Global Read aloud & thanksgiving long weekend

10/6/2018

Picture
On Friday we made some huge progress on the Plant ID projects, which are now due next week. Students were working so hard on meeting the learning intentions by completing all of the criteria  that we just had to extend the due date.  Below are some examples of how amazing some of the displays look after repeated feedback and improvements.
We also started the GLOBAL READ ALOUD (click) This is a project where people all around the world read a particular book and then connect via social media such as email, blogging and video calls to and discuss the novel. We are reading, Amal Unbound (click) by Aisha Saeed. Students are encouraged to try and get a copy of the book, either at the library, book store or an online version. Students are not required to have a copy but it is especially helpful for English Language Learners in following the story. Have a fantastic Thanksgiving long weekend!

1) Reminders and Homework:
  • Home reading. (30 minutes each day)
  • Listen to your parents and help out around the house.
  • Spend time with your family, relax and have fun!
  • No School Monday!
2) Post A Response:
  • In paragraph form (intro/topic sentence, body/supporting sentences and examples, and concluding sentence), write about 2-3 things you are thankful for!
  • Example:  "Muahahahhahahaahahahahahhahaha!" What was that sound you ask? Well, let me tell you.  That was the sound of pure happiness!  A few things I am thankful for include my job, my family, and my friends.  For example, I am thankful for my job because I get to help students become capable learners through .  In addition to this, I'm thankful for my family because they bring joy to my life. I can't imagine what my life would be like without my wife and my two children. Finally, I am thankful for my friends because we have fun together and they always give me support.  I have many things to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.  What are you thankful for?
  • Give one student a suggestion for improvement based on 'PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE' or the 'GIVENS' (spelling, capitals, grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, etc).

Thanksgiving is a holiday to appreciate what you have, this year I am appreciative if many things. I am very appreciative of my family, house and education. I am thankful of my family because they provide everything for me and keep me happy when i’m sad. I am also appreciative of my house because i get to feel safe when i’m in it. Lastly i’m appreciative of my education because some kids don’t have education and so i’m thankful for my education and great teachers. In conclusion you should understand that not everyone in the world has what you have so be appreciative.

Thanksgiving is a holiday where people around the world celebratte and give thanks for what they have. I give thanks for these things: family, education and last of all access to a device or the internet. I give thanks for these thing because sometimes we just take our family for granted until they’re gone. I also give thanks for free edit which is a privilege not many in the world have. And the internet of course as Mr.Fisher said,” your device can be a great learning tool but, it can also be a great distraction.” All in all I give thanks for these things that I usually take for granted.

_____Thanksgiving is a time to thank anyone and anything for something. I am thankful for my parents, my friends and my education.

_____Finding a good program for high school was a tough job. But my parent had helped me and signed me up for synergy program at Churchill high. They have also planned everything out and helped me created my portfolio for the test.

_____Moving away from my old school was tough. However, because i have such supportive friends and classmates i now feel normal again. Thanks to all of you, my classmates and teacher, for supporting me feel comfortable in a new environment.

_____Finally, I am thankful for my education. Although i come from french immersion, and may not learn as much of it as before. However, i am sure that my English skills will improve a lot throughout this school year.

_____Thanks to all of you that supported me and encouraged me. I hope that all of you can enjoy your thanksgiving.

You forgot to capitalize some i and I think that thanksgiving needs to be capitalized. Overall, great job!

Many people know what Thanksgiving is, but what are they thankful for?
I am thankful for a nice family to support my learning and my life. I am also thankful to get the opportunity to be able to go to school as you may know that many kids cannot participate in school. I am also very thankful to be able to learn to play the piano because, many people may not have the time or the money to learn to play this instrument.
Thanksgiving is a time to say thanks to everyone, so you should too!

I am thankful for my dad and my mom that have taken me almost around the world and no matter where we go , they will always look at the good side of everything , they'll protect me and take good care of me, I am also thankful for my sister that will always be next to me to help me with anything and I am also thankful for all of the privileges that I have that many people don't have them like a roof, good food, and a family so think about what you have and be thankful for all the stuff you have.

Jorge, maybe you can try breaking it into multiple sentences instead of it being one whole sentence. Other than that, great job!

There are many things to give thanks to this Thanksgiving, and these are just some I find important.

I am thankful to live in a peaceful country. Children in other countries have to deal with civil wars, and live in a dangerous world each day. Yet Canadians have to deal with none of that. We don't have any large wars we're part of and terrorism has not affected us that much.

I am thankful for my family, who have given me the opportunity to participate in school, and other extracurricular activities, and who have helped me every step of the way. Many children around the globe cannot participate in school, for several reasons. Some children don't even have parents.

I feel thankful that we all have the necessities - and even some things we don't need but want. We have shelter, access to food and water easily, and clothing. We even have such luxuries as to be able to play video games or watch TV.

There are many things to feel thankful this Thanksgiving, and these are only some of them. Stay safe, and enjoy your Thanksgiving!

-Joseph

Good job Joseph!

Maybe try to include the fact that we have the freedom of speech in Canada. Remember, if you strip freedom from a person, you are left with a hollow spirit.

I’m very thankful for being in this world and have loving parents and family members. I’m also thankful for being educated and able to go to school. I’m thankful to have friends and have shelter/home to stay in everyday. I’m thankful that I get to eat and play, some people around the world don’t get that. So I’m very thankful for that!

To be thankful for something is to appreciate it. To acknowledge the fact that it benefited your life.

Now, as a proud Canadian, I live in a peaceful and fun environment. I don't have to worry about tiny things like if have enough food for the day. I don't have to live in constant fear of being bombed or shot. I don't worry about if I am going to be alive or not at the end of the day. I live in luxury compared to many people around the world.

I am thankful to have a loving family that I can count on every single day. I know that my parents love me and I know that they have sacrificed most of their life just for me and my sister. They can be strict at times, but they are doing it for the good of me.

I am extremely thankful that I get the proper education that I need and also get extra help from extra activities. I am thankful for having teachers that love their jobs and dedicate themselves into bringing out the best of me and my peers.

I am thankful that I have freedom and my own opinion. I am thankful that I can choose whatever I want to do and have ability to stand up for myself. I am thankful that I don't have rules that weigh me down or directions that tell me what to do.

I feel thankful for many things in the world and I hope that one day, maybe everyone could live the way I do, in a loving and caring environment.

I am thankful for my family, friends and being able to go to school. I am thankful for my family because they take care of me, especially my parents. My parents always have my back and will always make me feel safe, They keep a roof over my head and provide me with health and education. My brothers help me in work and hangs out with me. They cheer me up when Im not feeling good and they're always with me. Im am thankful for my friends because they care about me and they're always willing to hang out, If I had no friends I would be very sad. So I am very thankful for my friends. I am thankful for my education because without it wouldn't have my friends and I wouldn't get smart and civilized. To have education is a big deal because you get to learn and hang out with your friends. I am very thankful for all these things and I hope everyone is thankful for what they have.

I am thankful for having an amazing family. This family is the reason why I am who I am. Without them I wouldn't have been able to dream the things I dream of. I am able to work to the best of my abilities to achieve my goals.

Another thing I am thankful for is my friends. I always move from place to place in my childhood and to be able to think I have best friends is amazing. They have helped me grow as a person and improve my bad habits. I will never take any of them for granted.

Why is there Thanksgiving Day?What do we do to celebrate it?Aside from being with my family and having a feast, I always take a moment to feel thankful.

First, I feel deeply thankful that my parents raise me up to be the person that I am today, supporting me with their unconditional love when things are rough. Second, I am sincerely thankful for having my friends. They accept who I am and bring all the laughter and memories to my life. Lastly, I am truly thankful for being a proud Canadian and living in Vancouver, one of the most livable places in the world.

There are far more things that I would like to show thanks to. On this special occasion, feeling thankful makes me feel joy, peace, strong connections to the world.

Happy Thanksgiving!
