Knowledge building circles

Criteria created by the students for Knowledge Building Circle Groups in Inquiry
Today Division 1 and 2  spent the morning working on their  Plant Identification and First Nations Use Project. We were so impressed with how well groups worked together. Students were engaged for over an hour on their projects. I saw and heard many students asking for both peer and teacher feedback to improve their projects. They then took this feedback and applied it to make their projects even better. It was amazing to see you all using the BIG 6 Principles of Learning. That is what taking OWNERSHIP over your learning looks like! AWESOME JOB!! In the afternoon, we got our Inquiry Knowledge Building Groups and created some criteria/ground rules for meeting and then dove into our questions! Again, we were so impressed with the ownership and self regulation shown by the group. Keep it up.....because the year is just underway and.....THE LEARNING NEVER STOPS!!!
1) Homework:
  • Math Focus:      Page 13    Page 14
  • Keep Inquiring if you have time because...THE LEARNING NEVER STOP!!!
2) Post A Response:
  • Explain a daily Inquiry work period form start to finish in detail...(think about what you did today!)
  • HERE IS A SENTENCE FRAME TO GET YOU STARTED:
  • When we are ready to start inquiring the first thing we do is meet with our knowledge building circle and_________________. After we have completed our_______________________ we____________......NOW YOU KEEP GOING RIGNT UNTIL THE VERY END OF THE INQUiRY PERIOD!
  • Provide feedback to another student to help them improve their explanation of an inquiry work period.
  • Revise your post based on the feedback you receive.

Hey everyone,
I need some help finding indigenous uses for our plant ID project. How did you guys search for them (using which keywords, which websites?)

Thanks in advance.

you could use canadian encyclopedia. Or you can sort of relate it to other plants. example: blackberry was a food, then thimble berry or salmon berry might also be foods...

The first thing we do during our inquiry period is we meet up in our knowledge building groups. In our groups we discuss the criteria shortly then we talk about what we want to aim for in the period today. After we write it on our sheet then we get somone to sign it. Now we go and research on our inquiry questions and try to complete your goal.

Mr. Fisher
10/2/2018 06:29:12 pm

Can you be more specific? What about at the end of the period? Be very specific!

vincent qi

@mr fisher you spell "word" instead of "Work" for inquiry WORK period

vincent qi
10/2/2018 04:55:59 pm

also for "NOW YOU KEEP GOING RIGNT UNTILL THE VERY END OF THE INQUiRY PERIOD!" you spelled "UNTILL" instead of "UNTIL".
and "RIGNT" instead of "RIGHT".

Mr. Fisher

I don't think that was what Mr.Fisher meant.

(Although he was unclear . . . 🤔)

Mountain

When we are ready to start inquiring, we do is to meet up with our knowledge building group.
Then we discussed about the cirteria and what to do to and what not to do.
We then wrote down what we planned to do today and then after the time was up we had rate ourselfs on how much work we have finished in that time.
We also had to sign the criteria chart to show that we all agree on what's on the chart.

Kheyria

I think what you meant to say was "what we do" after the first comma.

When we are ready to start inquiring the first thing we do is meet with our knowledge building circle and we plan out the criteria. After we have completed our criteria, we write down our plan on what we will be doing during this time. Then we get someone to check it for us so that we can start on our work.

Mr. Fisher
10/2/2018 06:31:47 pm

Nice start! What about after research time? What then? Be specific.

Kheyria
10/2/2018 06:30:49 pm

In the beginning of our inquiry period, we meet up with our knowledge building groups and acknowledge the criteria for our group (and possibly others). Then we discuss about what we are aiming to find out by saying our goal for the work period. Then we settle down and start inquiring! As we search up questions on the internet we record our new found knowledge and sources in our A.S.O.T books. At the end of our inquiring we go around our group saying what new thing we learned and our reactions. We also provide feedback to our peers. When that's done, we get our green sheets signed by our group members for proof that we did something and we wright down wheather we got 0, 1+, or 2+. We then get our teachers to check our work, and DONE!

(P.S you can tell that when Mr.Fisher uses caps when typing about inquiry that he really loves inquiry.😂)

Mr. Fisher
10/2/2018 06:50:16 pm

I DO LOVE INQUIRY!!!!!! Kheyria, this is a great explanation. It is just missing one important action. It happens just before you head off to start researching. Can you remember what we do and why we do it? YOU CAN DO IT!

PS. Did I mention that.......I LOVE INQUIRY!!!

When we are ready to start inquiring the first thing we do is meet with our knowledge building circle and write down what you're going to do on that day. When we are ready to start inquiring the first thing we do is meet with our knowledge building circle and discuss about what our daily goals are. After we have completed our discussing about plans we sign each others papers to show that we have discussed the daily goal. Then we try to complete our daily goal with the time we have. Or as Ms.Tan's famous saying "USE YOUR TIME WISELY!" Then at the end of our work period, we get back into our group and talk about our progress and mark ourselves depending on our progress.

David
10/2/2018 07:20:59 pm

At the very beginning of the inquiry process, basically the minute we step into the library, we meet up with our knowledge building circle and talk about the criteria and what we are going to do for the day. Then we discuss and write down our goals for the day such as researching or typing. When we are finished that, we get the ipads or whatever equipment we need and we start the inquiry researching stage. We write down important notes and sources in our ASOT books. (All sorts of things) AT the end, we get back together and share what we did in this period and we help out each other by giving them suggestions. We give ourselves an evaluation on what we did today and have someone to sign it. This is how you do the Inquiry.

Ivan
10/2/2018 07:24:35 pm

When we are ready to start inquiring the first thing we do is meet with our knowledge building circle and discuss about what our daily goals are. After you have set your goals you will need to ask a teacher to make sure that what you wrote down was specific enough. Once the teacher approves it then you need to ask another member in your group to sign it. Once your done all of that then you will try to complete your goal that you wrote down. At the end of your lesson you talk to your group about how everything is going so far , and then you mark yourself either from 0,1, or 2 depending on how well you did that period.

When we do daily inquiry we start with meeting up with our groups. Then we start with our daily planing sheet and write what were going to to do that day. Then we try to get done whatever we wrote down on the planning sheet. When thats done we get back in our groups and talk about what we did. Then at the end of that you line up rate your self out of one two or three then line up and go back to class.

when we are ready to start inquiry the first thing we do is meet up with our knowledge building circles and write our plans for that period. After we have completed our plan for the day we find a peer in our group and get them to sign it. Then we research and try to reach our plan for that day and then we work until the end of that section of the day.

When we are ready to start inquiring the first thing we do is meet with our knowledge building circle and write our daily goals. Then, we find someone to sign it to verify we did our goal or if our goal is an actual goal that we can do. After, we have completed our reasaerch, we discuss our information with our groups. Lastly, we go back to to our daily goal sheet and write wether you didn't think you did well or you think you did well by writing numbers.....NOW WE KEEP GOING RIGNT UNTIL THE VERY END OF THE INQUIRY PERIOD!

When we are ready to start inquiring the first thing we do is meet with our knowledge building circle, review our c-charts and plan out our daily goals. After we have completed our research/daily goal, and we discuss what we have learned with our groups, receive feedback from our group, or give feedback to help others... NOW YOU KEEP GOING RIGHT UNTIL THE VERY END OF THE INQUIRY PERIOD!
