WELCOME TO MR FISHER'S CLASS

Circles, mixtures and Focus

5/29/2019

Division 1 had a busy day today.  Students started off with a period to work on their powerful responses for their novels.  From there we moved to the gym where we continued to work on our field hockey skills.  After recess there was music before we rolled into a Math lesson on Area of a Circle.  The afternoon began with sorting mixtures.  We then had an interesting presentation on Focus, by a group of Grade 9 students from Churchill.  We finished the day with some time to finalize our Transformation Art.  What a great day of learning.
1) POST GRATITUDE:
  • In the gratitude journal post your daily gratitude.
2) HOMEWORK:

Novel Approach:
  • powerful response due on Friday May 31
  • 1 powerful response, 2 thinking and learning, 3 gift of words
  • Choose wisely
Social Studies:
  • Project Due end of day Monday June 3
  • Keep working with your group members
Math:
  • Area of a circle worksheet
  • See class work from math lesson below

3) POST A RESPONSE:
  • Today we had 4 Grade 9 students from the Churchill Synergy program come share their learning and experience on Focus with us today.
  • Based on the information that was shared with us today, answer the following questions is a brief paragraph format:
    • What bad habit that they spoke of are you most guilty of?
    • How are you going to work on changing that bad habit?
    • What were your two biggest take aways from the presentation and why? Re: worded - What are two ideas that were most interesting, or new two you, and what made them intersting, or if new important to you.  Hope that helps.

I admit that sometimes I do tend to study the night before the test, depending on wheather it is a big test or a little test.
I will use my time wisely b studying before hand and the night before the test.
(Sorry, I don't understand the last question)

I think you get the most guild by studying before a test like Kheyria said. And I will change it by studying every day a little bit. Not to study before a test (sorry I forgot they other one.)

Just saying I’m getting the app. Uh oh my tree just died while doing this PAR. I think all of us are a victim to having devices nearby us distracting us from properly doing our work. Cough cough Jospeh cough cough.
And yes one of the ways my productivity can improve is not checking my phone for those very important Instagram notifications too much. And yes, my tree sadly died.

I learned that the grade 9 who came to our school to present said that a bad habit to have is to play on a devise for your 5minute break time and that your time goes so fast hat you have to go back to work. The way I am going to change my bad habit is to walk around for 5minute and come back and go back and FOCUS back on my work. Two take away that I got from the presentation is that I should use Blue and Red highlighter, marker, pen etc . Also, I learned from today’s presentation is that we should know if we need our phone for our work or should we not need it for the work.

The grade nines showed all of our guilty habit...studying and cramping everything before the test or due date. This is really a habit thats hard to undo if you dont lile school in general because you would just have no determination to do work, but we have to change. Examples to help you do better in school: make connections than only memorizing, highlight your notes to help you study, and so on. (@Ms.Chohan kind of dont get the last question)

I’ guilty of listening to music when I study.I will work to change the habit by putting my phone away when I study. I was surprised to hear that listening to music when you study can be bad. I learnt that red and blue can help you remember.

I find myself guilty of studying in bed with my iPad beside me and headphones on to listen to music. To change this habit I will leave my iPad and headphones in my room and study in the kitchen or living room. I don't understand the last question. Sorry.

Today, we had four Grade 9s from Churchill come over to give a presentation about focusing, and about some tips to prepare for evaluations. They spoke about some bad habits about tests - and one of them described me perfectly. Cramming before the test. However, in my defence, I always prepare before the test - cramming is just a luxury for me. But I will admit, I usually cram for a few hours the night before the test and for around half an hour the morning of it. This has proven very useful to me to refresh my memory. Though it IS a bad habit, I'm not considering changing this habit anytime soon - I always have a good night's sleep the night before the test and I consider it a luxury, not a must-do.

The two things I took away from the presentation is (1) to COLOUR my notes. I'm not exactly the most careful note-taker, but not the most careless either. I agree with what they said to colour code the notes, and hopefully I can start doing this sometime soon. (2) Making connections, instead of memorization. I use this strategy a lot when I am studying, but you can always do more of it. For me, this is extremely effective for the exact reasons the presenters stated.

All in all, the presentation today was very interesting and I took away some information and something to start to do, which is to color code my notes.

@ People confused about last question

Take this with a grain of salt (not completely sure about this) but from my perspective the last question is asking the two biggest things you learnt from the presentation and why they were important.

I listen to music all the time while doing work and am listening to music while I am doing this PAR, I sent know if this really is a bad habit because I am getting all wok done on time and am getting good marks but it might be a bad habit in the future. It won't be hard to stop because I could literally just stop whenever I want.

Dont understand the last question.

I feel really guilty of doing everything before its due (for example, my Powerful Response because my groupmates weren´t there or they were a bit behind) and I do. get distracted alot so I dont get anything done... I think I will stay off of my devices as long as i can (unless I need them to finish my homework). I think the most intresting parts were when you study, u connect it to other things rather than memorizing. Another was to use colour which I find interesting because I dont use colour unless I need to remember something really important.

I usually cram most of the things I need to memorize the night before the test. I like to review what I memorized in the morning for a while before going to school. I would just like to say that this habit doesn't affect my sleeping to much. I don't stay for like three hours after my sleep time just to study for an upcoming test. Even so, I felt a little guilty about this bad habit. I would try to study for tests before the day right before the test so I don't have to cram all the information into my poor head in 1 hour. I was surprised about the connecting notes one. I didn't completely understand this one but it was pretty interesting. I found the highlighting one very important to learn. I understand how highlighting some text important for especially writing and studying. I really enjoyed this presentation and I hope to use this presentation to help me in my future.

I get very distracted because of my devices. My computer, phone, Ipad, all these electronics are so addictive and it is always impossible without spending at least twenty minutes surfing the internet. I always end up getting off task because of the electronics which can lead me into tight schedules. I will change this by making a to do list, and making sure that until all of my things are check marked, I won't even look at a devise, unless it is for research or doing my par. I would prioritize and make sure my school work gets done first. I found that the highlighting the words were very helpful, and even though I already knew it, I am grateful for a reminder. Why? I usually forget what I need to study, so highlighting helps me a lot. Another thing I learned that was very helpful was to always get a goods night sleep. I found it interesting to learn that if you don't have a goods night sleep, then you will forget everything that you crammed. So everything that you learned will be completely useless. The PowerPoint was very helpful, and I learned many tips to be able to study more efficiently without wasting unnecessary time.

I could relate to getting distracted easily when working. I tend to get distracted as I’m working and then what distracted me would prevent me from studying for awhile. I know that in order to be able to study properly, I’ll have to go somewhere where nothing will distract me. I liked the technique about working for twenty five minutes, and then taking a five minute break. When I’m studying, my work times get very messy. So I’ll keep that in mind. I also liked the suggestion of how you could colour your notes in red and blue. They both give a helpful affect when taking notes. After learning many new things by this presentation, I’ll definitely start to try using these tips and techniques.

One thing I am guilty of is that I don't use color to emphasize my notes. Although I was very good at this a few years ago, I started to do something else. I now usually take notes with my memory, giving important pieces of information by memorizing its location; however, by the time I reach high school as pieces of information are going to get long, I wish to change this. I can probably change this by bringing highlighters to school and using them during inquiries and note taking.

Two piece of information shared today that surprised me were that blue pens were used to emphasize creativity. I never knew this, as I never seen anyone use a blue pen before (light blue, not dark blue). Another was that using too much color can ruin your notes. I have always seen many people use three to seven different colors, using them everywhere, yet they still know where everything is. Thereby I am confused about this.

A problem that sometimes I study the night before a test and don't get a good night's sleep. I'll study everyday when a test is announced to avoid cramming. Somethings that I found interesting is that color of the highlighter can change a lot as scientists have just figured out. You should also not use a lot of highlighters as it can make studying harder and won't help.

Today, four grade 9 students from Churchill Synergy program came and shared their learning and experience on Focus with us.
One thing that I am guilty of is not getting a good night sleep. Even though, I don't cram everything on the last day, the night before an evaluation is always the most stressful for me. What if I didn't study enough? What if I forget everything? With all my worries, I usually end up sleeping pretty late. To help me change my habit is to manage my time better. I will plan study blocks before an exam. I will even out the time everyday, and set alarms to remind myself. Two things I learned from the presentation is that colour coordinating your notes, it can help you memorize information faster and more efficiently. (but if you highlight too much, you might as well not highlight at all) I also learned that your environment should be clean, and somewhere you would want to work. For example, we usually associated bed with sleep, so often times when we work on the bed, its easy to fall asleep. I found the presentation helpful and I will definitely start applying these tips into my daily routine.

something i am guilty for doing is studying late at night right before a test. to fix this bad habit i will review over lessons once in a while. something that i found intresting was that blue and red colours makes you remember things easier. another thing that i found interesting was to make connections instead of memorization because if you make connections its likely going to be remembered for longer instead of forgetting it in a week.

I learned that it’s bad if you study the night before the test, or just cramming everything in a day. Something I feel guilty about is studying in bed. To change this I will have to leave my bed whenever I need to study
