Today was another great day of learning! We finished our Spring Break Raps and most groups also finished filming their French animations. Division 1 is now working on transformations in Math with Mr. Hong and Division 2 started graphing linear equations today. Next week division 1 will start editing their animations and adding a sound track, effects and voice overs. They should be ready to watch in a weeks time!
1) Reminders:
  • PLEASE BRING IN THE GRADE 7 CELEBRATION CONTRIBUTION OF $25!!!
2) Post A Response:
  • Today in story we found out that Cole was going back to the island. One of the key reasons he got another chance on the island was because of Edwin's demonstration with cole where he walked with him and ended up shoving him to the ground
  • Explain what Edwin did with Cole.
  • What point was he trying to get across?
  • Do you agree or disagree that this was a key event in keeping Cole out of Jail?

During today's story time, Edwin was proving that going to prison wasn't the best way to change Cole. The presentation that Edwin gave was showing people change after a tragic accident and over time. Edwin was trying to get across was that sending him to jail might not change Cole and stuff like the tragic accident changes his feelings and his emotions. It was a way showing how sending him to jail might not change him or make him worse and that sending him to an island, can prove that he has changed. I actually agree with this idea as for not Edwin, Cole might be the same old guy he is.

The point of Edwin's demonstration was to show how a person can change. In one, they leaned against each other while walking in a straight line, and by the end, Cole had only moved slightly. In another, Edwin pushed Cole quick and hard, sending Cole to the floor far away from the line. The first represents how a person changes over time, after persistent pressure in a direction. The second represents how a person changes after experiencing a traumatic event, such as in the case of Cole's mauling.

I personally don't think that the demonstration was the sole reason that Cole was not sent to jail. It may have persuaded some of the members of the Circle's minds, but there must've have been larger or more important factors. My guess as to what may have been the key factor in keeping Cole out of jail is that Garvey may hold alot of weight within the Circle. Then, when he and Edwin asked to take control of Cole's case, the Circle agreed.

Also that picture is vaguely terrifying....

Edwin was trying to prove that Cole is a changed person. By shoving Cole to the floor, he proved two things. The old Cole wouldn't have hesitated to retaliate with fists swinging. Instead, Cole just questioned Edwin's action. Edwin used the pair walking side by side to symbolize them walking down the path of life that Cole had been taking; a bad one. By shoving Cole, Edwin was trying to represent the bear attack. This traumatic event had caused Cole to fly off his old path and in the direction of a new one. This seemed to be pretty effective. I think that this action convinced many of the circle members who were against having Cole sent back to the island.

Edwin was explaining the ways people change. The first way was changing gradually over time with a slow constant pressure symbolized by Edwin pushing Cole over a line in the floor bit by bit. Another way people change is with a sudden push or extreme event like a near death experience which was symbolized by Edwin suddenly pushing Cole over the line unexpectedly. The point he was trying to get across is that people can change gradually with pressure or suddenly like Cole did after being in a near death experience. I think that was a key point in keeping Cole out of jail because it opened up another possibility, that he may have changed after two days one island. Before what Edwin said that people were skeptical of Cole changing, but after Edwin's example or demonstration of people changing in other ways they started to see that he might've actually changed.

Edwin asked Cole to do a demonstration with him; there was line in the floor. Edwin used as a 'line of life' as that both of them were going through life with problems, I think. Edwin then nudged Cole a bit and he strayed a bit from the line, then he pushed Cole hard that sent him sprawling across the floor, far from the line.

He was pointing out how little Cole got away from the line when he just nudged him and how far he got when he pushed him. I think he was saying that sometimes you need something significant, dramatic, a life altering situation or event to get you to have a new perspective on the world. Or that sometimes that might be the key to change the way you think wrongly.

Yes, it was. Well, at least, sort of. Cole has "learned his lesson" and he's being honest even though the majority doesn't believe him. It kind of reminds me of "the boy Who Cried Wolf." The most of the members in the Circle just want to get rid of him and sent him jail. Most of them don't understand. Cole does have to pay for his consequences, to rebuilt what he has destroyed; to earn other's trust and his own.

In the part of the touching spirit bear that we read today, Edwin was trying to prove a point, by demonstrating something with Cole. First, they walked along a line together side by side. At the end of the line Edwin had only managed to push Cole slightly. In my opinion, that was signifying that if Cole was left to deal with his anger without the sudden Bear mauling, that he may have learned to control his anger and get better... but bit by bit. It would take some time for him to learn. When Edwin and Cole walked the “line of life” for the second time, he shoved Cole and pushed him directly to the floor multiple feet away from the line where they were. This time when he shoved Cole I think it was symbolizing the Bear attack. It was a dramatic event that instantly made Cole question his life, and what he was doing with it. That made a more dramatic change in his attitude and behaviour.
I think that Edwin was trying to show that Cole needed a reality check, and wake up call that would get him going in the right direction and back up in his feet. The Bear gave that to him. Maybe everyone else could give him a second chance to make things better.

In the part of touching spirit bear we read yesterday, the demonstration Edwin did with Cole proved 2 things: it proved that Cole is a changed person ever since he was mauled by the spirit bear. When Edwin pushed him slightly, Cole only moved slightly away from the imaginary line of life. That symbolizes changing gradually over time. When Edwin shoved Cole hard and sent him flying across the floor, that symbolizes that a near death experience or a life changing one can show a person's change at heart in a blink of an eye. The point he was trying to make is that people can change gradually over time or they can change ever so suddenly just like Cole did after he was mauled. I think that is a key point of why Cole stayed out of jail.
He may have changed in the amount of time that he spent on the island. I also think another reason why he wasn't sent to jail is because of the circle and because it won't change who you are. It will just make you angrier and you will think about everything that makes you mad, like what Cole thought when he first got to the island. Jail won't heal you, it will only infuriate you even more and you won't be able to change your actions.

Edwin showed how Cole had changed at the circle meeting. When he pushed Cole to the ground Cole did not retaliate. Instead he commented on the push. Old Cole would have get up and punch. The point Edwin is trying to get to is that people can change little by little, like when they were walking on the line and gently leaning on each other causing Cole to move a few feet away from the line. Or you could change with something extreme and significant happen in your life, like when Edwin pushed him to the ground. I think sending him to the island was a good choice for 2 reasons. One, it will keep out of jail longer. Two, he may change even more like when he got mulled by the bear. So if he changes he may be proven non-guilty at court.

Edwin showed to the circle that before the bear attack he would’ve norammally shoved a person back if someone shoved him. By what Edwin did he made a point that cole is less agreesive and probably changed. I think it was a key event to keep cole out of jail because Edwin made a point to the circle showing that maybe he did learn his lesson and maybe jail is not the right thing for cole and maybe putting him in the environment where he was attacked and almost died he was a better choice.

During the Circle meeting, Edwin demonstrated how a single injurious event can change a person better than consistent pressure. In the first demonstration, Edwin leaned on Cole, trying to push him away from the line that symbolized a bad path. In the end, Edwin had only succeeded in gaining a few feet. In the second, he pushed Cole quickly, resulting in Cole flying meters away from the line.

The first scenario indicated how sending Cole to jail, although probably the more logical choice, would send Cole on a new path, but after several years. As well as that, it showed that a person could change with constant pressure. The second showed how the mauling had traumatized Cole and sent him in a new direction away from the line, quicker and more efficient than having Cole incarcerated in a prison.

Although probably not the main factor in having the Circle release Cole to the custody of Edwin and Garvey, this demonstration may have changed the Circle's view on Cole. It most likely convinced them that Cole had really indeed changed his mindset after the vicious attack by the spirit bear, which was a reason that Cole was released.

Edwin tricked Cole to prove he has changed. He shoved Cole to the ground showing that he didn't punch him after he shoved him on the ground. I think the point was that Cole has changed not entirely, but in a direction leading to the right path. I disagree this kept Cole out of jail because if it did he would have been on the island right after, but I think it was becuase of Garvey and Edwin convincing the circle.

Edwin was trying to explain how, in life something could change the path you areheaded in life. When he pushed him it showed that Cole has changed from the attack. You can see this when cole did not attack Edwin after the attack/push. I agreee that this is the key event because this is the moment we’re he changed and was e

Edwin was trying to prove that Cole has indeed changed by demonstrating. When Edwin pushed/shoved Cole, he didn't react the old way he would've but instead he just asked why he pushed him. That part showed character development. If it was the old Cole, he would've had his fists up already but he showed that he's changed. Edwin was trying to get across that sending Cole to jail wouldn't changed him but maybe either putting him back to the island or putting him in an environment with the right people would be a better choice than letting. him go to jail.

Edwin tried to explain that if are walking together on a line, you either get pushed hard once or push each other slowly. The point of Edwin doing so is to tell them that if you push too hard, he will fall out of the line of life. I think this might have been one of the reasons Cole went back to the island, but I also think there were more reasons for Cole to go back.
