Winter craft fair & Earth bites

11/28/2018

Picture
We played real volleyball today! We put all our skills together in some fantastic games. We will play a few more games before wrapping up this unit. It has been great to see the confidence grow! SERVE,  BUMP, SET, SMASH! In math, we  learned how to determine if the decimal of a standard fraction will terminate or repeat. We used three different strategies. It was so awesome to see the lights going off when we used the strategy of prime factorizing the denominator of a fraction in simplest form. That was my moment of the day! The afternoon was spent with earthbites making different flavoured popcorn, coconut milk hot chocolate and prepping for the craft fair. Today was good day:) #thelearningneverstops

Writng tip #10

11/27/2018

Picture
We have now had 10 writing tip lessons focusing on the success criteria for powerful personal writing. I was very happy to see how well everyone was able to incorporate these tips into their writing on yesterday's PAR. Your writing is improving every time you add these tips into your work. Keep it up! We also continued on with novel approach and had another  lesson on making our thinking visible. We focused on the strategies of: setting a purpose, making connections and using background knowledge, and visualizing. In the afternoon, we carried on with our inquiry. Students had to use many reading strategies in inquiry, especially monitoring comprehension as some of the research we are finding is difficult to understand.  The skills we are learning in both inquiry and novel approach are very important as they are used in all subject areas at school and in many activities outside of school as well.
1) SKATING:
  • We still need drivers for Skating (click here to sign up)
  • Skating will be at Kerrisdale Arena and we will leave school at 10:00am
2)MATH:
  • Complete p 47-49 posted yesterday
  • Review the learning intentions on fresh grade as we will be having a mid unit assessment this week
3)POST A RESPONSE:
  • Watch the two videos on screen time posted below
  • After watching them write a piece explaining the benefits of less screen time
  • Include several things that you can do to make screen time a more healthy activity
  • Today we had 30 minutes of Free play time outside. What did you do? Was it fun? How was it different than screen time?
  • How was what you did today different than screen time? Which is more healthy? Include these ideas in your piece
  • Paragraph plan:
Part 1: Introduction:
Topic Sentence: Screen time is serious concern in the world today. (Write about the benefits of less screen time from the video)

Part 2: Body #1
Things you can do to make screen time more healthy

Part 3: Body #2
What you did today in your free time at school outside and why it was fun/not fun or healthy/not healthy compared to screen time

Part 4: Conclusion
Your overall opinion on screen time summarized in a few sentences
  • Give another student some feed back on their writing

Ordeing & comparing fractions

11/26/2018

We started word work again today and this week we are working on basic classroom phrases in French. The French posters are well underway and will be up by Friday to help us in speaking French in class. We completed another round of science observations and kept collecting both qualitative and quantitate data to help us answer our big science inquiry question. Can you remember the big guiding question for our ecosystems inquiry? (Post it in the  PAR if you can) After science, we worked on applying the strategies we discovered for comparing fractions. It was great to see students using the strategies that they came up with. (Can you also find the two strategies missing form the picture? (post them on the PAR if you can)

In the afternoon, we did our 2nd ecosystem observation, finished up our comparing fractions inquiry and then worked on or Op Art projects. This is the last day of Ms. Chohan and Mr. Collins short practicum. We will see them next Thursday and then not again until January. I need my Alphabiography  if i'm going to flip that sentence

11/22/2018

Picture
Today we got to work on our French posters. Students finished their drafts, got some feedback and then carried on to start their good copies. Soon the posters will be up in the classroom and we will start using our new french phrases. From recess to lunch we worked on our Alphabiography writing projects. Ms. Chohan gave a writing tip on different ways  to make sentences. The lesson was called The Sentence Flip! After lunch, we stared an art project called Op Art Shading Blogs. We reviewed the process to create the composition and then looked at some examples to help us build the success criteria for the project. Then students got to work on their first drafts. It was amazing that  in just a short time drafts were vastly improved based on teacher and peer feedback. Outstanding job being persistent in sticking to the principles of learning.

math Inquiry: How can we compare Fractions?

11/21/2018

Picture
Click the picture to see a smashing video!
In our volleyball unit we practiced doing overhand smashes. Students really enjoyed hitting the ball hard. It felt good to hear the slap on the ball and see it rocketing away. We will soon be incorporating all  the skills we have been practicing into a game.  After more 1 or 1 writing conferences we had music and then did our first math inquiry. Students were posed the question: How can we compare fractions? They were challenged to find as many strategies as possible to order and compare fractions. It was great to see the collaboration and different thinking. In the afternoon, we had an extra PE period and then started our first French project. We will be learning some basic phrases that can be used in the classroom for simple  daily requests and conversations.

Natural Selection with Ms. Chohan

11/20/2018

Picture
Today was crazy awesome! We participated in  a fantastic natural selection simulation with Ms. Chohan and from recess to lunch we learned how to use a balance scale for weighing heavier objects and a very sensitive digital scale that can weigh objects as light as one one thousandth of a gram. Students worked hard to complete their first ecosystems observation. In the afternoon we got into INQUIRY. Today in our NOVEL APPROACH MEETS INQUIRY LESSON we practiced making our thinking visible. Teachers modeled using the reading strategies of: setting  a purpose, making connections and using background knowledge and monitoring comprehension and then students practiced. It was great to be ale to see all the great thinking. After telling Mr. Hong about the great day of learning he missed he was so pumped up he sent me about 35 text messages. We are so sorry you missed it Mr. Hong, but as you know........#thelearningneverstops!!!!!!

Mr. Hong (AKA master of the volleyball dance) set us on the path to success and now it Is time to: BUMP, SET, SPIKE! That's where we want to get to in volleyball!  In science, we learned the difference between qualitative and quantitative data and then planned out the data we will collect when observing the ecosystems. Students then started organizing their data collecting sheets to get ready for observations #1, which we will complete tomorrow! After music, we practiced comparing and ordering decimals. Tomorrow we will learn about natural selection from Ms. Chonan and Mr. Collins so do  the PAR very  carefully to help build your background knowledge!
