Math Unit Learning intentions

hoodies and Halloween

10/26/2018

Picture
Today we read quite a lot of Amal Unbound and discovered that being rich and powerful doesn't  necessarily make you happy. Societal expectations can change according to wealth, which can make life quite different. Students also worked hard completing most of the FSA. I know it was a long slog Div 1 and I commend you on your perseverance! In math, we had a great time using exponents with bases of 10 to explore and represent very large and very small numbers. Next week we will be having the unit evaluation for  Math so be sure to be reviewing the learning intentions posted on Fresh Grade! Have a great weekend in your warm hoodies!
1) Halloween Potluck Party
  • We will have a Halloween Potluck lunch party on Wednesday! Everyone MUST bring something to contribute to the party. THIS WILL BE A LUNCH PARTY, NOT A JUNK FOOD ONLY PARTY. We would like a nice mix of good lunch items as well as some sweet items and snacks or drinks.
  • Examples items: chicken wings, fried rice, spring rolls, sushi, spaghetti, veggies and dip, samosas, dumplings, Chinese food dishes, chicken nuggets, cookies, chips, cupcakes, Juice boxes etc.
  • YOU WILL NOT NEED TO BRING A LUNCH  ON HALLOWEEN WEDNESDAY!
  • Click here to sign up for what you will bring to the party! (CLICK)
***TALK TO YOUR PARENTS ABOUT WHAT WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO THE LUNCH PARTY THIS WEEKEND. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MUNITE**

2) Home Work and Reminders:
  • Review for Unit 7 word work test Monday
  • Home reading
  • Math Unit Evaluation Next Week (Thursday)
3) Post A Response:
  • NO PAR this WEEKEND!
  • Post here if you have any questions about the Potluck Party or any other item related to school.
  • ENJOY your PARless weekend!

Personal vs. Informational writing

10/25/2018

Picture
Today we made some steady progress on our Alphabiography writing project. Mrs. Chohan and I did a mini lesson on the differences between personal and informational writing. We looked at several student samples and, with the help of the class,  classified them according to the characteristic of each type of writing. Remember that we are practicing personal writing in this project. If you have already written some information pieces please do not erase them. You can either work on changing them into personal pieces or just leave them for now and make sure your next piece is a personal one. After recess we had the global read aloud and a VERY exciting math lesson! I was so excited about math I could hardly contain my enthusiasm! Some of us were a little stumped when I said 3 x 4=6 and I can see why. I was so excited I forgot my math facts for a second:) Let's not forget those fact families, as they are so important. A fact family can be made with any multiplication or division sentence. In the afternoon we finished the second to last section of the FSA. Hang in there Division 1. We are almost done.
1) Homework and Reminders:
  • Bring your AGENDA tomorrow. We are going to practice using it! I will teach you an agenda strategy!
  • Math fact family question : 73.6 x 100 =
  • Lets try to get the collages finished up by tomorrow. If more time is really needed please see me tomorrow
  • Word Work Test Unit 7 tomorrow.
2) Post A Response:
  • In an informational (not personal) paragraph explain what a fact family is and the explain how to make a fact family from a multiplication sentence. Use an example to help you. In your paragraph you must include the following math language (factor, product, quotient, dividend, devisor)
  • Give another student feedback on their paragraph
  • Edit/revise your post if needed

NOVA Documentary
Today we were very busy. From collecting mulch in the school garden to learning about the origins of early humans. In the morning, we a great game of sprout ball in PE and then practiced a writing technique to catch reader attention, which uses the strategy of starting  a piece of writing at an exciting point and then back filling in the less exciting information. After practicing this, we had EarthBites and learned about how leaf mold and mulch can be used to improve a garden. Then we got our hands dirty and collected and ground up leaves to be used as mulch. In the afternoon, we kicked off out next inquiry on the anthropological origins of humans by watching the  NOVA documentary, Becoming Human.

  • Give feed back to the reply if improvement is needed.
  • Edit/revise base on any feedback you receive

We got into  a very exciting part of the Global Read Aloud and found out that Amal has become a servant to a powerful oppressive landlord. What will happen next?  After more practice finding GCF/LCM in math, we had our big 50 word review test to see if we are retaining the vocabulary we have been building up over the last 5 weeks. We finished off the week working on our personal collages in art. Several students are finishing up and the collages are looking great. Have a fantastic long weekend!!
