Residential School

3/13/2018

Picture
In the morning we read a book called, I Am  Not A Number. It shared the story of a First Nations girl in Canada who was taken from her family and sent to a residential school. It was shocking to hear about how cruel people can be. Although it is hard to hear these stories it is important to learn about the past so that as move forward we can learn form the mistakes that have been made. After lunch, we introduced the criteria for a powerful response and showed the students an example of the process and a final written piece. Students then had some time to get started on their response to the book they have been working on. In the afternoon, we had our science evaluation and reviewed order of operations in math.
1) Reminders & Homework
  • Sign up for the potluck (see yesterday post)
  • Math party Thursday
  • Finish the rough draft/plan of your powerful response by using the template to organize your thinking for each section.
2) Post A Response:
  • Post several things that you learned from listening to the book, I Am Not A Number.
  • What was the most shocking?
  • Post your thoughts on the idea of reconciliation (apologizing / trying to restore) with First Nations People
  • Why is it important?
  • Who is it important to? Why?

Students finished their discussions around the thinking and learning questions and then worked on filling out the Big Idea graphic organizer where they have to synthesize and evaluate their understanding of the book. Students will use this organizer to help them develop a powerful response to the book.   In the afternoon, we had music and worked on finding evidence for the competencies we have been workington in our science inquiry.
1) Reminders:

Langara Running Trail
Today, we started the day off with Fitness Friday and we followed it up with a run/walk around the Langara golf course. The photo to the left shows our exact route.  Our route was 2.8km in length and it took us approximately 29 minutes and 45 seconds to complete.  Or average pace was 10:31 seconds per kilometre.  Our average speed was 5.7 km an hour and our maximum speed was 11.5 km an hour. It was nice to see the weather improve today.  We haven't seen sun like this in a very long time. With the weather improving, we are looking forward to spending more time outdoors to work on our physical health.

Bookclub groups recording visible thinking!
Today we stared our book clubs where we teamed up with Division 2 to read a short story together and record our thinking to make it visible. Thus the term VISIBLE THINKING! Students used all the  reading strategies they have been working on to share their thinking. After the lesson Mr. Hong and I were very impressed with the conversations that were taking place throughout the classrooms. Outstanding work Grade 7's! Tomorrow we will finish the modeling lesson with the book "When I was Eight," and we  will introduce the first activity that goes along with the book club, Gift Of Words!
1) Reminders:
  • Sign up for a conference (click here)
  • Last chance to bring in February home reading calendars!
