Today we learned more about natural selection and how it works. Turns out it's kind of simple. So, we did an activity that included BEANS! We had 4 different species. Knifes (the best :), spoons, forks and chopsticks. We had three generations and the species with the most people surviving were crowned as the dominant species.

Well some species survived and died because their "harvesting tools" weren't as useful as some others were. Some were well adapted so they could scoop up the beans more easily, For example, the chopsticks already became extinct during the first generation. Their tool wasn't the best for and environment with beans because they had to pick each one up one by one. They couldn't really scoop because they had skinny little sticks.

Knife were most successful. Why? Well it wasn't only their tools that made them the most successful. They used their minds and thought of strategies to make it more fast and easy. They chose to use the cracks to scoop up the beans. They were also the most successful because knives are longer giving them more space to scoop up the beans.

Simulations help us know more about what is happening around the world because there are many species that could be evolving out there or could possibly still evolve further in the future. They show use how they have changed in their environment, adapting new abilities as they have offsprings. Simulations like this are helpful because it can help solve problems in our world and it can teach us how wild life adapt to their surroundings and slowly evolve.

Today we simulated multiple species living, dying, and producing offspring over many generations. A process which is called natural selection evolving over time with different changes over many generations.

Some species today died rather quickly because of features that hindered them from catching prey. For example the chopsticks were harder to use than the spoons, forks, and knives for catching prey so they died out. The forks, knives, and spoons survived because their features gave them significant advantages for catching prey as they could easily scoop up large groups of beans while the chopsticks couldn't.

The chopsticks could only pick up about 1 bean at a time, so they didn't have a good animal to food ratio. This means that they died out a lot faster than the others.

The spoons were the most successful because they had the best scooping capabilities. This allowed them to catch multiple prey at once allowing them to all survive easily.

Simulations like these help us understand what is happening in the world around us by giving us an insight on how natural selection works. The idea that it gives us help us understand it better and connect it to real animals over many generations.

Simulations like this are helpful because it allows us to connect what we've learned to the animals which are the real thing. In other words it gives us a metaphorical insight on the matter.

@Koby- Thanks for the great PAR. Sorry you got chopsticks and didn't get to participate much

cw
1/21/2020 07:45:24 pm

Why did some species survive and other die? Some species survived because they had easier ways to get prey, or you can say the were more adapted with the environment. Other species will have to get prey or be adapted with its environment more difficultly, and they won't get enough food to eat.
What happened to the chopsticks? Why? The chopsticks went extinct in the first generation. The reason is that it was too hard to get the beans using chopsticks.
Which was the most successful? Why? The most successful was the knifes. The reason is that it will be easy to pick up beans because of the sharp end of the blade.
How do simulations help us better understand what is happening in the world around us? You can learn how which animals die, or live according to an activity where you can be the animal to see if you get extinct or not.
Why are simulations like this helpful? I think These are helpful because they can help us understand natural selection, and also learn which animals are better or not. For instance if there is a bean eater animal, you will know after a simulation that the ones with knife hands will survive, and the ones with chopstick hands won't.

Today we did an activity about natural selection. It kind of simulates the process of natural selection. We used BEANS to did this fun activity.

Well, the chopsticks species had extinct first because chopsticks weren't helpful tools so they didn't "survive". They weren't helpful tools because you need to pick up the beans one by one if you are using chopsticks.

The most successful "species" was the knifes. The reason is that it's easy to pick up beans using the sharp end of the blade.

I think this kind of simulation were helpful because it helps us understand and memorize the theory of natural selection.

Before answering the questions, I just want to say that this stimulation was really REALLY surprising!
Why did some species survive and other die?
I think some of the species survived to reproduce because they developed techniques to get the beans into their hands (mouths). These techniques really helped adapt them to their environment because they found out how to get food so much easier.
What happened to the chopsticks? Why?
Because the beans were tinier, they could only pick up one bean at a time. What makes it even harder is that they only got 30 seconds so, they could probably only get a maximum of 30-32. Also, other species moved much faster and could get many beans on their utensil at once.
Which was the most successful?
My team, THE KNIVES were the best adapted to their environment and were the most successful. The reason for this was because we all developed a technique (which I am going to keep a secret for now:)).
How do simulations help us better understand what is happening in the world around us?
Simulations can help us because if we act like the species, we can understand how hard it is for them to collect food, find shelter, survive and much more. We can also see the differences in tactics and techniques.
Why are simulations like this helpful?
As answered in the last question, I think simulations are helpful because we can best understand how much harder some species lives are then others and how well they are adapted to their environment.

@Emily- Great behavioural adaptations:) Please separate your paragraphs to make everything easier to read by separating your ideas.

Emily K
1/21/2020 08:34:22 pm

@Everyone
The beans were impossible to pick up with o-the sharp ends of the blades because the beans were just too firm to poke through the skin. Can you figure out another tactic we used?

Natural Selection

Natural selection is basically the survival of the fittest which means that the better and stronger survive and the weaker and poor die out. Today in class we did a simulation with beans and 4 different species (chopsticks, forks, knives and spoons) to see what would happen with natural selection and those species. We had to pick up the average amount/catch enough prey to survive or else we would die out and the people who did make it would reproduce.

WHY DID SOME SPECIES SURVIVE AND OTHERS DIE?
I think that some species survived because they became more adapted to the situation and how they had to catch the prey while others just couldn’t handle it for example the chopsticks because you could only pick up one bean at a time while the spoons, forks and knives could pick up more than one bean at a time.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE CHOPSTICKS AND WHY?
I kind of already answered that but the chopsticks died out before the first generation was over. It happened because they didn’t have the technique to get more than 1 prey at a time.

WHICH WAS THE MOST SUCCESSFUL AND WHY?
Very surprisingly the knives were the most successful. I think that the knives we most successful because knives are flat so it’s easier to scoop up and you don’t have to do it in as much of an angle as the other species. Also because knives have a bigger surface so it could pick up more. Also the knives were most adapted to the situation which helped them do better.

HOW DO SIMULATIONS HELP US BETTER UNDERSTAND WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE WORLD AROUND US?
Simulations help us understand better because we can actually see it and not just visualize. We also participate so we know what it feels like to be the top of the chain and the bottom of the chain.

WHY ARE SIMULATIONS LIKE THIS HELPFUL?
Simulations like this are helpful because like I answered in the previous question it helps us understand better and memorize the theory of natural selection

Today’s simulation was very fun and also educational. I have learned much more about natural selection.

What is natural selection?

Natural selection, to be short, is the survival of the fittest. The strong and cooperative ones go on and survive while the weak ones don't.

Why did some species survive and the others die?

I think that some species survived because they were well adapted to hunt food and survive more easily while the others had trouble and were lacking to live. For example, the chopsticks group. It was hard for the chopsticks to adapt as the chopstick could only hold one B E A N at a time while the fork, knives, and the spoons team could easily get 3 or more B E A N S at one scoop.

What happened to the chopsticks and why?

The chopsticks had died out in the first generation as it was hard for them to pick up multiple B E A N S at one scoop so they were removed from the circle.

Which was the most successful and why?

The knives group was very successful and I'm surprised as I thought the spoons would win. I think that the knives won because the knives have a bigger surface to hold more B E A N S that spoons, forks, or chopsticks. They're also really flat so it's easy to scoop up the B E A N S.

How do simulations help us better understand what is happening in the world around us?

I think that the simulations would help us understand better than imagining what's going on in our heads because we kinda get the feel and be in the position of the top or the bottom species of the food chain.

Why are simulations like these are helpful?

Simulations like these are helpful as we get to experience what some species experienced and understand the concept of natural selection.

P.S. the activity today was fun (because I was one of the top B E A N collectors (97 was my top)) so thanks for doing this for us, Mr. Fisher!

today we learned about natural selection and we made a simulation about it 1 generation the chopsticks died or went extinct and than it was down with the forks spoon and knife for the first generation i died somehow even though i was a fork but than later i got abducted by the spoons and than i survived for the 2nd and 3rd round but something about the simulation that could make it improve is that we can have little changes over time like us we were apes back than.now look at us just in a few million year we are apes with no hair and we are more successful than ever we have technology.

Emma

Today we did something about natural selection. We did this activity with beans. I like this activity very much.

Some species die because they can’t pick up more beans. If you want to survive you need to pick up more beans.

Chopsticks were extinct in the first round. This is because chopsticks can only be picked up one at a time. Then you’ll be busy.

Knives is the most successful species. They had the most survivors in the last round. They have 10 people left. The knives will pick up the beans well.

The simulation will help me to understand what is natural selection. And it will

Ruby

Today in science, we did an experiment with beans and different eating utensils. We had to scoop beans up and off the table and into our hand. If we have below the average of beans we're supposed to get, then we will "die" and either we then get taken as offspring back into the game or they stay dead.

Why did some species survive and others die?
The reason why some of us died and some survived was because some species had the traits they needed to adapt to the environment so they survived.

What happened to the chopsticks? Why?
The chopsticks' species died out in the first round because they couldn't get enough food (beans) to feed themselves with their appendages.

Which was the most successful and why?
The knives were the most successful as they had strategy and their appendages were most adapted to the environment.

How do simulations help us better understand what is happening in the world around us?
I think that simulations help us through how you can see the example and actually experience what it would be like for others. As we are one of the animals at the top of the food chain, we always not really know how it feels to be lower.

Why are simulations like this helpful?
They are helpful by how you can actually see for yourself what happens (in this case) in natural selection and be able to understand it better.

In the afternoon, we were introduced to our new science unit, Natural Selection. Natural is the process where organisms tend to survive and produce more offspring if they are more adapted to their environment than others.

The class simulated natural selection using different utensils to pick up beans. We were given knives, spoons, forks, and chopsticks. Each time, we would scatter ourselves around the tables and we would pick up as many beans as we could until Mr. Fisher said stop.

Some species died out because their utensil wasn’t fit for picking up beans.

At first, I thought that chopsticks would win, but they died out in the first generation. This might be due to the amount that they can pick up at one time. Using chopsticks, it is hard to get a few with one snatch, but with the other utensils, a few beans could be scooped at one time.

The knives were the most successful. This was because knives are very long and have a lot of room to put the beans on. We also used the table cracks to scoop up the beans.

These simulations help us in the real world and explains some things when we notice animals becoming extinct or such. We are more considerate of this so we can also help animals in need.

This was a very fun activity to test out Natural Selection. I enjoyed very much.

Natural selection is natural selection

kb
1/22/2020 05:20:18 pm

Yesterday afternoon, Mr. Fisher introduced us to our new science project, called the "Natural Selection". The process whereby organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and produce more offspring. The theory of its action was first fully expounded by Charles Darwin and is now believed to be the main process that brings about evolution. Compare with survival of the fittest. We were split into 4 groups. Forks, Spoons, Knives, and Chopsticks. On the tables there were beans! You have to pick up the beans with those utensils. After sorting out the groups we would pick up as many beans as we could! Until Mr. Fishers says stop. When Mr. Fisher says stop, you have to count all the beans you have picked up from the table. When your done counting it and have told Mr. Fisher your total amount of beans then he will add it all together! including everyone else's. When the calculations are done, Mr. Fisher have to divide the numbers! If you got less than the expected amount of beans, then you will be out! Just like species going extinct. Right now chopsticks had gone extinct, forks will SOON be extinct, spoons are surviving just fine, knives are surviving pretty great! There are only about 10 more knives, and about 7 more spoons, about 2 more forks.

What a fun way of learning! I love doing this! I really enjoyed it.

We did a little simulation to recreate natural selection, we would split into 4 groups, each group getting a different tool, either spoon, forks, knifes, or chopsticks, what we would do is see which tool could collect the most beans using said tool, this would simulate which tools would survive or die, ex. my tool, chopsticks, died out on the first section of it, but spoons did the best, and after time, in theory, spoons would eventually evolve to be the strongest dominate species

In the ecosystems there are alot of didfrent types of animals. Some of them adapt to the envirement faster then the others which makes them eazyer to survive. If there was 5 bugs, 3 of them are green, and 2 of them are black. THe bird is eazyer to find the black bugs then the green, so the green ones will live longer than the black ones, and have a lot more chance to live. BEcause of that they will live and reproduce more green bugs ehen the black bugs can only wait to die.

The chopsticks die very quickly today because they didn't have the skills for them so adapt and survive in the envirment which makes them the prey. The others all have skills to live and catch the beens so they could live longer and better.

THe knifes was the most succeiseful obisely not because they used the crack to catch 10 at the same time, and they repoduce more kids and got their family bigger and bigger.

The simulation teaches us the way that they live and the didfrent betwen the prey and the predators. Because of that, I learn that who eer have better skills to survive and get food rules the word when the others have to wait and die.

The simulation like this was not really helpful after all because in the facts that there are still a lot of problems with the simulation that needs to be fixed. If we fix that it will be a great thing to teach and learn.
