4/17/2018

Picture
We had out third book club meeting and it was very happy to see that most groups were following the criteria we created for a successful book club meeting. We also worked on or raps which are due in draft form by Friday. In math we continued practicing creating expressions that match increasing linear patterns. Tomorrow we will start solving 1 and 2 step equations. The afternoon was spent filmmaking. Some groups are finished filming and are adding sound and voices overs to their films.
ATTENTION: There seems to be some error on the website today and several people cannot post, including me. I'm not sure what is going on, but don't worry about it if you can not post today. You can do this par tomorrow. Hopefully it will be fixed:)

1) Reminders & Homework:
  • Math Focus: Page 387 - Page 388
  • RAP: Written part due Friday
  • BRING IN THE GRADE 7 CELEBRATION $$$$$$
2) Post A Response:
  • Answer the following questions in full sentences:

#1  In the novel Touching Spirit Bear Cole is told that there are no spirit bears on the  island where he was. People question whether Cole was telling the truth.  After Cole finds the white hair in his pocket. Cole then throws the hair in the ocean. Explain why he does this? What does this action signify?

#2  Edwin says, " A person is never done with being mad. Anger is a memory never forgotten. You only tame it." Explain what he means by this.

#1: In general, if someone tells you something, you would assume that they are telling the truth. Cole however, has lied so much to so many different people, that most people will assume that he is lying. After contemplating while on the island, he has come to understand that his actions were wrong, and decides that from then on, if people don't want to believe his words, he has no reason to try to prove that he isn't lying. This signifies a huge change in Cole's perspective towards life.

#2: One of the reasons Cole is so violent is that he is angry. Angry at his dad for beating him, at his mom for not caring, at all the people around him who aren't scared of him. This anger is something that Cole will never forget, but can only do his best to control, and to learn from his mistakes.

#1 The action is kind of like a gesture. To me, had not the spirit bear attacked Cole, he would have never lain there wounded, thinking in a new perspective of the world. He would still be reckless, stubborn, full of hatred and selfish. He would never have seen the dead baby robins in such a helpless state, wondering why their bodies were shaped like that, even in death. He would've never realized how doing the right things are so much better. Honestly, if the bear wasn't standing by the water, Cole would've been escaped already. Sometimes there are things in unusual situations that happens to help you to fix mistakes. Sometimes you're so stubborn you just need to get mauled by a bear.

#2 Anger is in us, it is part of us, we are never done being mad because anger never leaves. Sure, there are monks in this world who are always calm, meditating and wise; if driven to insanity, they will act angry. They have only tamed their anger. We are born with anger. Sometimes it's good to be angry, but most of the time, it's best to leave it alone. I think Edwin means that, sure even though someone has been taught a lesson, he fix his way of doing things the right way, you're aways going to make mistakes, nothing is perfect and nothing goes right exactly.

#1 Cole threw out the white bear hair that he had into the lake made him realize how much life is and to experience the amount of pain that the people he punched was in. It made him realize how important his life was and made him stop with his selfish things. if this thing had never happened I believe once Cole goes back, he will be the same old one. Since this accident happened, I believe that he will finally change.

#2 Anger is something that no one can stop the only way we can stop it is by calming down and self regulating but when things happen continuously over a childhood, its really hard to stop. I believe that Edwin is trying to say the only way that we can tame it, is by doing stuff right that you wont regret when you die.

#1
Before Coal always proved stuff to people so that he could be trusted and as he said in the book his life was made up of lies. Now that he wants to live so badly even when he could’ve died to the bear attack, he doesn’t reallly care if anyone believes him that he saw a spirit bear and that’s why he threw the only proof that he saw one into the ocean. He was fed up with telling lies all the time.

#2
Anger is soemething that you can control. When you get mad you make yourself upset and possibly make other people upset. Even if you might not remember it the person you made upset will. This phrase that Edwin said is possibly saying that no one is perfect but who have choices over your actions.

#1
Coal before would always attack things that were afraid by him. This is caused by his family’s abuse toward him. As this result he thought the spirt bear was not afraid of him so he acted. He started to attack the bear, but mostly injuring himself. As he laid there bloody he realize that there is suck much more to living and he finally knows that he doesn’t want to die. In life there are problems that can be fix. As in the story cole he realizes this after he was attacked by the bear.

#2
Everyone has anger. Even the people that seems to be positive everyday. It’s like your taxes. Even though you don’t want to face it, you still have to face the problem. (Might be a bad example) Sometimes anger is there and sometimes it isn’t. Even if you don’t relize it. Anger is everywhere.

#1: To me, if the spirit bear had not attacked Cole, he wouldn’t have been staring at the sky wounded, and he wouldn’t have thought of the world in a new perspective in his "matured mind" and of his actions towards other people, especially Peter. I guess its kind of a life saving deed that the spirit bear did, because it taught Cole a lesson. He would have never seen the dead baby robins just wanting food so they could live. He would have never thought that doing kind deeds for people was so much more helpful AND obviously more calm and gentle towards them. If this had never happened to him and he still thought he was the best and he was the only person who could intimidate people, he would still be on the island, trashing it even more than before to display his anger to the other wandering creatures standing nearby.

#2 Anger is a feeling and it is part of us. You will never be able to forget about it or get rid of it completely. You can only battle it and control it so it won't get beyond your limits. One of the reasons why Cole is so angry is because he has had a lot of hard experiences before he went to the island: his dad beat him bloody, his mom would never protect him because she was always drunk, and for everybody around him for not backing down or being scared of him, even though they knew what strength his body held. All those incidents led up to him beating Peter and attempting to kill the spirit bear.

#1 I think the action signifies that he is done with trying to prove that he's right and that he's innocent. Instead he's basically saying that if you don't want to believe me then don't because I am telling the truth. I think that's sort of like believing in yourself, that you won't lie anymore and by throwing away proof he's further strengthening the belief.

#2 I think he means that you will always get mad no matter what but what's important is to control and learn from the experience. Control being the "tame" part and learn from the experience being the "remember" part.

Mr Fisher the PAR wasn't working earlier!!!

1) I think this action symbolizes him accepting that his words are enough proof that he is right. If he isn't believed, then he will accept that instead of retaliating. I think this is a pivotal moment in Cole's new and reformed outlook on life.

2) I think Edwin means that those scars from years of Cole's abuse will always be there and he will always be hurt and angry at his parents for what they did to him, but he needs to learn to control it instead of lashing out.

1) after Cole lay there after the bear attacked him, his thoughts clouded his mind, he wanted to live after seeing those baby robins dying a slow painful death they couldn't help but suffer. He thought that might happen to him too. It made him determined to live. Throwing out that hair showed that he has matured and changed into a different person with a different perspective in life. Since he always lied, people can choose whether to believe it or not but in his mind he knows that he's being truthful. He was always full of hatred but after being on that island, he saw how important life was.

2) anger is apart of us. Yes, you can totally go ballistic and get raged but you can control it. Before cole went into the island, he couldn't control it at all. Now after the island I think that Cole has learned how to tame his anger after going after the bear and his consequences.

#1
For example if you would say something, people would say that you were telling the truth. In this case they are hesitant towards trusting him because he had lied to so many people before hand. What I think his action ment was if he wasn't believed then he wasn't believed, but deep down in his heart he knew that he was telling the truth and that it was what mattered to him truly.

#2
Anger will stay with us forever. It's something to be never forgotten or left behind we all have learned to calm down during the periods of our feelings including anger (expect Cole) I guess Cole may never forgot what his father did to him which made him a more violent person.

Tasia

1. Before Cole went to the island, he was filled with hate and anger at the world. In his perspective, he was always right. The centre of his world. He was always trying to prove that he was right and everyone else was wrong. I think that he got fed up with always being mad at the world. Being mad takes away all of the joy that he could experience instead. Now Cole is thinking that the truth is enough. He doesn't have to be mad and lie to get by. The truth is all he needs. If other people don't want to believe him, that is their decision. He knows what he saw.

2. Anger is something that you can control. If there is something that makes you mad or upset, it probably isn't going to just disappear magically. Even if it can't change on it's own (like Cole's family), you can change your view of things. Cole can't forget all of the things that made him angry, but he can try to approach things with a different mind set and control his actions. You can control your own... but not other's.

#1 Cole (the main character) has many issues. One of them having a history of lying to many people. When the spirit bear attack Cole he lay in a hopeless bloody heap thinking about life and how he had wasted. He also thought about what he did and how it effected people around him and himself. After seeing the hopeless and dead swallows he decided he wanted to live another day and fix all he has done. I think the reason why he through away the evidence of the spirit bear is that since he wants to change and have people actually trust him by his word. If people don't trust him, he has no reason to prove he is telling the truth because its their loss.

#2 Cole has been angry his whole life taking it on people like Peter and blaming others. This anger was caused by his parents for not for him and not treating him well and has brought him to his position near jail and on that island. What Garvey was trying to say was you can never get rid of anger but you can control it.

Aden

1) before Cole threw the white fur away into the water he said he wouldn't lie anymore because he wants to live instead of dying from the spirit bear again.

2) the reason that Cole is so angry is because that his dad used to beat him up everytime he did something bad so don't try to kill someone like peter or else you will get banished because when cole came back he learned a leason after that

Daniel

#1. Cole has as many issues as the amount of crimes he has caused(probably) and one of the many is him lying to get his way or to help to pretend his point is true, or to eventually manipulate people into thinking he’s innocent. After he was told that he was wrong and that there are no spirit bears on the island he was going to provide evidence but decided not to. When they left he checked his pocket for the white fur he got from the bear earlier he actually wasn’t lying and was telling the truth because he did have the spirit bears fur. And after a life of trying to get people to believe him he threw it away. I think it was because his lire’s hurt others and even himself because he told the circle that he did want to change which almost got himself killed. So now he has decided that his only proof is going to be his words because he vowed never to lie again. It has signified that he has changed and turned over a new leaf and changed mentally and physically because his lies harm people so he stopped.

#2. Cole will never forgive and forget those who angered him so he will never completely forget his anger, he can only try to contain it. Because whenever he doesn’t he becomes like the Hulk and destroys things and people like Peter. This is just his awful way of expressing and releasing his anger. His anger has built up from his countless beatings and his mother who did nothing to stop it.

For the first one I think Cole threw the hair away because the reason we proved was because he needed it to prove to himself and others that he was telling the truth because of how much he lied. So he threw it away to say that he is always going to try to tell the truth. I think it means he is a changed person, that like puberty of your appearances, but mentally and his soul.

I'm thinking the second one means that there will be another point in his life that he will get angry, so that day can always come and it's never forgotten, but if you use strategies to control your anger, you can tame it (not with fish, don't use fish). With strategies.

#1 Cole wants to change himself so he decides to not lie ever again. So throwing the fur represents that he is telling the truth and he is going to change to someone who will never lie again.

#2 Edwin means that anger is a feeling and although you might feel like you've already lost it, but it's always there.

Cooper
4/18/2018 04:23:08 pm

#1 Cole throwing out the white fur is representing Cole and the truth. Before, Cole told many lies and always needed to prove everything to everyone which he was going to use the fur for. Now, he wants to change. He doesn't need to prove anything to anyone and he will always tell the truth.

#2 Anger is a feeling. You can keep your temper by "taming" it, but you can't actually get rid of anger. It will always be somewhere inside of you.
