In math we stared ratios and leaned what a direct proportion is.  In the afternoon we had a make up PE period and practice shooting and fast breaks with a game of bump and a game of 3 on 2 on 1. We finished up the day working on reading strategies with Mr. Hong.

Building Proportions to Solve Percent Problems

1/24/2018

Picture
52 x 100 divided by 60 will give the missing value. Can you find it?
Today students worked on a strategy for solving percent problems by building  proportions. We learned that to find the missing value in a proportion we can cross multiply opposites (opposite numerators and denominators) and then divide by the final  value. This method will give  the missing value. After lunch and story we reviewed the criteria for a good sewing project and then got to work sewing. Students are very into this project. When they are sewing the classroom is very quiet as everyone has to focus carefully to make nice, even, neat stitches. Also, they do not like poking themselves with the needles!
1) Reminders, Due Dates & Homework:
  • Camp forms
  • Early Humans Inquiry: Going Public presentation is due on Thursday, February 1st
  • Math :Percent Word Problems Sheet (click here)
2) Post A Response:
  • Write a short paragraph explaining why learning to estimate and calculate percent is an important life skill. Include a topic sentence and at least 3 examples that support your thinking. Also, don't forget to add a nice ending/summarizing sentence to wrap up your paragraph!
  • Read your paragraph out loud before you post it. Make sure your spelling, grammar and sentences are correct!
  • Give another student some feed back on their writing!
  • Edit and revise your original post if needed!

Picture
Today we started the coalesce phase of our inquiry. We stared analyzing our notes and picking out the most important information we have found relate to our question.  After analyzing our notes and choosing the most important facts we need to  think about what we have learned  and synthesize it into statements of new understandings. Please watch the following video again to refresh your memory on what synthesis is.
1) Reminders:
  • Camp forms
  • Start looking for a landscape picture you like for our painting unit which we will be starting soon. It must be a photograph, either taken and developed, printed in a print shop or taken from a magazine or calendar. It cannot be printed form the internet on a home printer
2) Homework:
  • Math: Shopping and percent (live link)
3) Post A Response:
  • Spend 15 min working on your alphabiograhy
  • Post how you will publish and bind your finished Alphabiograohy book

After our pretest we played our first game of basketball as a class. Student skills are improving and we now know the positions and the general movement pattern of each position. I look forward to seeing some good games as the unit progresses. We continued on in Forbidden City and used our mental math skills as well as a some calculator skills to estimate and calculate discounts, taxes and tips. In the afternoon we had music and wrote artist statements for out digital story collages. Come and see Divisions 1's amazing digital art displayed on the class bulletin board in the hall.
1) Reminders:

It is going to have a positive impact on their life and this means that other people could also benefit. If one feels good, there is the chance that they will want to pass the feeling on to others."   (Article by Oliver Cooper)
  • Lets try! Post at least  5 acknowledgements to people your life. Make at least 2 of them students in division 1. Let's try and get everyone in our whole class! How awesome would that be!
