THAT'S A WRAP (MINI-INQUIRY)

10/30/2019

Picture
Students wrapped up a successful mini inquiry today. They completed their self-assessments and reviewed their work.  This is an integral part of the learning process. Students reviewed learning intentions and articulated their 'learning' after carefully reflecting on it.  Parents, what research tells us is that if students can understand how they came to understand what they learned, it is more meaningful to them and they tend to take more ownership of it. Don't forget to bring your snacks to school tomorrow!

We also learned the technique of stating at and exciting part and backfilling to catch the readers interest when writing! I guarantee that, if you start using the writing tips I teach you in class, your writing will improve!  We continued our 'GLOBAL READ ALOUD' and learned more about life in a third-world country.  Most of us cannot imagine what life would be like swimming through heaps of garbage.  Click here to watch a video of the massive amounts of garbage in Chennai's canals.

Synthesize: Putting things together in your head to create something new

It always amazes me what kids can do if you show them how and let them try! Today we reviewed analyzing synthesizing. Teachers and students modeled and practiced together using an article on social media. We accessed our background knowledge and then read an article and made notes. Then together, we combined the two to create learning statements Afterwards, students got work ANALYZING their notes (looking through to find the most importnat facts) and then they combined these fact with their BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE to come up with LEARNING statements! BAM! Synthesis in action!  iIt was  was so awesome to see this taking place! We are so proud of all Division 1 and 2 students.

Canada Votes

Picture
Click the pic to learn more about party platforms
Tonight, millions of Canadians across the country will to the polls to vote for the political party they most support.  They will use their critical eyes to sift through the information that each party has put out in order to see which party has the same beliefs as them.  As students, you do this on a daily basis.  You think critically and carefully to select which information you believe to be relevant and trustworthy. This is part of the analyzing and evaluating process.  Mr. Hong and I look forward to reading your PAR'S.
