My favorite film that we watched would have to be The Glass Pearl. I found that the film was really emotionally charged. There were parts that were suspenseful, parts that were scary, and parts that were full of mixed emotions. Now, I'm not one to cry or let a movie make me feel emotions, but I have to say, this short film got me really close. I think that the message of the film is a very meaningful and classic one: never take what you have for granted, because you will never know what it will be like without everything. The boy in the story had nearly nothing, but he still did all he could to help his family. Going through trash bins looking for food, until he is forced to simply steal food. I think my favorite part of the story is the end, where it shows the boy with his collection of "glass pearls", marbles. It makes me wonder about what he does with them, what they are for. My only guess is that they represent some kind of treasure to him, because they are "pearls".

I find the film "Rupture" to be one of my favourites that made sense out of all them. I feel like that film was the best out of all of them was because of the storyline. It showed that the girl didn't like living in Canada and was mad at their parents for moving to Canada. She went to a swimming pool and had to past a test to earn a happy face. As for the first few tries, she didn’t succeed. She starts complaining about how Canada sucks and she wants to go back home. Soon enough, she hears her dad and mom arguing about her and what to make her like Canada. As she feels inspiration to try her best to make her parents proud. She soon made the test and was very happy. She also did not cheat the happy face thing like some of the other girls which shows that her integrity was strong and didn’t want to give up and make her parents proud. I found this film to make me very emotional as she never gave up. I feel like the message of this short film was to never give up and if u fail, climb back up and try again by improving more.

@Emily It's technically named "The Butterfly" as seen on the paper xD

Lawrence "The Butterfly" is just "La Mariposa" translated into English from Spanish. So it's "technically" the same thing

My favorite film was the butterfly, because Carlo was determined to pass the swim test. She had a chance to cheat just like the two girls in the locker room but she didn't. She didn't cheat because she wanted to acomplish the swim test for herself and wanted to feel good about it. I think what the director wanted to share with her audience is that if you don't accomplish it there is always other ways and more chances. Also that you shouldn't cheat in life. I really enjoyed this film and hope it teaches a lesson toward other people.

My favorite film was Negative Space. The reason why I chose this film is because, first of all it was the only animated film which relates to what we are actually doing at school presently and it was very smooth with the frams. Second of all the story was well written, made sense and enjoyable. This film showed how different families bond and connect in different ways. In this case the father and son bonded by they way of packing a suitcase. He would teach him at a young age and soon the son would pack his dad's case. When the father reached his destination he would open his case and text him the word PERFECT. That word meant a lot in their bonding. The ending of the story was sad but ended kind of funny. Overall I'd rate this a 5/5 film compared to the other films.

I found the Reel to Real film festival very enjoyable. I loved watching all the different videos and hearing the story behind La Mariposa from the producer. My favourite video was the film Negative Space. The animation was very smooth and unique and I loved how the packing scenes were presented. The ending was a little creepy to my but I still really enjoyed it.

My absolute favourite out of all of the short films, was La Mariposa (The Butterfly). I enjoyed it the most because Carol's determined to pass the swim test only to get a smiley face drawn on her shoulder. When she was in the locker room she found two girls that were faking the little smiley face. She had a chance to cheat, but she didn't take it because she wanted to do it for herself.
It made me feel joy and love. The message the film maker wanted to share is that when your trying to do something and you fail the first time you have to try again and if you have a chance to cheat sure you can do it but your not doing it for yourself. The film was very heart warming. They even moved from Latin America to Canada without knowing any english. It's easy to see that not only the girl was struggling but the parents did too.

The R2R festival was a fun way to learn about animation and also get to watch some cool films that had a deeper meaning behind them, as well as learn about the director for The Butterfly. My film that caught my attention the most was The butterfly about the little girl and her family that came to Canada as refugees. This film caught my attention, because of the young girl's determination and perseverance to learn how to swim. I personally connected to it because it reminds me of times when I have to perseverance at my swim practices, and in the past when I was also first learning how to Swim. If I just gave up, it wouldn't get me anywhere. I would never get better, and my times would all just stay the same. I admire her strength to keep going, even when others shut her down. I feel that is an important lesson that everyone should learn. To work hard and never give up. The butterfly was personally my favourite film.

The Festival

This festival was a really fun. My favourite film was probably Rupture because it is a really interesting film and it’s story behind was really clear. This films story was clear because even though she wanted to pass the test so that she can have the special mark on her shoulder she couldent becasue the first few times she tried she wasn’t good enough but finally she passed. While she was in the changing room one day before she was about to go swimming she saw two girls cheating the system and drawing two happy faces on each other’s shoulders and as she was about to follow them she chose not to and to try to pass this test the right way. Because her family moved to Canada as a refuge she wasn’t used to Canada and it didn’t feel like home to her and she wanted to go back and after the few times she failed the test she started to complain how Canada sucks. After passing this test in swimming she became really happy and made her parents proud. The message of the story is to never give u; of you want something so bad.

My favorite film was probably negative space because it had really good and precise animation. It had a bittersweet story line and you could see all the little details in the characters and the backgrounds that they put in. It made me feel sad and also hopeful when he was talking about the one day the dad sent him a one word text that made him feel special: PERFECT. The end of the story was a bit suspenseful because we were all waiting to see what he would say about his dad. What he did say was shocking and I kind of understand why he said that. The way the animation worked was really smooth, and the memories were as clear as ice. I think he message that the film producer was trying to spread is that you should appreciate how much your parents love and care for you because some kids don't have a strong bond with their parents. Even when you grow old and go through "phases", you should still respect them and be polite because the best thing that they gave you was not food, water or shelter. It is LIFE and LOVE.

My favorite of all films was "Negative Space", as it was precisely detailed and coordinated. It was easy to see that the filmmakers put a lot of effort into the creation of this short movie, and that was what made it enjoyable to watch. The detailing they put on the characters, set, and more was astonishing. The plot and story line was clear and was easy to understand, and told a story about how Sam, the main character, bonded with his father over the least you'd expect: packing a suitcase. His father would leave on business trips constantly and Sam would often pack for him. One day, Sam received a text from his father, saying his work was good in a single word: Perfect. The ending was a sarcastic way of remembering his father's training. I had this continual feeling that Sam's father didn't care a lot for his son, but still taught him to do important things in life. I think the message the movie is trying to send is that you should be grateful for all the little things in life your parents teach you. They've been here for a much longer time than you have, so the things they tell you to do are most likely measured with wisdom. These small yet essential things can hold a lot of meaning too, such as bonding, so next time if YOUR parents tell you to empty the dishwasher, do it, because they know it's better for you, and you can learn to continually do it over and over and over and over again.

My favorite film was Negative Space because I find it cool to animate with little toys and handcrafted miniatures. It tells a story between a father and son’s relationship through packing a suitcase. When it shows Sam packed to go to his dad’s funeral, he had a flashback of when his dad and he were packing to go somewhere. During the film, I felt sad when the father passed away because it reminded me of my feeling when my great grandma passed away. I think the film maker wants to share the message that each family has a different way of bonding and showing love and care to each other.

My favourite film was the negative film because all the other films were sort of a video, but this one was like claymation. Since we are doing animation like that, I know how hard it was to make it and the film was hilarious . It really made me feel wonder about how much space humans really take up because at the end he looks at the coffin and says what wasted space. I think the big idea is that no matter how busy your father is, they will have relationship with their child, through baseball, basketball and even luggage. Every father loves their child.

The R2R festival was a pretty interesting experience. We watched a couple of short films and learned more about stop motion animation. How they work and how to make them. It also tied in nicely with the animations we're making right now.

My favourite film was probably Negative Space. This film is probably one of the best short films I’ve ever seen. First what I liked about it was the way it was done. It had great clean animations with a very meaningful and great story that I felt like I could connect with. A few seconds into the movie and you could already tell it how much effort the creators put into the movie. I especially liked the scene where the boy, Sam is miniaturized. It was really interesting and cool how they did that. I don’t know about you guys but for me the story was a little confusing. But I could tell what the main idea was. Since his dad was away on a lot of business trips, they didn’t have the time to connect or bond over other things like basketball for example. So they connected through the art of efficiently packing a suitcase (which is pretty important to be honest) instead. Sort of like with my dad. He’s not as busy as some other parents I know but he is away on a lot of business trips and other things. Which is why we didn’t really bond over the things other people usually bond over. For example video games, sports and such. We did do those things, but not enough to connect over. Instead it was debating or simply discussing random things like world economics for example. It’s a weird way to connect with my dad, just like how Sam connected with his dad. I think the message that the filmmaker wanted to share is that even if it seems like there’s nothing that two people can connect over, there is always something (no matter how weird) that they can have a relationship of some sort over.

The films were all really great, from swimming butterflies to a kid hitting dem poor trees...well done! They all had special meanings and symbols they want you to understand at the end of the films. There were the obvious meanings and the ones that require more deep thinking; so obviously, coming back from a tournament feeling really, extremely wasted...I'll be choosing a film with an easier meaning (at least i think :/) to talk about. Wheeeeee~

Rupture
By: Yassmina Karajah
The first connection that came to mind for me was that, "Hey, I've been through some of this, I know how it must feel like, how lost they probably felt! (even though I am born here)"

Let's get to know a little about me before we start hearing me blab about blab (basically most of my ideas would be expressed here): I was born in Canada, and then when I was three 1/2, I moved to China and graduated from Pre-school and went there for elementary for 1 1/2 years. Sadly, I lost 85% of my English in that process. Then in the second month of 2013, I moved back to Canada; I felt like a stranger, like I don't belong here. My mom had to remind me many times that, this was Homeland, I was born here.

Then I had school.

Joining the Richmond School District wasn't fun. I got dragged into the building where you sign up for schools and for everything educational. My mom did most of the talking, but I kid you not, her English wasn't much better (even now). We signed up for a school and they gave me a test for English. I remember a guy pulling out flash cards for me to read and a little booklet. I failed so bad. Yeah, to make matters worse, I ended up in ESL. GROSS.

To be suddenly thrown into a grade one and two classroom which had English as their main language, complete with carpets, stuffies, pictures-books and a pregnant teacher (none of that back in schools in China) half way across the world, fun. Yeah, and don't get me started with the sideways looks the kids think I can't see. I can totally relate to the kids in the film, even though it doesn't show up, I bet when they just moved to BC, they get enough looks to eat for breakfast. Being survivors of war isn't great either, then to escape, move to a new side of the globe, try to learn a new language with no improvement whatsoever, I can kind of relate. They already feel so helpless, lost and dazed. And with their parents arguing about things that they can't know about. Then, suddenly, as if getting locked inside a bathroom that is totally your gender wasn't bad enough, you brother dies.
BAM.
Ruptured. Having your emotions snap like spaghetti is not cool.

My favourite film was The Butterfly. I feel like the film and I really clicked as I wasn’t a good swimmer when I was first starting out. When I first saw the title I expected it to be about competitive swimming because of it’s name. Then when I found out it was about a little girl learning how to swim I fell I love with it. It connected with me and it really connected how we were alike in that moment. I feel the director of this short film, told the story on how you should never give up. Even though it may take days or even months. You still must try your very best. I think the other message she was trying to send us is to use our integrity. Like the scene where she could have chosen to cheat but chose not to. Overall all the film in the festival was awesome. I would really love to go to the R2R again next year.

She should invite me to her next short film! 😝

The R2R festival was pretty good and I had a good time. My favourite film was probably the Butterfly. The reason is because this film was the only film that made sense and was long enough to be interesting. This film gave me courage to face the things that stresses me out and it encouraged me to try my best on everything. I think the author is trying to tell us that no matter how hard things are, we still have to try our best and not give up.
