The big idea of a story is what the author of the book is trying to tell you. There are many ways of finding it.

One way is that I read a book, then determine the conflict and think of the solution. For example, during the lemonade war, two siblings didn't get along (ever since they got a letter), but then they reconciled because of their friendship and how much fun they used to have together. So one of the things I think the big idea is about friendship.

Another way I find the big idea is by making inferences that leads to the big idea. Fore example, Evan thought about many things Jessie and him used to do together which I think was why he and Jessie reconciled.

Those are two ways that help me find the big idea to stories---maybe you can try too!

Big ideas are what the author is trying to tell the readers. Kind of like the moral of a story. There are many strategies to figure that out.

One common way is by making inferences. That means that you make guesses based on what the book gives you and your background knowledge. For example, in the Lemonade war, Evan made flashbacks to when Jessie would help Evan, and Evan would help her. They used to go along so well until the fight they had. So I made an inference that Evan reconciled with Jessie because he didn't want to fight her and he wanted to be friends again.

Another way I find the big idea is by making connections. For example, when Evan reconciled with Jessie, that made me connect to when my sister and I got into a fight, we reconciled and became friends again, which became my inference.

After reading this, you can use my strategies for you to find the big idea.

Finding the big idea requires one to monitor comprehension and inferencing to mash out something legible. After using those, you should have a handful of big ideas and all you have to do is choose one and mash it out. Afterwards, you are finished.

What is a big idea of a story? it is basically the moral of a story and what the author thinks about it.

How do I find the big idea of the story? Well, I usually think of what the characters in the story do, and then turn it into a big idea. For example, in Refugee, the characters in the story have to sacrifice something in order to gain what they really want.

That is how I find my big ideas and hopefully you have your own way of finding a big idea too!

How do I find the big idea of the story? Well, I usually think of what the characters in the story do, and then turn it into a big idea. This involves making inferences, because a good writer won't give the exact thing you need every time. For example, in Refugee, the characters in the story have to sacrifice something in order to gain what they really want, but they don't just say that so and so sacrificed this to get this always. Also, finding a big idea involves making connections to the book if there are places you can connect to. For example, in The Lemonade War, I can relate to the siblings fighting in the book because I have a sibling that I fight with sometimes.

That is how I find my big ideas and hopefully you have your own way of finding a big idea too!

Big ideas. Big ideas of stories. Big ideas I’m supposed to get out of stories. They are all very confusing sometimes, no? Thus, here is a step by step guide on how I do it.
Firstly, I think do any reoccurring themes between characters. Sometimes in more advanced books, it’s harder to get the theme isn’t only happen once or twice. But regardless, when I try to find a big idea I must find out what themes are reoccurring or brought attention to.
Secondly, I think about how these themes could possibly connect to one big theme. For example, famine and violence and racism could be discrimination.
Lastly, I think about the big topic I got from step 2. I like to possibly think about how I could expand and grow the idea more and more yet still have it make sense.
Finally, this is how I get my big ideas for my powerful response. If you ever need some help finding one, just use this guide!

Do you know what a big idea is? More specifically, the big idea of a story. The big idea of a story is a moral of a story. It explains the story and what the author was thinking about when they were writing the book. Now I will give you two tips on finding the big idea.

First, I like to use inferencing. Inferencing is when you use information from the book to infer what is going to happen next. This gives you many ideas on what the author was thinking. An example would be, in forbidden city, the main character (author) was probably very confused when he was shot in the leg with a gun. After that, some students took him to their house to help heal him but in the book, it doesn’t say that he will be taken to a random student’s house and he will be saved.

Second, you also need to make connections using your background knowledge, this will help you understand what the characters are thinking more because you might have experienced something similar. This way you will know exactly what that character was thinking at that time.

So those are the two main ways I like to use to find the big idea.

Usually, when we read books, we are drawn to the funny, tragic, and interesting parts of the story. But beneath the beautiful sentences, BIG IDEAS lay buried in the pages like treasure. BIG IDEAS are the main themes, or main principles or values that are often expressed throughout the text, which could be short like a picture book or a poem, and long like a 300 page novel. Today I will explain how to formulate a BIG IDEAS. Let’s get started!

First of all, I will use the reading strategy DETERMINING WHAT’S IMPORTANT to find the most important parts of the story, including the main events, the problems, solutions, and results, which lead to the BIG IDEAS. For example, in the Star Wars franchise, the Jedi fight against the Sith to bring balance to the Force, providing peace and security, so the BIG IDEA is that people should fight for peace. Next, I would use the reading strategy MAKING INFERENCES to create a conclusion from the evidence. This conclusion would become my BIG IDEA. For example, in Follow the Elephant, at the end of the trip, Ben and Gran learned about the Hindu culture and accepted it, so I inferred that Ben and Gran were being open-minded and they were willing to accept new things. Lastly, I would need to MONITOR MY COMPREHENSION so that I can properly explain my BIG IDEAS. For example, in the story Follow the Elephant, there was the quote, “a traveller goes to India seeking adventure. What he finds is himself.” I didn’t understand it, so I read the rest of the book, and in the end, I was able to correctly understand the quote. Therefore, three of the most important reading strategies are DETERMINING WHAT’S IMPORTANT, MAKING INFERENCES, and MONITORING MY COMPREHENSION.

Haha. Do you know why I said, “three of the most important reading strategies?” That’s because all of them are important! They are all needed to formulate good BIG IDEAS and understand the story deeply. In conclusion, the reading strategies DETERMINING WHAT’S IMPORTANT, MAKING INFERENCES, and MONITORING MY COMPREHENSION are the most common ones that I use to formulate my BIG IDEAS.

The big idea of the story is why you read a book. It’s the purpose and moral of the story. For me, to find the big I always have to monitor my comprehension, to make sure I’m understanding what the author is telling me. Especially in chapter books when the big idea isn’t given to you straight forward, you have to really pay attention to what you’re reading. Reading between the lines is also a way to help you comprehend what the author is hinting.

Another strategy I use is inferencing. You don’t always know exactly what the author is telling you, especially in the beginning of the book. You have to try to figure out what the main point was. What got brought up repeatedly? What words are bold and standing out? In addition, using your BK is great too because u can make connections to the story and other experiences of thing you’ve read. In conclusion, this is how I find the big idea of a novel.

Throughout this year, we've been working on using the reading strategies we learned in Novel Approach to find the big idea of a book or story. Although there are multiple different methods to finding a big idea, there are a few strategies I use to help my comprehension. To start, one thing that I find helpful for me is to mark the sections of the book that I think are related to the big idea. This can correlate with some of the reading strategies we learned in class, such as making inferences or connections. As an example, if a character in the book said something that I think may lead me to the big idea, I would mark it with a sticky note. In addition, I think the reading strategy I use the most would be making inferences. To elaborate, I often find myself inferring while reading a book without even realizing it, such as using context to infer what a character may be thinking or what the meaning is behind significant phrases that are being said. To add everything up, when I finish reading the book, I look back to where I marked the notes that I thought were important and evaluate them. Ultimately, there are two ways that could lead me to finding a big idea; taking note of what I think is remarkable throughout the book and using helpful reading strategies to improve my understanding.

While reading a book, your purpose might be to learn, enjoy yourself, or connect with others, when we were reading this book, we were focusing on finding the big idea. A big idea is the topic, lesson, or moral, of the book. To find a big idea, you must read the whole book to get a feel, answer your questions, and learn from others. You must also deeply think about what the book is trying to show or teach you. If you find the big idea, the book might have a bigger impact on you and your understanding.

Throughout the year, our main purpose of reading these books were to find the big idea using different methods and practicing using different methods. A big idea is the main topic, the most important part, and just the main part of the book. You need to read the whole book so you understand it and then you can come up with the big idea, and you can also set a purpose and many other strategies. Once you find the big idea, you will understand more and it will help you learn more.

In a book, there will always be a big idea or a message that informs people something. So how do we find the big idea? A way I do it is to use the "reading strategies". The reading strategies are a set of strategies that helps you understand the book better. After that, I like to synthesis and evaluate the important parts to find the Big Idea.

The big idea of a story is something the author wants to tell you through the book. Sure you could just read it like normal, but it’s pretty interesting to see what the author’s trying to express from the book. So, how do you find the big idea?
For me, I determined what’s important in the book, and try to find what’s common in them. For example, in refugee, all of these important moments are connected to family, so maybe the big idea of the big is how family is important and we shouldn’t take it for granted.
If there’s more than one theme in those important moments, I try to find multiple big ideas then see how well does it relate to the book. Another example, also in refugee, is those important moments have a lot to do with the tragic parts of war, like death, lost of your home, living in constant fear, etc. So, maybe the big idea of the book is how war isn’t a joke and we should take it more seriously.
Once you find the big idea of a book, I’m sure it’ll help you further understand the book and help you notice parts the lead up to the big idea.

How do you find the big idea of a story? Everyone has their own different ways of doing this, and today I'll tell you about mine.

To find the big idea of a story, I usually use the novel approach reading strategies. My group members also have given me many good ideas that I have used or that have pushed my thinking even further. When I visualize something from the story, it helps me understand how the characters might feel in that environment. For example, in Refugee, I was able to visualize the "processing center" in Hungary that Mahmoud's family went to, and I imagine it was a very horrible place. This helped me understand why Mahmoud decided to leave and start walking to Austria, and also how relieved and thankful their family was to be reunited. I also find that I make lots of inferences while reading stories that help me find the big idea. To illustrate this, when Isabel's family heard the announcement from the US Coast Guard ship saying that they were in violation of US waters, I could already tell that some of them were losing hope, but others persevered and wouldn't give up. I end up with the big idea of a story after looking at the major themes and thinking about which theme is supported best by the text evidence.

This is how I find the big idea of a story, but there are many more ways and many more reading strategies that you can use! Some people might not even use any reading strategies, or some might use all of them. Everyone's mind works differently, so do things the way you do best!

Whenever my class starts a new Book Club, the most important aspect to focus on is the Big Idea. Now, you may be wondering: how am I supposed to find a Big Idea? I'm here to answer that question with my personal tips and tricks.

First of all, it's important for me to know the main events happening in a book to get a good plan of what it's centered around. An example is the book I'm reading: How to Steal a Dog. Many of the major plotlines revolve around the idea of making a positive history for yourself, or owning up to your mistakes if you haven't already. Therefore, I consider that possibility of a Big Idea to be an excellent conclusion for that book.

However, it also helps to connect the book you're reading with yourself, another piece of media, or even global events. In my case, I can connect the core ideas with both myself and the world. Starting with my text-to-self connection, I normally have trouble owning up to my mistakes, especially when I've lied about it for a number of weeks. Whenever luck is on my side though, I find a way to tell certain people about my failures, and ask them for support. I always hope I'm successful in the end!
In addition, my text-to-world connection is a problem I wish would turn out well: homelessness. Throughout the entire book, our main character Georgina struggles with not being able to live in a proper house, and that reminds me of the unfortunate lives many people have to deal with in the downtown eastside (DTES). Since I live next to the DTES, I commonly see homeless people in the streets. It makes me especially upset that this is still a problem because I've read a book about someone's experience as a homeless person, and I severely hope that the amount of suffering homeless people will decrease. Despite all that, I believe that these are great, proper Big Ideas that I have made up.

Figuring out a Big Idea can be a tough challenge for some, but using my strategies, I hope you can have a more pleasant time learning how to create a Big Idea.
