Group work is fun but its also hard work!
Today we finally finished up the last of the fitness testing. We will be using this data to help learn the goal setting process. We will also be learning about and applying the FITT (Frequency, Intensity, Type and Time) formula and SAID (Specific, Adaptation, to Imposed Demands) principle to help us set a good fitness goal. We also got our groups for the Plant Identification Project and stared planning out what the project will look like and what each members responsibilities will be. We finished off the day doing a writing sample and working on our personal collages.

Fitness testing: MOnitoring heart rate and Vo2Max

9/26/2018

Picture
Today we almost finished our first round of fitness testing. We did the 1 mile run and then worked on calculating our Vo2 MAX. The Vo2 MAX is the measurement of the maximum amount of oxygen a person can utilize during intense exercise. In Math we reviewed some mathematical terminology and practiced explaining why you only need to look at the ones place value when determining divisibility by 2, 5 and 10. We also learned and practiced how to determine the remainders if numbers are  divided by 2,5 or 10. In the afternoon we chose our mini inquiry questions and learned some strategies for organizing our research notebooks. Next week, we will get our knowledge building groups and will start inquiring!
1) REMINDERS:
  • Outstanding forms and school fees: Kheyria, Taya, Owen
2) HOMEWORK:
  • Board Work (CLICK)
  • Interactions  p. 32. (CLICK)
  • Hand in top 3 inquiry questions
  • Fitness testing sheets handed in and compete by Friday
  • Home Reading as usual 30 min
3) POST A RESPONSE
  • Part 1: TRY AGAIN: Why do you only need to look at the ones place value when determining if  a number is divisible by 2,5,10?  (Use this sentence frame to help you:  ALL GROUPS OF ___________ARE DIVISIBLE  BY _______,_______,AND ______ THEREFORE, YOU ONLY NEED TO LOOK AT THE ______________________!
  • Part 2: Post 3 numbers: one in the tens, one in the hundreds and one in the thousands place values. EXAMPLE: ( 45, 237, 2750)
  • Part 3: Reply to another post and explain what the remainder would be in the number was divided by 2, 5, and 10.
  • BONUS: Can you explain why you know that your answers are correct?

Social Studies Inquiry!

9/25/2018

Picture
Today we held our annual Terry fox run to help raise awareness and money for cancer research. Can you believe the Terry Fox Foundation has raised over 750 million dollars for cancer research? After the run we continued our class read-a-loud and in Math we learned an algorithm discovered by a Greek scientist named Eratosthenes that can be used to find prime numbers. After Lunch, we started learning about the INQUIRY PROCESS. (click) We reviewed the different parts to an inquiry.  We will be working on learning how the inquiry process works over the next few weeks,  before diving into our Social Studies inquiry questions.
NOTICES:
  • Envelopes/money must be returned by tomorrow.
  • YWCA forms
  • Immunizations are tomorrow.
Homework:

1.) READING: Read for 30 minutes and log it in your planner/calendar.

2.) MATH: See PAR

3.) SOCIAL STUDIES/INQUIRY:
  • Come up with 5 SELF and 5 WORLD questions (due tomorrow).   These should be questions you are genuinely interested in learning about.
4) POST A RESPONSE:
  • THERE ARE TWO PARTS TO THIS PAR!
  • Part 1: In paragraph form, explain how the sieve of Eratosthenes  works? Why are only the prime numbers left when you are finished?
  • Part 2: Explain why you only need to look at the ones place value to determine if a number is divisible by 2, 5 and 10. Why can you just ignore all other place values except the ones? Try using some  examples to help you in your explanation.
  • Give someone feedback to help them improve their post
