1.27+ 1.16= 2.43 7+6=13, carry the ten to 2, 3+1+4 1+1=2 so 2.43 is the answer.

5.64 - 1.36 =4.28 take 1 away from 6 and carry it to 4 leaving 5 and 14, 14-6=8, 5-3=2, 5-1=4. So 4.28 is the answer.

Regrouping is when you subtract the digit on the left, and add 10 to the digit. This way could be used in adding, and subtracting. In adding, you will need to do the opposite. If there is a digit above 9, then subtract ten and add one digit to the left. Two examples are:

1.27+ 1.16= ? Get 2.313, regroup the 13, so the answer is 2.43.

5.64 - 1.36 = ? Change the 4 in 5.64 into 14, subtract 1 from the 6, then subtract. The answer is 4.28.

ADDING: When you add the first digit (closest to right) but you have more then ten, you add them up (10+4=14) and you take the last digit (4) and put it on the bottom area where the answer goes. With the extra one, you put it on top of the next couple digits. Repeat with all digits.
SUBTRACTING: If the number you're subtracting with is larger then the number being subtracted, you cross out the next digit over (to your left). Then, you add 10 to the number and re-subtract. This must work because the number subtracting has to be smaller then ten. If the number over has 0, you take one from the next over, add it to the zero, take one off of the zero that is now ten (now you have 9) and add ten to the original number. Repeat.

1.27+1.16= (start with hundredths digit) add 6+7=13, take the three and carry the one for the next number. Add 2+1 PLUS the extra one from the other number. You should have 43 hundredths so far. Now, you just add 1+1. So now you have 2.43.

5.64-1.36= (start with hundredths digit) 4-6 doesn't work so, I have to take one away from the next digit, 6 (turns into five). Now I have 14-6, which equals 8. Then, I subtract 3 from 5 so I get 2. Now I have 28 hundredths. Now all I need to do is subtract 1 from 5 which equals 4. So I have 4.28.

Regrouping when Adding and Subtracting with Decimals

Do you know how to regroup when you add and subtract? Well if you do then when you regroup while adding and subtracting with decimals it will be easy.

When adding we will use the example 1.27 + 1.16 = ???.
The first step is to add the hundredths. 6 + 7 = 13. So you put the 3 in the hundredths place and you regroup or carry the 1 to the next place value which is tenths. Next is 1 + 2 = 3 and then we add another 1 from the 13 so it would equal 4. Now put the decimal. Then add the next place value which is the ones place and 1 + 1 = 2. The answer to 1.27 + 1.16 = 2.43.

When subtracting we will use the example 5.64 - 1.36 = ???.
The first step is to subtract the hundredths. 4 - 6 = possible but not for this case. We need to regroup so you bring a tenth from the tenths place and you move it to the hundredths. The 6 from 5.64 becomes 5 and the tenth from that goes to the hundredths place so 4 becomes 14. Now you subtract the hundredths place. 14 - 6 = 8. So the hundredth place is 8. Next the tenth place value. 5 - 3 = 2. It’s 5 - 2 because we regrouped and we took 1 from 6. The tenth place value is 2. Now put the decimal. Then subtract the next place value which is the ones place and 5 - 1 = 4. The answer the 5.64 - 1.36 = 4.28.

This is how you regroup when adding and subtracting with decimals.

1.27 + 1.16 = 2.313 (2.43) , 7 + 6 = 13 regroup the 13. The answer will be 2.43

5.64 - 1.36 = 4.28 , take 1 away from 6 and bring it to 4. 14 -6 =8, 5
- 3 = 2, 5 - 1 = 4 . The answer will be 4.28

Regrouping in addition is when you subtract one digit and add ten to the right. When you are regrouping, you could use this method for both of the addition and subtraction.

1.27 + 1.16= 2.43 When you add, you start by adding the number closest to the right. 7 + 6 = 13. You bring the ten over to the tenths and you add 2 + 1 + 1 which is 4. You bring back the 3 which makes it into 43 hundredths. Then you add the ones and 43 hundredths which makes it into 2.43

5.64 - 1.36 = 4.28 You bring one tenth over to the hundredths from 64 which makes 5 tenths and 14 hundredths. 14 - 6 = 8. Then you minus 3 tenths from 5 tenths which becomes 2 tenths. 2 tenths + 8 hundredths equals to 28 hundredths. You minus the ones digit next which becomes 4. Then, you add the ones and the hundredths to make 4.28.

Regrouping is regrouping a number so you basically carry the 10. In subtraction you would add 10 but in addition you would subtract 10. (Doing the opposite)

1.27+ 1.16= 2.43

5.64 - 1.36 = 4.28

Emma

1.27 + 1.16= 2.43 7+6=13 regroup 13, 2+2=4, 1+1=2. The answer is 2.43.

5.64-1.36= 4.28 take one away from 6, bring it to 4. 14-6=8 5-3=2 5-1=4. The answer is 4.28.

Regrouping is when there is too much or there isn't enough. We need to regroup because if we don't, then we cannot subtract or add properly.

For the addition example: 1.27 + 1.16 = ___
Since in the hundredths place, it is basically 7 + 6, and 7 + 6 equals more than 10, you have to regroup. By doing that you add 7 and 6 which equals 13 and leave the 3 at the bottom at 7 and 6 and carry the 1 over to the tenths place to add it to the equation. In the tenths place, you have 2 +1 (which doesn't need regrouping because its answer is less than ten), and that equals 3. You still have the 1 from before so you add it to the 3 which is now a 4. After the regrouping part, all you have to do is do normal addition.

For the subtraction example: 5.64 - 1.36= ___. In the hundredths place, you have basically 4 - 6. You have to regroup for this one too because you can't subtract a bigger number from a smaller number without negatives. To do this, you have to take 1 tenth from the 6 tenths in 5.64 to regroup 4 to 14. Change the 6 to a 5 since you borrowed a tenth. You then subtract 6 from 14 and get 8. Now moving on, you just subtract as you usually do.

Emily H

Regrouping is moving a ten over to the following digit if the original number is greater than ten. If the sum in the ones place is 10 or over, the tens need to be regrouped and written as a digit in the tens place.

For example, if we have 1.27 + 1.16, this is an addition, so we will need to subtract 10. Right off the bat, we know that we will need to regroup. This is because 7+6 is larger than 10. If we just add the numbers without regrouping, it would be 2.3 and 13 over 10. Because 13 is greater than 10, we would take the 10 from 13 and add it to the 3. The answer would be 2.43.

For subtraction, we just do the opposite. Say we have 5.64-1.36. If we subtract the numbers, we would know that 4 cannot subtract 6. So, we would take a 1 from the 6 and add it to 4. Now the statement would be 5.64-1.36=4.28 The answer is 4.28.-6=8

For adding :1.27 + 1.16= 2.43 7+6=13 regroup 13, 2+2=4, 1+1=2. The answer is 2.43

Now, for subtraction: 5.64-1.36 = 4-6 which you have to regroup from the digit on the left which makes it 14-6 which is 8 which makes the 6 now a 5 so 5-3 = 3 so no regrouping is needed and 5-1 = 4 so the answer is 4.28

For the adding, 1.27+1.16 First we just need to look at the hundredths coleumn. 7+6=13, and the 13 is a two degit number so we need to put the 1 in to the tenths. now yojust add up all the numbers in the tenths and the ones and get the anwer which is 2.43.

For the minus, 5.64-1.36. look at the hundersths column. 4-6, there aren't enough so we need to borrow one from the tenths. so we have 14-6 which will bring us 8. now we add up all the tenths and hundredths and the ones. The anwer is 4.28.

5.64 - 1.36 = 4.28 You bring one tenth over to the hundredths from 64 which mak
