Properties of matter

2/28/2020

Today students worked hard to complete their practice maps of Africa. The will use the skills they have learned and practiced on this map to make a scale map of North America where they will track the main route of the underground railroad. Students in Div. 1 also had a Math evaluation on percent. The evaluations will be uploaded to FG next week.

2/21/2020

Picture
Today, students continued to learn about the particle theory of matter. They completed an experiment using salt and water of varying temperatures.  Students will complete their observations, diagrams, conclusion, and explanations over the weekend. We will work on our formal lab write-ups on Tuesday.   Click here to practice the particle theory of matter simulation.  Be sure to play around with the different states of matter at varying temperatures. What do you notice? What happens to the particles What happens to the space between them? What happens to the speed of the particles bumping into each other?
IMPORTANT:
  • Arrive at school between 7:35 - 7:50.  You will depart for Seymour Mountain as soon as your driver and all students have arrived.
  • Make sure you remember all your ski/snowboarding clothing and equipment.

1.) MATH: Estimate the answers for the word problems handout. (click)

2.) SOCIAL STUDIES: If you didn't complete yesterday's 'BLACK HISTORY' PAR, you must complete this before doing todays.

3.) SCIENCE: Complete Science lab handouts.

4.) POST A RESPONSE:
  • Today, you conducted an experimental inquiry into the particle theory of matter.
  • Click here to try the simulation online (Click on the 'STATES' simulation once you enter).
  • Make sure you play around with the simulation so you get a good sense of what happens when you cool or when you heat solids, liquids, and gases.
  • Watch this video if you need to build more of you BK.
  • Click here to read the handout on the particle theory of matter if you need to further build your BK.
  • In your own words, explain the differences between solids, liquids, and gases using the particle theory of matter.
         SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Paragraph format (intro, supporting sentences, conclusion)
2.) Includes information from the above 3 points.
3.) Must explain the shape, volume, speed and space of particles of solids, liquids, and gases.
4.) Ask one student a question about their post and try to push their thinking forward!
5.) Answer any question posted by a student on anyone's post.  Answer all unanswered questions

I WANT to be KIND!
Digital Citizenship is a topic students need to build background knowledge in.  You do not have background knowledge in this area and it is something that cannot be assumed.  Today, we saw the 'TO THIS DAY' video by Shane Koyczan.  Parents, please take time to check this video out with your child and discuss some of the issues that pop up. We discussed the negative aspects of bullying, social media, and gossiping.  Hopefully today's lesson makes you think a bit more about these issues.
IMPORTANT:
  • Students will be participating in 2 ADST workshops at the Oakridge Mac store on Tues Apr 7 10-11:30 (Obstacle Challenge Coding) and one on Tues Apr 21 10-11:30 (Augmented Reality Coding). We will walk over to the mall as a class.
1.) MA: Complete the shopping worksheet

2.)SC: Mixtures and Solutions Worksheet

  • Watch the Kindness Boomerang to get your brains 'PRIMED' or 'WARMED-UP' for today's PAR.
  • In paragraph format, write about the BIG IDEA of the video.
          SUCCESS CRITERIA:
1.) Pay attention to the givens
2.) Paragraph format (intro, supporting sentences, conclusion)
3.) Includes at least 2 examples/supporting sentences with specific evidence from the video.

Discounts & Similes

2/11/2020

Picture
Today we started preparing for our upcoming Science Evaluation on Natural Selection and Evolution by drawing comparisons using similes. We related the concepts from science to other things in the world. It was a bit challenging at first but after students got the hang of it they were amazing. In the afternoon, students practiced rounding and estimating discounts and taxes and then calculating discounts and taxes using a calculator. This math unit is a very important unit that will help you greatly in your life out of school so get these concepts down.
1) SCIENCE:Complete the simile it handout

2)MATH: Complete the discount/tax handout

3) POST A RESPONSE:
  • Explain each simile form SCIENCE to one of your parents or someone in your home.
  • When you are finished post here who you shared your comparisons with.
  • Finally, post your best two simile comparisons here for us all to read.
