Today we had a busy day. We started doff with science observationS and then rolled into math. We learned and practiced adding and subtracting fractions. We briefly talked about ways to estimate sums and differences of fractions and will get into more of that more tomorrow.  After recess I modeled how to do self and peer writing assessment based on the powerful personal writing criteria and then students did a self assessment of one of their pieces. Following this, they focused on one area and made improvements to their piece. In the afternoon, we had a make up music period and carried on with or Christmas read aloud, Angel Square.
**Christmas concert tomorrow at 9:15m**

1) MATH:
  • MF p. 54-55 # 1-5
  • MF p. 58-59 # 1-6
2)POST A RESPONSE:
  • Do another piece for your Alphabiography and post it here.
  • Most of you need to do 1 piece a day to finish.
  • Use ideas form the list posted yesterday!
  • The piece does not have to be long, but it must have as much powerful writing criteria in it as possible.
  • Give another student some feedback
  • Edit and revise
  • IF YOU HAVE FINISHED, ALL YOU NEED TO DO IT SUPPORT YOU CLASS BY GIVING EXTRA FEEDBACK!

Building Our Ecosystem

The blue powder went every where in the air. The smell was terrible and it looked so disgusting.

A little while ago we started our Ecosystem project. Our Ecosystem has many parts to it. On one side we have a plant with large and strong leaves with a large pile of shredded leaves. On the other side of our Ecosystem there is some grass and our oranges. We got our orange was from the refrigerator in the staff room. It was very moldy and squishy when we got it. Now it is filled with mold and it turned blue and has tiny dots all over it now. We currently have 2 slugs and 4 worms and 1 unidentified species. Our 2 slugs hide in our plant, the worms have never come out of the soil, and our unidentified species usually scatters around the top. The unidentified species is silver and very very tiny. It has the shape of a slug instead the eyes are in its behind.

We have been collecting data for a long time. Some of our main observations are the weight of the organisms and oranges. Overall i we haven't found lots of organisms data but we have found enough.

In conclusion i cant wait to see what happens to our Ecosystem in the next little bit.

Nathan, I think you can add more to your first couple sentences. Another thing is that, I think you could've talked about how you obtained your items for your ecosystem too. Your conclusion seemed to short. I think you could say what your final thoughts about the whole project. Overall, I think you did a great job! Go Nathan! You can finish your Alphabiography!

Earth bites

Outside in the cold sunny weather, birds chirping joyously.

It was Wednesday and Mr.Fisher had just announced that we had earth bites. The hole class uproar with cheers of joy and excitement that we had earth bites. All the kids were split up into two groups the ones who would go outside first and the ones who would go outside second The kids who weren't outside would make tea inside. I was on the Inside before going outside. Everyone got into their groups Since I was inside I got to make tea first. I went with my friend Serin to the girls washroom to wash our hands then we went back to class and started making tea. The earth bits leader gave all the kids jobs to do, my job was to juice the lemon I juiced the lemon and then waited for the rest of the people to be done with their jobs. Once everyone was done their job the earth bites instructor boiled water and added the other ingredients Kaden passed out the cups for the tea and then the instructor gave us tea. The tea was grate, it was sweet and sower at the same time. It smelt like ginger and honey, It was delicious. After tea we went outside.

Outside we separated into groups and started planing things we could possibly plant in January. My group was Serin and Kheyria We found a lot of cool plants that we could plant in January and mad a plan for our class garden. After we planed for our class garden we were done earth bites for the day.

We went back inside and got ready for lunch. Overall earth bites is really fun.

Earth bites

Music was canceled because of Earth bites that morning. The class was split into 2 groups, I was inside making the food first. I was excited and was ready to eat food too. We were making tea! Well a special kind of tea that’s for your Immune system, it’s called “Immune-a-tea” get the pun? The instructor told us why it’s good for your body and how it increase and helps your Immune system. It was very interesting because I didn’t know what ginger can help the system.

We were each asked to wash our hands before making tea. Then we sat down and took turns putting the ingredients in the jar. Then we mixed everything up and gave it back to the instructor for the next step. She mixed everything up and the tea was ready to serve. She gave everyone a cup and poured the tea inside. The tea was amazing and very sweet. I drank the whole thing in one gulp. I wanted seconds because it was so good.

Then it was 11:30am and we went outside for the gardening. It was every cold outside so we all had to wear our coats. This time we were supposed to get into groups of 2 or 3 and plan out what plants we should plant next. My group choose 2 plants. A eggplant and a thick carrot. Then it was time to go back to class. Earth bites was fun, my favorite was obviously the tea. I’m sure everyone would say the same as me.

Germany layover

AND AS A NOTE TO EVERYONE DONT EAT MCDONALDS 9 TIMES ON A 11 DAY TRIP TO A COUNTRY YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN TO BEFORE AND HAVE NEVER TRIED THEIR FOOD!

It was the biggest airport I had ever seen, I thought I would lost. It was Frankfurt Airport! We had just got off our Lufthansa plane from Nurnberg and were doing and overnight layover in Frankfurt, so we could go back to Vancouver the next day. We headed to the our hotel which was the Sheraton, after we checked in to the hotel I went to McDonalds for the 9th time on the 11 day Germany trip. I felt like The Golden Arches was typical German food so I had ruined the Germany trip by eating McDonalds almost every day. After McDonalds I was still hungry for food so my mom asked me to eat some German food instead of McDonalds, because I was so dumb in grade 5 I refused and went to KFC for a chicken burger, and that is how I ate almost no German food in a 2 week trip to Germany.

The next morning was chaos! Our flight was at 9:30 in the morning but there is one thing we didn’t realize is that it was daylight savings and the clock went ahead an hour. "WHAT WE ARE GOING TO MISS THE FLIGHT"! Is what I kept saying to my parents after we raced through the airport. When we got to the gat we realized the flight was boarding in an hour. After all that panicking we realized daylight savings was a day later. We were so relieved but then we had to eat breakfast. I went to McDonalds again, this trip to Germany was so weird, 9 times at McDonalds! After that trip I have realized that I should the country's food, NOT MCDONALDS!

Dance performance

BANG BANG BANG BANG the loud drums almost had me cover my ears. It was so loud but yet interesting at the same time. On December 4th we had a performance in the gym which was about aboriginals and how they used to do things. It was in the morning and lasted about 1 hour long. There were 4 people in the dance 2 girls and 2 boys. I really liked how they sang songs from there language because it really show who they were and it showed there background.

During the performance they talked about many different things like stereotypes, about their culture and many many more. A very important message that was said during the

performance was to not bully or look down to another person just from how they look, how they are or how they act because we are all working together to make the world a better place. they were being bullied and looked down on just the way that they look and how they speak a different language. They even tought us some of their words in there langueage and it was really cool but unfortunately I don't remember any of them.

My favourite part of the whole performance as when one of the girls started to pick up 5 hula hoops and started to make shapes of animals with them. I really liked that part because it looked really cool and it must have taken a lot of time to work on making sure that she was able to hold all 5 hula hoops without them falling.

In conclusion, I think that the tribal dance performance was really good and I think it was also a very important thing to learn as well.

I think you should look at your post before you submit it. Your paragraphs seem to be very choppy and missing parts of it. I think you could add more visual detail to your writing. You could also add your opinions about the whole performance. Try to answer these questions in your writing!: What do you think about stereotypes? Do you think the message they sent about bullying was important? Your conclusion seemed to be very boring to read. Add more feeling to it. Otherwise, great job Ivan! You can finish your Alphabiography!!

Drawing

Ahhh!!! why can,t I get this right ...

So just this month I have been taking classes on Udemy that are for art and I would sometimes be annoyed because I couldnt' get something right. But now well I don't really need to be a perfectionist. so I wouldn't care and I'd just continue my lesson.

Right now i'm in the middle of gesture drawing. So if you will exuse me I'm going to continue my lessons.

I think that you need to add more these paragraphs.

Right now i'm in the middle of gesture drawing. So if you will exuse me I'm going to continue my lessons.

1. exuse =excuse
2. Not such a great conclusion
3. i needs to be capitalized

why can,t I get this right ...
1. can,t =can't
2. why = Why
3. ... is not the best way to end a sentence

I think that you will need some revising and you will need to add more to your writing.

Building my own ecosystem

It’s escaping again. The snail climbing desperately to escape this horrific prison he has been put inside. I don’t blame him.

I can sum this entire paragraph in one word, difficult. It is surprisingly difficult to creat your own ecosystem from scratch. There are so many things you must need to keep the animals inside alive: food, water, shelter etc.

But that’s the easy part, the difficult part is probably maintaining the ecosystem and being good stewards to the animals as Mr. Fisher has said. You have to clean, feed, and take care of the snail. You have to water the plants, remove moss and dead animals and so on. It’s also very disgusting to see rotten food and snail poop on top of the lid and everywhere.

But overall I still have to take care of the ecosystem and be a good steward for the snail and worms. Let’s hope that all of our organisms that were forced against their will to live in the ecosystem will live and make it out, alive.

Earthbites

"Yessss we're doing gardening" I thought as we were heading down the stairs to the school gardens. "Shiso" I thought. I will plant Shiso so I can take it home when it is fully grown and eat it. I got extremely excited. I was freezing outside but I was so excited that I didn't feel cold anymore.

Inside the class it was warm and cozy. A health instructor teached us how to do crazy level health tea with rose powder, ginger and honey. In my opinion it was a bit too sweet but it was really good. To do the tea, everyone did something. I poured one half teaspoon of rose powder into the mix. Earthbites today was pretty good but I liked the outdoor activity more.

Sophia lifted up the moss and I almost jumped back in horror. A gigantic… fat… speckled… erm… slimy thing was clinging to the moss! And worse, it was moving. Is that slime I see behind it? Oh… no. A slug? I don't remember us putting in a slug…

Making your own ecosystem is easier than it sounds (in my humble opinion of course). If you put some effort into finding the right things that grow and enough of them, it should be self-sustainable, for the most part. The hard part is actually attempting to make observations.

How hard can that be, you say? Well, it all went well when we first brought in our ecosystem. It was all nice and shiny and clean. I tried to find our animals, but they seem to have gone into hiding at the sight of us. Apparently, I wasn't looking hard enough, as Jorge found a worm… a disgusting looking cut-up worm in the first few seconds. We named him "Big Boy", as he was a nice chubby little worm. That was the last we ever saw of him alive, by the way. To this day he lies decomposing in a corner of the rocks.

Too much information? Well, get ready for more! We were required to weigh the animals that we could see. So we quickly grabbed the nearest one, which was an unlucky snail. Attempting to get him on a dish to measure proved easier said than done. At the sight of our probably gigantic-looking hands, he fled the scene at top speed. We managed to track him down again and forcibly picked him up and put him into the dish. But it doesn't end there! The snail stopped moving and started excreting a black colored matter that was… you guessed it… poop. (Or feces, if you want to be scientific about it).

After the snail had taken a dump in the dish, he once again attempted to escape. While we were preoccupied with weighing the ecosystem, he climbed over the edge of the dish. It was at that moment when Sophia picked up the dish to take it to weigh. The snail kept going down. It was quite literally defying gravity as it kept moving on the bottom of the dish. Though it's attempts to flee were quite futile, it gave us an excellent demonstration of how snails can defy gravity.

After a few observations, we got used to this kind of stuff happening. Everyone's become used to seeing snail excrement everywhere; but I still can't get over the fact how long their feces are.

But to be honest, it's really fun taking care of a mini ecosystem, seeing the animals move around their new habitat. If I were a snail I would have died of fright after being moving by giant fingers into a dish to be placed onto a machine daily to be weighed. I wonder if snails have a conscience?

"Too much information?"
"How hard can that be, you say?"
"I wonder if snails have a conscience?"

don't use rhetorical questions. Only use them in speeches, not in essays/writing.

"by the way"
^this is informal^

you used second person 5 times. try not to do this in essays unless if it is a persuasive one.

Earth bites: At first it seemed delusional; however, after being educated by Pablo, my understanding was profound. We had to design our garden using various concepts acquired from the gardening guide. Although we were being overtaken by struggle, Edward and I had endured until we had achieved the success criteria.

Our first conflict was arguing over selecting which plants to establish. Taking centuries, the argument was ineffective, yet, finding the plants on the brochure devoured more time. Not only did this affect our timing, but we had been delayed. On the other hand, we had concluded our first opinion, "China Express".

The rest of our period was still a slaughtered debate. Although Edward and I did not accumulate anger into the red zone, we, bellowing over each other's sentences, still have not develop a second part for the garden. What I did not anticipate was having time wasted. When we had conceded on the second plant, Pablo had announced a few more minutes. Having us into a rush convinced us both to use whatever we found eligible.

We scribble our arrangement and stammered in choppy sentences. Terminating precisely at the ending, we dashed to Pablo skeptically and reviewed our plan to him. This period I would not consider bad, nor would I say it was good. Many things could have improved, however, we still managed the criteria.

The drum sound echoed through the gym. Boom! Boom! Boom! I felt the floor shake as the dancer showed us his amazing moves.

Dec. 4, 2018 was the day Tribal Vision Dancers performed First Nations Dances in the gym in front of the whole school. They taught us about First Nations dancing and stereotypes on First Nations people.

The beautiful colours that a dancer wore caught my attention. The dancer spun quickly like a tornado. The bright colours of white, green, orange, and blue whirled in the air as the dancer did his wonderful dance.

Another performer went on stage and danced majestically like a flying butterfly. She wore a beautiful piece of clothing like a cape on her back. As she danced around, her cape would wrap around her and release her.

The last performance was the one I liked the most. A woman wearing a light blue dress danced with 5 hoops and made shapes with them so that the audience could try to guess what she made with her hoops. At the end she made a ball with the 5 hula hoops symbolizing the unity of this world.

I really enjoyed watching the performance and learned a lot more on First Nations dancing, culture, and stereotypes against it.

Letter E: Ecosystem Tour!

We walked all around town, catching every image worth snapping. Our feet were sore after 3 hours of manual labor, carrying our backpacks and photographic devices. The day was still young. The sun shone brightly against the surface of our lenses, creating a dancing glare as we moved through the great city of Vancouver in its hustle and bustle of 2018.

We were going on another field trip in the beginning of my seventh grade year. This was an educational field trip based on our upcoming science project of 'ecosystems'. We were to explore our hometown Vancouver, looking for different types of ecosystems and organisms to take pictures of and use as examples for our project.

We had to take pictures of things you need in an ecosystem, pictures of them doing their jobs ( or 'niches'), and how organisms interact with other organisms. Humans count as organisms, so finding multiple in a city like Vancouver isn't going to be very hard.

We began our journey at around 9:15am. Our route involved going to Langara Sky Train Station, hop off at Waterfront, and mosey-on to Coal harbor where we would be able to look over the Fraser River. After that, we would walk through Stanley Park and have a picnic down by the beach for lunch. This all took place in Down Town Vancouver, where there were many more high-rises and much more people walking along the sidewalks.

The experience was socially outgoing and there were many interesting things to see and snap pictures of. We had so much fun talking, and eating, and using our phones (for taking pictures of course *wink*). I laughed as my friends told me more about themselves and their past disastrously hilarious experiences outdoors.

We took pictures of animals in all sorts of habitats, streets, parks, and beaches. Everyone had taken, like, 200 pictures if they knew what to take pictures of. I know I took at least 750 (not kidding). There were many other interesting things to see as well, like a scuba diver coming up to the surface of the Fraser River, and a pelican standing so still, you would think it was just a statue of a bird.

Overall, the experience was quite enjoyable, and I loved that I was able to explore the nature surrounding my home town. I would love to do it again, if I ever got the chance.

The doll had a smile on it's face. I stopped dead in my tracks. My eyes were wide and empty absorbing the horror in front of me. She had pony tails on both sides of her head. Her eyes were looking at me and there was a tear of blood, trickling down her cheeks.

When I was younger and still today, I have an intense fear of dolls. Clowns were scary, but were nothing compared to the effect dolls would have on me. Chucky or Pennywise aren't anything compared to Annabelle. When I a brief glance, my body freezes. I look at he doll and it's looking at me. My clenched fists loosen until there nothing but clumsy, boneless fist like noodles. My usually relaxed eyes were widened and are focused on the doll. I can't take my eyes off it. For some reason Pennywise, Chucky are spine-tickling and scare me, but it doesn't petrify me. Only Annabelle can do that. She wears a dress and the fact that she manages to kill the whole family while putting a delighted mask scared me the most. She kills her victims with a knife, but so does Chucky but at least they know and I can see some innocence, but Annabelle. She strangles the living daylights out of me. She manages to make it seem so effortless, yet her execution is flawless. In conclusion dolls scare me and I hope never to make an encounter with them ever again

Ecosystem Fieldtrip

As I walk through the chill breeze. I have come to realize that Vancouver is gorgeous. We people are so much caught up in the hustle of other things that we often neglect to taste and appreciate the magnificent view right in front of us.

Our first field trip of the year was to take a walk around Stanley Park, and snapshot pictures of the different ecosystems. It had been raining the whole week, but we got lucky. It was a glorious sunny day. With compass cards and lunches, we headed to our destination. We took a short ride on the Skytrain to downtown and then started our walk. Fourteen kilometers. As we were getting closer to Stanley Park, we began to take more photos and try our best to document our observations and discoveries of the ecosystems on our way. The sun shone on us with warmth. The water along the trail was sparkling in the sunlight. We were exposed to the beauty of nature.

As we kept walking, we greedily breathed the most fresh air. Different creatures started to enter our view and we became more excited. For a while, as if the world stopped, only the noises of kids’ chatting and cameras’ clicks stood out. The background in which we were was so quiet. We could easily hear birds chirping and pay attention to the sweet aroma of the trees and other plants. The great satisfaction and joy miraclely filled me right away.

Around lunchtime, we took a rest and had lunch at the beach. As I bit into my sandwich I could smell the salty fragrance of the sea. It tasted like a “real sandwich”. Then we started on our way back. By then, everyone was tired. We forgot all about the pictures, our goal was to get back to school. It was a short way back, but even now, I still think of all the sights I captured during the trip.

Some Vancourians like to go sightseeing in other places, but Vancouver is worth your time to experience with distinctiveness every day! I now have a new goal in life. To spy something beautiful around and beyond me every day.

Skating, the one thing out of the few sports that Canadians are very passionate about. Us Canadians have breeded one the greatest hockey players ever to step on ice. Many decades ago, men like Maurice Richard paved the way for men today like Crosby and Mcdavid.

About 40 to 50 years ago, the Kerrisdale Cyclone Taylor arena was constructed. Darrel Sittler was the first to make this arena recognizable. Now, almost 50 years later, I step on this very rink in which one of the greatest hockey player ever has skated on.

About a week ago, Mr. Fisher took us to the Kerrisdale arena in which we skated around. The rink was as cold as ice, and having a T-shirt on was as useful as having air conditioning in the Arctic. I thought I was going to freeze, but my body heat barely managed to keep me alive.

When we got to the rink, everyone grouped together before going into the dressing room and getting our skates. It was absolute chaos in there, but soon enough, everyone was waiting at the doors, eagerly waiting to run onto the ice. Each person wanted to be the first, and so a lot of pushing and “Sorry” happened just before the minute hand struck 30.

The minute hand struck 30, and everyone began skating on the ice. There were some slips and falls at first, and I landed straight on my gluteus maximums, leaving a huge bruise at the spot of impact. Some people skated very gracefully and elegantly, while other people were moving slowly but surely around the ice.

I loved how the cold air was brushing against my face as I skated along, and it felt very good. Soon, I began to grow hot and stuffy in my jacket, and unzipped the zipper. I sighed in relief as cool air flowed through my jacket. It was like refreshing me after a long hot walk in the Sahara desert, and I felt amazing good after that.

We played a little ice hockey. It was really fun skating around and shooting the little plastic pucks into the net for the winning goal. I can’t tell you how satisfactory it is to assist. It felt just as good then to score a goal by myself.

I had an amazing time at the ice rink, and I can't wait to skate again.

C ---- Cessna

The pilot of the Cessna banked the plane. My stomach dropped all the way to my gluteus maximus. Then, without warning, the pilot voice crackled over my headset. "I'm going to hand these controls to you okay? On the count of three, you will have full control of the planes. I began to panic. Cold sweat poured down my face.

Soon, the pilot began counting down. Three seconds may sound like a short time, but during the countdown, my mind raced. The plane is too small, it's too fragile, we're too close to the mountains, I'm too young to die, I JUST CAN'T FLY A PLANE! [Anaphora] . It's surprising how so many things can pass through the human brain in a very shocking and near death experience.

Some thoughts that I were a little weird, but most of them was about by family. I thought about my big sister and my parents and every single fight and argument that I shared with them. I thought about every time when I cried in their laps, every time when I did something embarrassing, and every time I shared a secret passed through my mind in the meager three seconds.

The instructor behind me said in a reassuring tone, "It's going to be all right. As long as you follow my instructions, you are going to see tomorrow", after noticing my worried expression. No, that is an understatement, I was positively terrified. I got on to the copilot seat, and braced myself for the upcoming torture.

Immediately the plane suddenly dived, and my stomach lurched. I don't care how much mankind has accomplished, and how much people have defied all odds of science. Right then, gravity held all of the cards. I squeezed my eyes shut and just prayed that nothing was going to go wrong.'

Then, something happened. A wave of calm air whooshed through me and I opened my eyes and took hold of the controls. To this day I still don't know what happened to me that made me so bold. A voice crackled over the headset, "Okay, are you ready?". I was startled, I hadn't realized that he was waiting for me to get ready. I was extremely grateful to have him wait all this time for my scrambled nerves to get settled.

I had the best time of my life on that Cessna. The view of the farmer's land were all perfectly square. It looked like small pieces of jigsaw puzzles, all put together to make a one of a kind picture that would be forever emblazoned in my mind. If I never had calmed down, if the instructor had rushed me, if I was way too frazzled to do anything, I would have never enjoyed such a moment.

Trains

WHen I was little, I used to go on trains all the time. I like trains because it doesn’t make me have carsick. What I really enjoy is the railroads. I always ask my mom if I could see train videos, when I was like 5. It’s a very fast and safe way to get to places. Trains have really made my days when I was little.

Biology

Ever since I was small I was interested in science. It always interested me to learn about how we work. How are you and I standing or sitting right now reading this? It's all the little microscopical organisms in your body working hard. But how? And why? Well when I was four years old I finely thought of a job. I liked easy jobs, science and colors so why not be a color scientist? Yes its true. But if here ware space scientists there has to color scientists! Any way as I grew up of course my thoughts and feelings towards things changed. and My feelings towards biology grew stronger even though I didn't know what it was. As that changed I also started caring more about children. But at age nine my life was about skating. So I chose to skate. At age ten I still wanted to be a skater but I really loved to work with little kids. So I chose to be a teacher. Now at age twelfth I want to be a nurse.

I love biology because it's so interesting and challenging. When I study biology I always inquire even without knowing it. Biology always makes me feel better somehow. It makes me really think and I love that! I really hope I can be a nurse and study bio when I grow up.

E – Ecosystem Project

This year we did an ecosystem Project that we had to be in a group of four which was random. While we were doing the project we also had to find lots of organism that are a live and we had to weigh how much the living organism is. After that we had to do a data sheet so we can monitor the ecosystem insect.

Try adding more detail to your writing. Maybe you can write a little more. What else did we do in our ecosystem project? That's a good start though!
