Hi

Austin’s butterfly is similar to how we will learn this year. We will be doing the 6 big principles of learning and one of them is descriptive feedback, Austin’s friends gave him some descriptive feedback and he improved, which is an example of what we should do when we need to use the 6 big principles. When we get descriptive feedback it can help us improve instantly sometimes. And another thing which is similar about the story is that he made sure to keep trying until he got there, he didn’t meet one of the success criteria I believe, so he had to redo it with some feedback. For us we need to do the feedback before moving on and finishing so when Austin redid his it got better and better. And success criteria can make you go ask questions, and when you ask questions you get even more feedback, which leads to more improvement, and then it means going above the success criteria.

@Cindy-This is great Cindy. Please check the success criteria carefully to see if you misses anything. What did you miss? Make some revisions to improve!

Austin’s Butterfly
Watching this video really showed me how feedback and perseverance can make a lot of progress. When I watched the video with my mom, I never would have believed that the butterfly would come out so well because his first draft was not scientific at all. This relates to our learning because one of The Six Big Principles of Learning is descriptive feedback. This year we are learning to ask for feedback, then revise our own work to make it better. We are also giving feedback to other students, whether online or during class. It is worth watching this video and seeing how Austin improves his work because it is so inspiring.

Website
When I shared the class website with my mom, she commented about how informative the website was. She also liked how Mr. Fisher made a class website because it would increase social interaction during this COVID-19 crisis. It would also provide a platform for students and teachers to give helpful feedback. Overall, my mom really liked the idea of having a class website.

Austin's Butterfly

The Austin's Butterfly video is very representative of how our class will learn this year. It fits in with the Big six principles of learning. After completing out first attempt, we will get descriptive feedback from our peers. From then, we will revise and improve. This heartwarming story shows how we will learn new things throughout this year.

Website

Our class website is an amazing learning tool. Not only does this allows us to virtually connect to others through the web, we can also from other peoples work. After showing this website to my parents, they thought it was amazing. Everybody has a chance to be dependent on themselves to write and "Post A Response". Our class is very lucky to have such a beneficial tool.

In the story of Austin's butterfly, Austin starts off by drawing a simple butterfly. The Learning Intention is to draw a butterfly, with the Success Criteria to accurately portray a tiger swallowtail butterfly. In his first draft, he drew a simple butterfly that did not look like the tiger swallowtail butterfly. He asked the Question considering if he could do better than that and improve it. He then Self-Assessed his work and decided that he definitely could improve more. After getting Descriptive Feedback, he began his second draft. It was, of course, better than his first one. He then asked for more Descriptive Feedback, and began more drafts, up until he was completely satisfied. He then coloured it and took Ownership of it. With help of the Big 6 Principles, he improved his work from a simple drawing to a detailed one. This year I wish to become like Austin and improve my own work by using the Big 6 Principles of Learning.

This is how Austin's Butterfly is similar to the big 6 learning principles: Austin's classmates gave him descriptive feedback on his drawing. He listened and with the feedback he made his drawing better. This year in class we will be using self/peer assessments to improve our work. We should give specific feedback... with kindness, of course. It is important to be patient in the learning process because we may have to do many drafts.

I am really struggling to finish this assignment because it's taking too long. It's now 8:15pm, which is my bedtime so my brain is fried. I told my mom about this website in the car, but we didn't get to check it out until after dinner. My mom said the website was cool and informative. She especially likes all the pictures. Now I go to bed.... Zzzzzzz

This video did tell us how Austin start with a simple butterfly and by getting feedback, he can make a butterfly that look really similar to the actual image. Descriptive feedback is in one of the big six principal and is one of the most important principal because you can listen to other's feedback to improve your work. In Austin's butterfly, his classmate gave him feedback and Austin will listen and improve. On the first few butterfly, they just look pretty simple. Then starting on the fourth one, it looks a lot better by listening to the good feedback and at last, he can actually draw a real butterfly. This example show is that good feedback can really improve your work.

Website
I shared with my mom and she is amazed. She cannot believe how informative this website is. She said we can look at other classmate post and give some feedback to them and she think is so cool. Overall, my mom just like this website.

Austin's Butterfly is a good example for the fourth principle of learning, which is what we are going to follow throughout the whole year. The principle is called "Descriptive Feedback". In the story, Austin was trying to draw the "Tiger Swallowtail", at first his butterfly's wings were very round, unlike in the picture, it was kind of sharp. So his friends had told him where his mistakes were and how to improve it step by step and bit by bit each time. In total, he had made 5 drafts, and a final copy. Each copy got better and better, he had took the feedback he had received, and while he is changing it, he can use the last draft as a reference and see where his mistakes are and replace them with the feedback. He kept trying until his final copy is perfect, well, looks very alike. This is a very good example of what Div.2 should do this year (including the other principles).

I shared this website with my mom, and she thought this is very cool and organized, she thought it was neat that you can see all the assignments in detail so we all understand, and there were different channels to see different subjects and topics. She really like the post a response area, because that's where she thinks where we will ask ,our questions to each other and socialize. In conclusion, she really thinks this is useful and wonderful website.

Hi Gabriel,
I really like how your writing is very detailed and supported with many facts. One thing I would change is that sometimes you replace a period with a comma. Maybe you could check on that?

The video Austin's butterfly taught us a lot about descriptive feedback. It taught us to listen to others advice and make your work better and better each time.
When I first showed the Austin's butterfly video to my dad his response was " I really like this video and everyone should learn from it" He said that this video connects to giving others feedback. He also says that we should never give up and keep trying like the way Austin did, he tried again and again tell he nailed it.
My mom says the website is amazing and very useful for to every grade 6/7. She also says that we can learn a lot about The Big 6 Learning Principals and other important information.
Overall, both of my parents think that the website and Austin's butterfly video are both good influence for the class.

@Amrita-Great post! I sure like what your father says about never giving up! Good advice:)

The video of a child using advice from his peers has great meaning behind it and this is why. In the beginning, Austin needed to draw a butterfly for his project. The first try wasn't really good but his peers gave him encouragement and feedback to improve his current draft. After giving his many advices and many tries, he had made it a masterpiece. Descriptive feedback is one of the keys to be successful in learning. Using this knowledge from your classmates or teacher can really improve your skills on any subject your studying. For example, if you try to draw a blanket and draw a rectangle with no extra detail, no one will understand what you are drawing. With descriptive feedback, you can really change up your rectangle into a beautiful masterpiece. Adding details like making it 3d or adding colour may seem not as appealing but the truth is, it really helps brightens it. Sometimes you cannot just depend on yourself into doing something perfect. In fact, no one can and thats why descriptive feedback is useful. Even if you think you aced it, suggestions from other people may make it better. This year, we will be learning the the 6 principles of learning which includes descriptive feedback. Using these methods will make us learn fast and efficient. This is how austins butterfly relates to how we are going to learn this year.

Austin's butterfly is about taking feedback. When Austin made his first butterfly, it looked like the butterfly but not like the one he needed to draw. Then, his friends give him feedback on how to improve. Then, Austin listened and improved his butterfly based on his friends feedback. He kept on drawing butterflys until it was just like the picture. The way Austin's friends gave feedback was by being specific, since they were specific Austin was able to improve his butterfly better. This is what we are doing in our class called descriptive feedback. If we give good feedback and are able to listen, we can make really good butterflys.

Austin’s Butterfly
Austin’s Butterfly is a great example of descriptive feedback. In the first draft, the butterfly looked nothing like the model Austin was basing it off of. But instead of the teacher’s just taking it in and finishing the project, they said that Austin should do another draft and try to make it better. So, Austin had a critique group give him feedback and critiques so that he could make the second draft better. Austin started his second draft with all the pointers that he needed and when he was done, he created a much better butterfly. But he didn’t stop there, he did and third and a fourth draft. Then he added the stripes and the colours and when he was finished, his butterfly looked a lot better than his first draft. The story of Austin’s butterfly tells us that sometimes it takes multiple drafts to get it right and that perseverance and taking each other’ feedback into consideration is key.
