drawing people in motion and incorporating proper proportions in the human body and using proportion to protray objects as very large or very small. Look for some amazing art coming soon!
Today we completed our Beijing mapping assignment and had a pretest on the learning intentions we will be covering in the integers unit.

1) Reminders:
  • Zoomba and Tennis form an fee: Daniel, Ray, Eric N, Veer, Cooper Cynthia, Sophia, Coco, Queen, kevin
  • Have fun in the snow!
2) Post A Response:
  • Go play in the snow and then write a poem about it!
  • Use several examples of figurative language in your poem
  • Reply to another students poem and identify what figurative language was used in the poem

Odes To Winter

2/22/2018

Picture
Today we were inspired by the beautiful day of snow and sunshine so we decided to write Odes to winter season. We covered 4 types of figurative language including, similes, metaphors, personification and onomatopoeia and then went for a walk in the community and collected powerful language, including thoughts, feelings and descriptors to use in our writing. After writing the odes we presented them in a Battle Of The Ode competition. All odes including the Grand Ode Champion winners are posted below. Please enjoy!

1) Reminders:
  • Beijing maps due tomorrow by 3 pm unless you have a homework pass
  • Zumba & Tennis form and fee, DUE TOMORROW!
2) Post A Response:
  • Write an ode to to one of the following class themes: integers, electricity, magnetism, reading strategies, basketball, The World's Worst Class Trip Ever Novel, Beijing Map or The Forbidden City novel
  • Odes must include: 1 simile, 1 metaphor, 1 personification, 1 onomatopia
  • Comment on another ode with a compliment
  • Make sure all poem content  fits in with the Laurier Code of Conduct: S.O.A.R

Integers

2/21/2018

Picture
Today we had our science vocabulary quiz, worked on our beijing maps and got started on an integers unit in math. We learned a little about axioms in mathematics. Axioms are statements that are taken to be true within a system of logic. They are starting points from which other statements  can be made. Example: axiom: a+b = b+a , therefore we can conclude that 4+3 = 3+4.  With integers we agree that every positive integer has an opposite. 5 and -5. From these accepted truths we can do amazing things with math.
1)Reminders and Homework:
  • Math p. 89-90
2) Post A Response:
  • Post 2 examples or situations in the word that could be used to represent positive integers and negative integers. (2 examples for positive and 2 for negative)

Scientific Variables

Proving electricity creates magnetism!
Today we worked hard on our mapping project and went over our math unit evaluation from last week. Parents, please check on Fresh Grade to see the math evaluation and reflection. We will be moving on to an integers unit starting tomorrow. In the afternoon we continued our inquiry into electricity and magnetism. We constructed complete circuits, learned about variables in scientific investigations, and set up a demonstration to proved that electrify creates magnetism.
1) Reminders:
  • Complete your science inquiry journal entry for today
  • Show your parents your math evaluation
  • Beijing map is due Friday
2) Post A Response:
  • Make up a short experiment. Explain how to carry it out in your post. Be sure to include an independent variable (what you are changing) and a dependent variable (what you are testing)
  • Respond to another students post and state what the independent and independent variables are in the experiment
  • Answer the reply to your post and let them know if they are correct or not.

Beijing maps well underway!
Today both division 1 and 2 had their math unit evaluations and division 1 finished their reading strategy evaluations. Well done everyone for completing a big evaluation day. We spent the afternoon working on the Beijing mapping project as well as getting some well needed exercise and sunshine. Have great long weekend!
1) Reminders and Due Dates:
  • Science vocabulary test postponed until Tuesday, February 20
  • Finish grid and find all of Alex's Beijing locations by Tuesday, February 20
  • Complete Beijing map due Friday, February 23rd
  • NO SCHOOL MONDAY!
2) Post a response:
  • Which of the following diagrams are a complete circuit and will light the build. Explain why or why not for each answer. Use science language in your explanations.

Circuit Diagrams
What is complete circuit? Which build will light? Why?

Today we had our math pretest on rate, ratio and percent and got the first steps of the Beijing map completed. Students created their grids and figured out the ratios and scale factors and then got started making their scaled up grids. Make sure you finish up the math pre-test tonight and prepare any questions you may have about the concepts  covered in the unit. Tomorrow we will go over the entire pre-test to get ready for the unit review evaluation Friday!
1) Homework & Reminders:
  • Finish math pretest for tomorrow (click here)
  • Math unit test Friday
  • Zoomba & tennis form and fee
2) Post A Response:
  • If you could go on a class trip anywhere in Canada, where would go and why? Explain in paragraph form including at least 3 supporting reason why you chose that particular destination.
  • Give another student feedback on their paragraph.
  • Edit and revise your post.
