WELCOME TO MR FISHER'S CLASS

Powerful Response Writing: Whole Class Focus

5/22/2018

We spent the morning working on our final powerful responses. In the lesson I covered several things we need to focus on as a class to improve our writing.

1. Try a new introduction other than a question 2. Group main ideas into separate paragraphs if there are two main ideas
3. Use a one or two paragraphs for reading strategies and deeper thinking
4. Thinking and learning questions need to have explanations that show how others deepened or changed your thinking. Just a quote forma classmate is not enough.

Tomorrow we will continue to peer asses each others  work and will provide feedback to help improve our writing!
1) Reminders & Homework:
  • Powerful response draft only due tomorrow (not gift of words or questions)
  • 2 pages of solving equations         level 1  -  level 2   -   level 3
2) Post A Response:
  • In the short story today Mr. White held the monkey paw and  wished for 200 pounds to pay off his house and then he thought he felt the monkey paw squirm like a snake.
  • Do you think the paw really moved?
  • Do you think his wish will come true?
  • If so what do you think he will get?

I think the paw moved, in stories like these, only the "wielder" can feel/see something happening. The other characters usually say something along the lines of "it must be your imagination."

I think his wish will come true, but not in the way he wanted to happen. It kind of reminds me of a book where a character meets a genie in real life and he wished for whatever he wanted, but you have to be extremely specific as possible, but there's still a high chance of making a mistake.

I think Mr.White or one of his family members might gain 200 pounds as in weight. Or he might get 200 pounds of something else.

Sorry about this, but I missed most of the story as well, so I'm not really sure if I can answer this properly without context....

I think that the paw probably did move. Most people don't just imagine things like that and I'm not really sure why he would be joking around or something. As for the wish coming true, why not? Sergeant Major said that it worked for him, so it could for Mr. White as well right? I noticed that a lot of people think that he might get 200 pounds of weight. I think that's a pretty valid point, he wasn't very clear about his wish...

I think the paw didn't move, because sometimes you imagine things in your mind that you thought happend but they didn't and I think that is what happened to Mr. White. As for the wish coming true I think it will come true because it worked for the Sergeant Major, So It will probably worked for Mr. White.

I'm not really sure how the story goes since I was helping Ms. Golby with things but I can infer that he may have seen the paw move because your imagination can go wild sometimes but I think it could have also been an illusion or he saw it out of the corner of his eye. I think that he may get his wish if he works really hard to prove that he can be helpful, but at the same time I feel that if he is lazy or unhelpful, he won't get his wish. If he does work hard and does get the wish, I think he'll get it in chunks just in case he doesn't keep up his helpful attitude. He may also gain 200 pounds of weight as well as his money because his wish wasn't very specific.

After reading:

I think the paw moved because sometimes only the person doing or having something can see things related to that subject. Of course the other characters may not think it was true because they may not have witnessed it, and they always think that person is crazy or they say its just your imagination.

I personally think he will get his wish, but since he was not very specific with which weight he wanted, he may get both body weight and money. There could also be some sort of conflict or some magic side effects to the spell because it may not be perfect, strong "magic".

Lawrence

I believe it has happened as only one of the characters (the wilder) can see the future of what's happening. If I was the other I would need some kind of visualizing skill in order to see it.

David

After reading, I think the paw did move, but only the person using the talisman would be able to experience something, because the talisman's charms would and should be centered around the person who used it. The others are right to be suspicious; after all, the world of magic and fate was, and is, still questionable. Something like the paw twitching to human eyes seems very unlikely to happen, and so, of course, we dispute these claims with suggestions of our own, often stating that the person must have been delusional.

Personally, I think Mr. White will receive his wish, but won't get exactly what he had hoped for. As he was not necessarily the most specific with his wish, he might receive something else with the word "pound" in it. Remember the epigraph at the beginning, stating you had to be careful for what wished for, as it may come true? An epigraph is supposed to show the theme of a book, so this is probably foreshadowing of the plot later in the book. I think he may receive 200 pounds in weight, or something else.

Matt

I think the paw didn't move, but since Mr. white believed the story, he imagined it move in his mind.
I think his wish will come true, but not when he wanted it too.
I also think the wish might have a different meaning like 500 pounds in weight or 500 pounds (punches)

Veer
5/22/2018 07:39:09 pm

i dont think it really moved because on the
outside he thought it was a joke but no the
inside he wanted it to come true so he thought
something happend to the paw
(he thinking tha is shook)
showing him an sign that his wish came true
(i know that that this is a really lame
explnation, but idk wht elce to write)

i think his wish came true but in the
rest of the story and then he wishes for
more things and everything goes wrong...
then he burns the paw

so he will get the money then as i said,
he will go crazy and use all his wishes
and everthing will go wrong

Veer
5/22/2018 07:44:58 pm

im going to piggy back on matt

i think he will get 200 pounds of something elce like a weight of 200 pounds of something other then what he meant

Veer
5/22/2018 07:57:19 pm

im going to piggy back on matt

for Q #3 i think that he will get 200 pounds of something elce that he dosent want

Kaya
5/22/2018 08:12:58 pm

I think that the paw actually did move because it's a story and if it didn't actually move that would be very anticlimactic. I think that he might get 200 pounds as in weight, so he'll wake up in the morning being really really fat. I don't really know haha

Tasia

After reading Part One of the short story, I believed that the paw did move but only the wielder can feel it while he wishes. Most likely the others don't believe it because I have a feeling that they don't believe in the magic. Another thing is that he may have got his wish but not as he wanted to. I also feel there will be a price/punishment/consequence for the wish.

Aaron
5/22/2018 08:16:59 pm

I think the paw moved and I also think his wish will come true because it's a horror story. I think he will get the 200 pounds but with some sort of consequence because the sergeant said that he made his wishes and they came true but it brought him sadness and stuff.

I think I think the paw didn’t move and that he is just trolling them. But because it’s a horror story his wish will provide him with 2 000 pounds but in weight and he will die of obesity due to an enormous amount of excessive fat clogging his circulation so he will die.

I think the law didn’t move because I think the guy was just faking that it moved. I think his wish came true but in a different form. Instead of getting 200 pounds he will gain 200 pounds.

Andrew
5/23/2018 08:30:23 am

I think the paw didn’t move because I think the people in the story are just lying to them. I think that the wish of 200 pounds might come true. I think this because this story is a horror movie.
