Badminton ends!

Today was a great day at school. We started off the day with our final badminton play day. Mr. Fisher battled the students and had some really good matches. Students finish their self-assessments. Please see fresh grade for badminton evaluation's. Students also had a lesson on how to prepare for their speeches coming up next week. We worked together as a class on ways to make our speeches interesting and how catch peoples attention. I look forward to some people practising their speeches in front of the class this week.

Today we welcomed  a new student to Laurier. We always love new additions to our learning team. In the morning we had music and after music we worked on organizing our novel study groups. In the afternoon we were introduced to our next science unit on chemistry. We finished off the day working on digital art composition techniques. 
1.) NOVEL APPROACH:
  • See the meeting schedule below and be ready and accountable to your group on your meeting day
  • Keep reading and working on the booklet each day so you do not get behind.
2.) SCIENCE:
  • Complete the periodic table handout
3.) ART: Digital Photography

After badminton students worked on their digital photography skills and learned about forced perspective. Students had a chance to practice this technique and it was great to see all the creativity! After a hand on algebra lesson involving linear relations students were introduced to the various novels they will be reading and studying over the next two weeks. Mr. Hong and I are looking forward to students showing the ownership they have been developing over the past eight months.

Speeches will start next week! Start practicing:)
​Students are hard at work preparing for the Gr. 7 Speech Fest this Friday.  Continue to work through learning the content of your speeches, eliminating supporting points to stay within the 3-5 minute time limit, and making it more engaging.  Parents, if you have time, please have your child practice their speech in front of you and provide them with some feedback based on the criteria/rubric. They also have a speech guidebook they were given that has tips on how to make an engaging speech.

Today's students spent a significant amount of time working on preparing their portfolios for their student led home conference this weekend. Students worked on selecting highlights of their learning and completing learning reflections to show growth. Students will be sharing highlights of their learning with their parents over the weekend.

3.) CAREER EDUCATION: Continue preparing for the student led conference by completing your learning reflections. Some time will be provided in the class tomorrow but it is never a bad idea to get ahead.

  • We have seen a big shift in the learning in our class. Students are taking greater ownership of their learning. It is clear you have all learned how to become excellent learners this year!
  • When completing your PAR today, really think about the Big 6 Learning principles (learning intentions, success criteria, questions, self-assessments, peer assessments, and ownership)
  • LEARNING INTENTION: I can explain what it means to take ownership of my learning.
  • SUCCESS CRITERIA:
    1.) PARAGRAPH FORMAT: intro/body/conclusion
    2.) GIVENS/CONVENTIONS: spelling, capitals, sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation.
    3.) BODY: Include 2 examples/points/evidence that show how you take ownership of your learning.
    4.) SELF-ASSESSMENT: Complete a self-assessment using the above criteria and post a reply to your paragraph stating you did this and what you changed (if any).
    5.) PEER-ASSESSMENT: Give one other student peer feedback and give them two things to improve on.
