Laurier students were lucky to have One Woman Circus here today. Students were challenged to concentrate and focus on several difficult tasks including juggling scarves, balls and sticks, spinning plates and balancing feathers. Throughout the lesson students received continuous DESCRIPTIVE FEEDBACK to help them improve. The big 6 principle of leaning will help get better at everything you do! Thank you to our amazing instructor Sand:)

Dear Sand,

I thought the circus skills lesson was great overall, and it was very fun. I thought all the skills were pretty hard, but balancing the feather was easier. That's where I found myself successful, also the basics on the plate spinning were, too. I thought the juggling was difficult. I didn't give up, though it did get very frustrating sometimes. But overall it was very fun, and I would like to do it again to get better. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Colin

Dear Sand

The overall experience was quite nice. I enjoyed almost everything you had taught us, but if I had to choose one activity that we have done I would of chose the feather balancing. As it was simple, it didn't require a mountain of concentration to be able to do it. When things were challenging it was actually quite fun, as I could slowly see myself getting better and better, but when I could finally do it I had a satisfying feel in me. Even if I couldn't do everything you taught us I wouldn't give up until I felt like I tried my best and still couldn't accomplish what was taught. In the end like I said the overall experience was great. My overall opinion of circus performers hasn't changed much to be honest. If I could in the future I would like to continue working on the skills learned today and thank you.

Dear Sand,

I think the overall experience was good. I had a great time learning all the circus skills that you had taught us. The most difficult skill is to juggle three ball at a time. The most easy skill is the feather balancing thing. I was able to do the feather thing and i did enjoyed. Even if it was difficult to learn i wouldn't give up because i want to learn. My overall opinion of circus performers hasn't changed much. I would like to keep working on juggling because i like it. Today i had a lot of fun. Thank You!

Sincerely,

Edmond

Dear Sand,

The activity I enjoyed the most was juggling because it was easy and it was good practice and preparation for juggling with the balls.

The most difficult activity for me was the, plate rolling on the stick because you had to have the stick completely straight and perfect balance which I couldn't figure out to well with the time I had. I didn't like it that much because of the difficulty but a good challenge is fun most of the time.

Succeeding felt good because it gives you motivation and confidence to keep going at whatever your doing. When I was not successful I felt discouraged from the activity.

I didn't give up but to be honest for a few moments I wanted too because I kept failing and I wasn't really passionate about some of the activities.

I had a bit of fun because its nice to try new things once in a while.

I'd say my opinion on circus performers hasn't changed because I've always imagined the skills being a grueling challenge. It takes a lot of dedication to master these things which is what I've always thought.

I wouldn't mind to keep working on some of these skills.

Thanks for teaching us some of these skills.
Sincerely, Koby.

Dear Sand!

So... today you taught us how to do some really awesome circus activities!

One thing that I really liked, was the juggling with balls. We had a lot of practice, and it was really fun

One thing I felt I did good in, was the juggling with the three balls. And with the balancing of the feather. I like using for further, because it was a way of meditation for me. It calmed my mind down after having basketball practice.

One thing I felt I could do better in, was the plate spinning. I got the hang of it at the end, but at the beginning it was quite tricky!

I didn’t give up, even when it was hard! I was motivated to keep practicing. Because it was really fun! And I really like doing these kinds of things.

Overall, I am really excited to do another circus session tomorrow! Thank you so much sand for teaching me how to do a bunch of amazing things!

Sincerely, Mireya

Dear Sand,

Thank you for coming and teaching us those really fun activities! I had so much fun! I really enjoyed learning how to use the Fluoro sticks! It's pretty challenging but it's so much fun!

Fluoro sticks was really challenging! Catching and balancing them on two sticks was so hard! I really want to learn more tricks with the fluoro sticks! When I find something that I'm good at I feel so proud of myself! But, of course there are some things that I'm not good at! like balancing the feather on my shoes. Every time I don't catch it I feel a little bit upset, but I still keep on trying! I really want to learn new things so....of course I'm not giving up! I would never let myself give up.

I thought that circus activities would be really boring, but when I had my first class learning some activities it was actually pretty fun! That had changed my opinion about circus activities! I'm really looking forward for tomorrows circus class! Thank you for teaching us some cool tricks! see you again tomorrow!

Sincerely,

Krystelle

Dear Sand,
Today we had the privilege of learning some cool circus tricks from you. I really REALLY enjoyed spinning plates because it was cool how you don't need much momentum to get it to spin. Once I got the hang of spinning the plate, it started to become easier and easier. I also liked how you gave everyone compliments and descriptive feedback on how to improve. I think I can work on juggling because sometimes I forgot which scarf needed to be thrown and which ones needed to be caught. Since most things were new to me, it was challenging but fun. I like to be challenged because it makes me better at something because I push myself to get better at it. When I balanced the feather well, I got a compliment and I felt good about that because I was getting noticed for doing something right. When I wasn't successful, I tried again and again until I could do it. Never quit something when you've already put some of the work in! I am SUPER EXCITED to demonstrate some of the skills to the younger kids tomorrow!

Thank you Sand!

Sincerely,
Emily (K)

Dear Sand

We studied circus this afternoon. It was very interesting. I learned a lot. The activity I enjoyed the most is juggling sticks. My friend and I were juggling with sticks. We can basically do some simple things, we throw and catch sticks. I find that feather difficult to balance. But you will be happy when you succeed. When I don’t succeed, I want to keep practicing. I’m looking forward to practicing tomorrow and I want to practice something different .

Sincerely,

Emma

Dear Sand,

I had so much fun today doing the circus workshop with you. Thank you for teaching me all these circus skills.

The best part was getting to try all of the circus activities because then I could see which one I liked or which one was my specialty.
There was not a most difficult or easy thing to do because it was all equally hard and easy but my favourite part was the plate spinning with the stick.
I liked that the activities were hard because I always enjoy challenges no matter how hard they are I figure out a way to solve them.
I feel really proud and happy when I am successful and I feel like I have accomplished something.
When things aren’t successful I feel kind of sad that it doesn’t work but I also feel more motivated to do better the next time.
I wouldn’t give up at any point because these challenges train your brain and these things can get easier once you figure it out.
I had lots of fun with the workshop today and I am excited for tomorrow’s workshop.
My opinion of circus hasn’t really changed because with my background knowledge I already knew that circus is really fun as well as needing lots of concentration to be able to do the acrobatics and tricks.
I would want to continue working on these skills one by one and get pretty good at them all or at least most of them.

Once again I would like to thank you for your time and patience with my class and I and I am super excited for our next workshop tomorrow!

Sincerely, Sabrina

Dear Sand,

Thank you so much for coming to our school and teaching us many different activities. I found a lot of these activities really difficult but it was fun learning all of them from you.

One of these activities that I found really difficult was to balance a feather on my arm. When I was doing this, I felt really frustrated because I wasn't able to do it but when I was able to do it, I felt really happy and proud to have acquired new skills.

Out of all of the wonderful activities that you had showed us, I personally liked the Fluoro sticks which I passed back and forth between my partner. I found this activity easier than the feather but it started to get much more challenging when I tried to do the harder tricks. Even so, I really liked doing this and I didn't give up due to the fact that I wanted to finish perfecting it first.

My opinion on circus performers has changed since I didn't think of them too much before and I felt rather reluctant to try to perform but now I think that they are really interesting and that doing circus activities is actually fun. I would like to keep working on some of these skills. I was nervous when I first heard that we would have to show what we learned in front of the younger students but I am pretty excited now that you have taught us how to do these activities.

Thank you again for teaching us Sand!

Sincerely,

Claire

Dear Sand, January 30, 2020

This circus experience was really enjoyable! I enjoyed doing and learning about everything today! One of the things I especially liked was doing the juggling with scarves. Juggling with scarves was much easier than juggling with balls so I chose the scarves to start with. After some more practicing I was able to get the hang of it and juggle with three scarves. A feeling of satisfaction came over me with this accomplishment. During our time today, I tried three things but I found juggling the easiest. Twirling the plate on the stick was what I found most difficult as I could twirl it but couldn't figure out how to get the stick to the middle of the plate. Frustration came over me when I was still unable to do it. Although, I was not discouraged by this and did not give up and ended up trying to twirl the plate on the stick (and failing) until the end of our session. My opinion of circus performers hasn't changed much as I still consider them amazing and skillful people. I would still like to keep on working on everything and thank you for teaching us these skills!

Sincerely,
Ruby

Dear Sand,

I really enjoyed learning all these cool circus techniques. I really liked trying to spin a plate because I've never tried that before. It was an amazing experience. I liked how most of the tricks were difficult because I'm always up for a new challenge! I felt quite happy when I was successful because I didn't think I would've been successful. When I wasn't doing so great I felt like trying harder until I could accomplish what I wanted to do. I didn't give up because I was enjoying it so I wanted to try to be able to do the tricks. Ever since I've been to a circus, I've thought the performers were really talented and skilled so my thoughts about the performers haven't changed. I would be delighted to keep on working on these skills to master them! This was a wonderful new experience so I would like to thank you a lot. Thank you so much!

Sincerely,
Jack

Dear Sand,

I absolutely loved today's lesson on circus skills.

I really enjoyed spinning the plate because it was simple to learn and I could catch up quickly. I was able to spin the plate on the wooden stick successfully. It was not so hard to get a lot of energy and momentum to help the plates spin. Something that was difficult for me was balancing the feather without having much movement with my body. I was able to balance the feather, but in order to do that, I had to move quite a bit. I hope tomorrow I can successfully balance a feather on my hand, or even nose! I felt wonderful when I did something because many circus performers out there practice hours and hours before a show, and I had just begun. When I was less successful, I tried again and again until I was at least doing the right techniques. When this happened, I felt determined to get it right. I kept on trying and didn’t give up. I had so much fun experimenting with the different circus materials and I definitely think I learned something today. Circus performers are trained specialists at circus. They know exactly what they are doing when they are doing it. After having the amazing opportunity to try circus out, I have realized how much training must be done in order to get a great performance. They must also be super focused, especially with lights and cameras in the audience, the performers would be extremely attentive. I would love to continue and learn some new skills tomorrow. I didn’t get to try juggling the sticks, so I am looking forward to doing it tomorrow.

Thank you so much Sand! Thank you for giving me a great opportunity to learn something that I have never laid a finger on before! Thank you again! :D

Sincerely,
Emily 😁

Dear Sand,
I had lots of fun today and learned how to do many new things.
Before class, I thought that circus was more about flexibility and athleticism. After the class I learned that there are all sorts of different things in circus.

Some parts I liked the best were, doing the skills and watching you do the skills because it was entertaining to watch.

I think the most difficult thing for me, was spinning the plate on the stick. Once I got the stick in the middle it was easy but restarting took some time. When it was difficult it was more fun because it felt like a challenge.
It felt good when I was successful because I felt like I learned something.

Overall I had fun and learned new skills, thank you for teaching us. :)

Sincerely, Ariel

today I learned some fun skills and tricks related to circus activity, such as a bit of juggling, or plate spinning. I think ill work more on juggling with the balls. And maybe i can be proficient in juggling. Or maybe be good with stick juggling.

To: Sand, our circus instructor.

Yesterday, I learned a lot of things about concentration and practice. It took me quite some time to get the peacock feather balancing right (I didn't really do it but okay.) The best experience I had yesterday was the plate spinning. Hah, that was real fun! Today, for the demo, I'm going to try to do some tricks with the plate because that's what I feel the most comfortable with.

Thank you for teaching us these tricks, they are more than just circus skills :p
