Sociograms & prime factorization

10/12/2018

Amal Unbound Sociogram
Today we worked on our Plant ID assessments and our personal collages, which are coming along nicely. We continued with the Global Read Aloud and reviewed using the prime factorization method of finding all the factors of a number in math. In the afternoon many students participated in a SFU survey to help improve youth programs in the community. Thank you to all those who participated in the survey. We finished off a great week of learning by playing huge game of stones in the school year with division 2. What a great way to end the week! Don't forget to contribute to your household over the weekend! I'm going to ask you what you did to help out on Monday. Have a fantastic weekend!                                     #thelearningneverstops
1) Homework
  • Finish Thursday PAR: Give someone some feedback to help them improve their post on self assessing. Then revise your post based on the feedback you received! Very few did this! If you did not receive any feedback, self assess your work and make some revisions on you own
  • Write a second paragraph in your Alphabiograhy  (Have two Paragraphs complete and revised for Monday)
2) Reminders:
  • Show youR parents your Plant ID Assessment & Evaluation on Fresh Grade. We will the final project reflection next week.
  • Word Work- Unit 5 Test Monday
  • 50 Word Review Test Next Thursday: Next week we will have no new words but students will have a review test of 50 words form units 1-5. Students will have to spell 50 words and match 25 of the words with a phrase that shows the meaning of the word or the definition  of the word
  • PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE REVIEWING THE WORDS DAILY TO PREPARE!
3) Post A Response

POST A RESPONSE:
  • Read this learning reflection closely.  It meets the criteria for a quality learning reflection.  One of your classmates wrote this on FreshGrade (slightly revised):
  • 'On my pretest, I got 4/16 because the words were all new to me.  I knew that I needed to improve because most of the words were new to me.   So, I decided to practice and review the words each day. As a result, I got 16/16 on my final test, which is great! That means that I learned a lot over the week. I can clearly see that practice and hard work helped me improve! I met the learning intention by following the success criteria because I reached the learning intention.  I can spell the words, understand the definitions, and I also know how to use them in “juicy” sentences. I improved by reading the words and copying them a few times. I also memorized the definitions (even when we didn’t have it on the test). This allowed me to fully understand the words and how to use them. I can improve next time by writing more sentences to deepen my understanding further. Learning these words are helping me understand what Amal Unbound is all about. That’s how important and effective practice word work is!
  • List 3-5 criteria points you think you think should be required on all learning reflections based on what you read above.
  • Explain why you chose these points.
  • IMPORTANT: Do your best to mention points that have not been mentioned by your classmates.  However, Mr. Fisher and I do understand that there will be some similar ones.

____First I think that one should include their score and explain about their progress, which can help us understand how they studied.
Also, on should include their opinion on their effort. it can help us understand if they are satisfied yet or not. Finally, it think that it is important to include how one thinks they could improve. this could help the teacher understand how they could help them on their next piece of work.

I think you can call reflect on your work by doing this.
First you have to look at your score or how well you did, for example 6/16 on your word work pretest. You know that you need to improve because you inferred that you didn’t know the words and that the words were new to you.
I think that you should also think about the many ways you can improve your spelling or definitions. Such maybe reviewing or testing yourself everyday to remember the all the words and definitions.
You then reflect that you got 6/16 because you didn’t know the words. To help yourself improve you studied everyday and tested yourself and got 16/16.

One thing you should look for is their tests scores and or project. Then see what progress they made and ask them what they think they could improve on. Then you will put your input on their test/project. From their own feedback and yours, they will be able to decide what they could do next. It's always good to know the person's own opinion. We need to know both sides opinion to make a conclusion. As in from our inquiry project, You analyze the info you have and make a synthesis out of the info.

First you should look at your score and see what you’ve done wrong. You can then practice by writing it down multiple times and trying to remember the word, or the answer to the question.

Next, if you need help, ask for feedback or help. If it’s something like a powerpoint, ask how you could improve. You can ask for help also if you’re stuck on anything.

I can only think of two right now, so I’ll add to it later when I think of more

You'll need to know you're original score so you know what you can improve on. With that, you will know what you'll do to improve. Or you can ask others on what they think you could do. Doing a self assessment with yourself every time you practice, will help you know how things are working out when you're trying to improve.

8th,
I also think you should look at your score, reflect on what you did wrong and improve your mark next time you have a test or assessment in class or anywhere else.

Good job Kaden.
Next time, try to add commas.

I think that you should have a written record of your original status so that you could compare with the future you that had the extra training. For example, if I want to improve on my marathon time by 20 minutes. I would have to put down my previous time to see if I beat it or not.

I think you should also have a list of all the times you practice something. For example, if I want to build up my endurance, I would run everyday for the next 4 weeks. I should mark down all the days I have ran so I know that I stuck to the plan and ran for 4 weeks.

Lastly, I believe that you should brainstorm ways to improve yourself. You might need to search up how to have better endurance on the internet. You need to come up with a plan that is reasonable to do instead of running whenever you feel like it.

This is all I have. I will write more when I think of more ideas.

What if there is no score? What do you do then? The learning reflection criteria will be used for all projects and units, not just word work. Keep this in mind when completing your PAR.

What i would prefer to do is to look at what the teacher has marked. Look at any suggestions or comments the teacher has wrote. Something that you can do is look at the part you didn't do well in and redo that part and add all the things that are needed. After get feedback again on that part. If it is still not good then get someone to do it with you and review the criteria. If you get a mark then tell yourself next time i have to study more and get someone to help me with it.

There are countless things you could write on a learning reflection. But some I believe are essential to any reflection.

Firstly, you need to have some starting information to form a base for a learning reflection. I believe that the most important information to have is your actual project/work you are going to be reflecting on and any feedback you have gotten from peers or a teacher.

After you've gotten the basis for your self-reflection, you should write down what you yourself think about your project/work (your opinion.) Some ideas on what to include in your opinion - what you improved on, what you still need to work on, and how you would further improve your work if you had a chance to redo it.

Last thing to remember to do is not only focus on what you did well, or what you did bad on. Saying too many good things or bad things are both not that helpful, have a good balance of triumphs and failures, so to speak.

All I have for now, will add later if I manage to think of anything.

First you have to see what your score was for example 1/16 on your pretest. then you would have to figure out a way to improve,a way that you can improve is studying and put a lot of effort into it. If you are having troubles with remembering the definition or the spelling then maybe you can ask a class mate for feed back on how to remember it. Then finally once you do the spelling test you can see if you have improved or not. If you have still not improved or aren't satisfied with your score that just means that your have to work even harder on your next spelling test.

I had never learn thoes words before, my plan is to practice all the words every day, and I’ll write it on a paper, after that my mom will check it and if I got wrong I’ll do it agint

I think some criteria points that should be on your learning reflection. One of the most important ones is to write why you got the mark, you could have either have gotten a good or bad mark so reflect on why you got it. Another thing to add is to say how you could improve because there is always room for improvement. The last thing that you should include is wha you have learned because THE LEARNING NEVER STOPS!

Jorge

First look at your score and see if you must improve, for example you get 5 out of 25 on your pre test then you study and the next time you get 25 out of 25 on your unit test!

Then you need feedback on your work from teachers or peers so you can reflect and improve your work.

Finally if you need to do better just study or write down your work more often than last time and if it doesn't work just get help from an adult.

Vivian
10/14/2018 07:28:46 pm

First you need to know what you’ve done wrong or need improvment in. Because to improve on something you will know what you have to change.

For example a spelling test, you got 7/16 on the pre-test. But since it’s a pre-test it’s ok to get some of them wrong since the words are probably new to you. Here are some ways you can improve:

1. Write down the the words and definitions on a notebook and study every single day and test yourself.

2.Write the words on a blank piece of paper ever single day for that week. Try saying the definition out loud when you’re writing the word.

3.Study more on the definitions, because definitions are harder to remember than the spelling.

Not sure if everyone gets this, but plz give me feedback to make it more clear if you don’t understand! :D

“The learning reflection criteria will be used for all projects and units, not just word work.” - Mr.Fisher
Good job Vivian, but what if there wasn’t a score to start with? What if it was another project?

Vivian
10/14/2018 08:34:47 pm

Mhm, I think that if it was a Prodject(Power Point/Poster etc.) I think that you can either ask your peers or teacher for feedback. Then after wards, you can take the feed back and make the change! Thanks for asking! :D

Sarah
10/14/2018 07:35:50 pm

I believe that you should look at your score and decide on what you have to improve on then you should do whatever it is that you need to do to improve. Ask your peers for their opinions on what you could do to improve.

Matthew

The things that you should include in your fresh grade post is your actual grade. for example if you got Extending on your spelling test. You need to explain the things that you've done to get extending on your grade.
Example: I got perfect on my test because I studied.
If you didn't get perfect, then you might as well explain how you could've done better. You also would want to explain about what you could do to improve or get better next time.

Tom
10/14/2018 07:42:39 pm

I think you would have to know what you got on your pretest, then write down and study the words that you spelled wrong, and study for two days for about 15-30 minutes. You can also ask for your parent’s help. You can ask them to read out the 16 words and you can mark it after. Then find the definitions and study that for another two days. I wrote these points because I want to try and following these and see if it helps.

Effective reflection is essential to effective learning. There are a few critical steps or aspects that should be involved in all learning reflections.

First, discover where you are and what you need for the next step. Usually, this can be done by taking a pretest or diagnostic test. However, more importantly, when the test is done, you must be aware of what the test result implies, which means to think of what you do well and what you need to improve. From the example that Mr. Fisher has given, the classmate looked back at the mark and the words of the pretest, and concluded that he/she did not know most of the words in the list. He/she realized that he/she had to learn those words if he/she wanted a higher mark in the following test.

Next, form a plan and try some strategies in the next-step learning. After you find out what you need to do better, based on prior knowledge or experience, carry out a plan and adopt some strategies that work for you. For example, the classmate “decided to practice and review the words each day” (a plan), and “improved by reading the words and copying them a few times.”(strategies)

Last, look again, compare and generalize. Since you aim for improvement of learning, remember to check the work progress, compare the previous result with the newest one, and think about whether you improve or not. If you see improvement, think about and keep up what brings it forth in your future learning, including those strategies working best for you. Otherwise, test some other methods until you find something that is conducive to your learning. For instance, from the result on the final test, the way that the classmate chose worked nicely for him/her, and he/she continues to use it.

It is important to reflect throughout the learning process.

First of all, reflection has many facets. For example, reflecting on work enhances its meaning. Reflecting on experiences encourages insight and complex learning. To be reflective means to mentally wander through where we have been and to try to make some sense out of it.

So...

When, you reflect, you have to synthesize and analyze your information. As said in the above passage, I mentioned that when you reflect, you have got to go to the past and learn from it. That way, you know what to do next time you meet the same problem.

Learn from your mistakes. It is always good to learn from your mistakes or your success. Lets say you are trying to improve on running longer. From your previous trials, you decided to sprint everyday for 20 minutes. When you do a marathon, you end up failing because your body adapted to quick and intense motions, not rhythmic and steady ones.

Practice different ways in order to learn. If your way is to use the words in a sentence, that is perfectly fine. As Mr. Fisher said, "There are different paths leading into the same destination." However, it never hurts to maybe try a visualizing way or a way using mnemonics.

The most important thing is to PRACTISE!

Mr.Fisher

Annabelle

Learning reflections are very important things that show your learning. I have three points on what you might want to include on a learning reflection.

Firstly, you should state your goal. I think that stating the goal is very important because, if you don't have a goal, then what is your purpose of doing it?
For ex. I want to get better at basketball. I want to improve on my layups.

Secondly, you should explain how you reached your goal or what have you done to reach closer to your goal. This means that I think that you should include your effort.
For ex. I practiced doing layups every weekday after school for fifteen minutes for 2 weeks.

Finally, I think that it is very important to tell the person what did you improve on. You should include details when doing this step.
For ex. After two weeks of practicing every weekday after school, I finally improved on my layups. Before I started practicing, I could only make out 1 out of 5 layups. Now after my hard work, I could do 5 layups and score four in the hoop. I think that if I practice on my shots, then I could improve on my basketball shots.

I really think that these points are the key points to write an excellent learning reflection.

Annabelle

By the way, we need more grade seven girls and boys to join volleyball and basketball teams! So if you have time to go to the practices and games, then please come and play! If you think you are horrible at basketball and volleyball, just join anyways!

I think you should look carefully at the mistakes on the pre test and see what you spelt wrong and how you think your going to spell it on the test and write it all down and also ask for some of your friends for how they study and try to study in a efficient way

Nicole
10/15/2018 08:46:34 am

I think you should look carefully at the mistakes you made on the pretest and correct them. Then think about how you can rememberize the spelling words, for example you can take a misspelled word and write it out ten times. You can also ask your friends on how they study and if you really need to you can ask your teacher for feed back.
