WELCOME TO MR FISHER'S CLASS

Welcome Ms. Chohan & Mr. Collins!

10/4/2018

Can you explain why these work? I bet you can!!!
Today we met the student teachers who will be working with Division 1 and 2. It was great to have Ms. Chohan and Mr. Collins working to help support the learning at Laurier. They will be joining once a week for the next 6 weeks. Students spent the morning working on putting together their Plant Identification Projects. It is amazing to see how much the projects are improving as students apply the feedback they are receiving. In Math, we finished up the divisibility rules for  4 and 8 and the afternoon was spent digging deeper into our mini inquiry questions.
1) Reminders and Homework:
  • Math Focus p 18 # 1-4
  • Word work unit #4 Test tomorrow (spelling and meaning)
2) Post A Response:
  • Group work can be great as we can share or knowledge, the work load, and we can capitalize on the strengths of the group. Group work can also be very challenging. We have to be flexible and open to the ideas of others. We have to accept the differences of others and can not always do exactly what we want.
  • In a short paragraph, explain two things that are going well in your Plant ID group and two things that have been challenging. Good writers add complexity to their work and explain why!!! In your piece, explain why these things are going well and explain how you have overcome or tried to overcome the challenges.
  • ****PLEASE DO NOT USE PEOPLES NAMES IN THE PARAGRAPH****
  • Give another student feedback on their post
  • Edit/revise your post based on the feedback you receive

We all agree on two things about group work, it can be very beneficial but it can also be very difficult to work with others. Here are some problems that our group has faced, and some things our group has done well on.

Our group had some problems with getting things done on time, so we helped support each other and got almost everything done. We also had a problem on our office 365. Some how, we couldn't share the power point to everyone in our group. But thanks to a work period, we solved or went around our obstacle and shared it to everyone in the group.
Our group is now almost done thanks to a lot of teamwork, effort, and class time. Mr. Fisher gave us some feedback on our rubbings and power point so we may improve more.
In a conclusion, group work is very difficult and it is a very useful skill to use when we grow older.

The plant rubbing has gone well because we used a new technique that is very efficient, the dried plant samples look awesome but still are very delicate. The typing for information and pictures research is very challenging because my group needed more computers but were still doing pretty good.

Two things that are going really well in our group is that we’re working together well. The reason why we are working well together is because we organized everything and we all agreed to what we wanted and didn’t. Another reason why I think that we are working well together is because we are getting feedback from others. I believe it’s very important to get descriptive feedback because it’ll help improve your part. Now two things that have been challenging are that someone in my group got sick for awhile so she didn’t get to do anything and we kinda had to organize what we were going to do without her. Another thing that has been challenging is that it took a while for us to figure out how we will showcase it. That was challenging because we wanted to think of something unique but their weren’t that many ideas that were very unique. In conclusion I believe that our ID plant project is going well with a few tiny roadblocks.

going well:
our group quickly decided on how we wanted to display this project and planned everything out quickly, another good thing was that we didn't really have any arguments and tried to include everyone ideas.

arent going as well :

Some people in our group wasn't really listening about what they should do ,and didnt do there part which definitely slowed us down. We also had to restart our poster because we though it was too messy in general and felt like we could do better.

but even though we had some road blocks I think in the end,as a group that we did pretty well on communicating and the poster

One thing thats going well in my group is that were all getting along an we have no trouble talking to each other and giving one another feedback. Were all making great progress. I believe that were working well together, we all know what were supposed to be doing and all have something to do. Two things that we were having trouble with is at first it was hard to understand what our job in the project. Another thing that was changing was that we have a group member who always asked me what to do even after I tell them what they should do. Over all I believe that our project is fun and going well.

Mr. Fisher

Your project is going well? This is good to hear! Thanks for you post, Sarah:)

vincent qi

______Throughout days of working in our group, many things have evolved. There are things that changes into a better situation and some which have demolished the connection of students in my group.

______My group has finally come to a conclusion on how we organize things. Up until the second last day of the project, my group has never organized any ideas for the poster. Also, having people with different fonts and sizes and borders can trigger one a lot. On the other hand, our group came up with a standard font and size, Times New Roman size 12.

______However, my project takes another deceptive turn. After we organized all our content, nobody has started to glue anything; therefore gluing everything tomorrow may result stress and overwhelmed with fear. Furthermore, one of my classmates files got deleted, delaying our group by printing it tomorrow.

______In conclusion, my project is not completely perfect, nor is it completely disorganized. Feedback and the learning principals can lead us to success. Otherwise, if something goes wrong, chances will result in failing. Fortunately, Mr. Fisher and Mr. Hong are willing to give extensions to the project.

Our group has had challenges and good things. Some of the challenges are, getting everyone’s notes done on time. And making progress without everyone’s notes.

We couldn’t really get everyone on the same page, because some people didn’t bring their note home. Or they forgot to do it.

Since the teachers said the due date was Friday. We tried as hard as we can to make progress. Even though we were still waiting for some of our teammates to finish the notes.

There are things that are going well, like we finally got everyone’s notes together and typed it up and printed it. Or we are very very close to finishing it.(80%done)

2 days ago we got everyone’s notes and got it typed up and printed. We cut them today as well as putting our poster together. We each made borders for our rubbings, to match the color of the descriptions for the plants. That’s how close we are! I’m so excited to see the end result!!!

Make sure your making your paragraphs properly Vivian. Try to use commas more because you had some unnecessary sentences that you wouldn't have had to make if you used a comma.

So far in our group, we have most things planned out so everyone knows which part they’re taking. Also we already gathered our information and it seems that we are able to work together. Some things that aren’t go so well is that although we have things planned out we tend to get distracted so that gives us less time on working. We also had one long period of time to work on our project but we only did a little progress. But overall things are going pretty well.

2 things I know that my whole group and I agree on is that, our project poster was somethings we didn't expect and our information sheets weren't either. That's a good thing actually. Before we had the worst poster. It wasn't following the criteria, like everyone else did. At first (person) and I thought that our other two teammates werne't going to do their work or help. So, we lost a bit of hope at the start. But, a couple days pass, I decided to take home the project and restart. I kept looking at it and it was a not a poster that I'm proud to hand in, even (person#1) and (person#2) agreed. After that day we had some confidence back. We found out that (person#2) did his information when we though he wouldn't. (person#1) and I was relieved. We just had to try to help (person#3) to do his work because he didn't do it at home. We tried to help him, but we needed a bit help. We asked Mr.Fisher some guidance and (person#3) started to do his work.

Overall this project was a big learning experience for everyone. There were ups and downs along the way, but we managed it. From where we started and where we are now, it is just mind blowing. I know it is just the first project of many, but it was one of my finest work and my team member's. I have learned all the learning intentions for this project and that first judgement isn't always right. Thanks to teh people who gave suggestions and feedback. Without them, we wouldn't have realized that we are able to do more then what meets the eye. :)

So far we've been pretty productive, except for the fact that we don't have anything on our poster. We have been able to find all the information, finish all the rubbings, sketch all the sketches, but we haven't typed our information or printed the whole of all our plants.
It is because of this that we can't put anything on our poster yet since every thing borders the information. We wouldn't know where to put the rubbings, sketches, whole plant pictures, or pressed samples of our plants if we don't glue down our information with a border. We also haven't put up our title yet which will be a problem if people don't know what the poster is about. My group and I were also planning on doing a video of us presenting with the poster, but we can't do that unless we actually put stuff on the poster, which we also can't do unless we print our information. See what I mean?!!

Mountain

Today our group did very well, everyone was productive and used THEIR TIME WISELY. At first it was a bit rough, we had a hard time organizing our poster and had a hard time to find a computer to work on. But eventually we got the hang of it, we organized the poster and did some typing. Most importantly is that everyone was on task and finished what they were suppose to. I think the biggest problem was just that it took along time to find ourselves a computer to work. But all in all I think our group was very productive and on task today.

GOOD JOB!!! To evrevery in my group.

In this plant project, my group had many ups and downs. We had times when we had lots of progress, and yet, we had times when we were just goofing around. However, I am pretty happy with my group and I believe that we work well together.

We work very well with each other. We take turns listening and we give and accept good advice. Everyone does there parts and everyone gets the equal amount of work.

We hare also very precise on time. For example, everyone finishes what they are supposed to do at the assigned date. If we were to research on our three plants by Monday, then we would had in our notes on Monday.

The bad thing was that sometimes, people get really off task. Sometimes, entire work periods go past without them doing anything. However, the next period, they work at the double the pace so I can't really complain to them.

The last thing that they need to improve on is be organized. Every single period, the tables are messy and everyone is running around calling out to each other and stealing each other's leaves.

To sum this up, I believe that our group is fantastic and that it was very fun to be able to work with them.

Joseph
10/4/2018 07:47:03 pm

Our group definitely had some ups and downs. Which is a huge understatement.

It may be surprising to know that we were doing quite well until today. Most of up got our work done, except one person. We did lose 1 plant but we were sure that we could find it in the extras pile. All seemed well, and with a few roadbumps and a little bit of work on Thursday and Friday we should have been able to finish it.

The following, which happened today, is an excellent proof of why I like - and dislike - group work.

It all started when we started doing our poster. I suggested that we just place everything on first, but someone else disagreed vocally. Before we knew it, we had escalated into a full-blown argument. The other person in the argument walked away with some our supplies, and we worked in the other room until recess.

One stroke of luck that we had was that we managed to find our plants after recess (not sure if they are all there, though). We're now deciding to do a slideshow instead of a poster, and after that it was pretty smooth going - except now we only have 3 members....

All in all, I can see why a group is better - and how it could work. I've learnt some valuable lessons from this. Most of our group were very agreeable and did their part, but some did not.

This project was and is a valuable learning experience for all the people in our group - some major roadbumps, but I'm sure that we can overcome them to be able to finish it in the end.

Would I do this project again? Maybe. Have I learnt a lot from this project? Yes.

-Joseph

Mr. Fisher
10/4/2018 09:04:02 pm

Thank you for your honest post, Joseph. I know things were a little bumpy today, but collaboration is sometimes just that. You did great in a difficult situation. I'm glad you feel you are learning along this sometimes rocky and difficult path of learning. Keep your head up and always ask for support from your teachers when you need it! That's what we are here for:)

Lucas
10/4/2018 09:24:54 pm

Joseph I have spotted a spelling mistake.

Most of UP got our work done.

Joseph I agree, we did have some challenges along the way but at the end of the day we did not lose all of our progress. I just hope that we can get all of this finished by the due date.

Jessica
10/4/2018 09:20:02 pm

Group work is definitely not easy. Not everyone agrees with everyone else. Sometimes we wander off, chat with others, and get distracted, but we all got our work done at the end of the period.
“Our destination is Granville Island. Some might to take the skytrain to Burnaby, than bus to Granville Island. Some might bike all the way and take a different route. But most importantly, at the end of the day, we all reach Granville Island, our destination.” -Mr. Fisher 2018
Today I think my group were all very on task, contributing to the project, and trying to get everything done. Sometimes I get distracted, but my group members were always very helpful, and reminded me politely to be focused.
Group work is definitely not a piece of cake, but through communication and understanding we can cooperate and work towards a similar goal and accomplish it.

Jessica
10/4/2018 09:46:40 pm

Revised:
Group work is definitely not easy. Not everyone agrees with someone else. Sometimes we may wander off and get distracted, but at the end of the period, we get our work done by all means.
“Our destination is Granville Island. Some might to take the skytrain to Burnaby, than bus to Granville Island. Some might bike all the way and take a different route. But most importantly, at the end of the day, we all reach Granville Island, our destination.” -Mr. Fisher 2018
Today my group members were all very much on task, contributing ideas to the project, and trying to get the work done. When I was a little tired and distracted, my group members noticed it, and politely reminded me to be focused, which helped me quickly back to the group job. As a group, the group members observe, monitor, encourage, and support one another. Through ongoing communication, the group can build mutual understanding and establish a pleasant, efficient interaction cycle. Therefore, as the group accomplishes the shared goal, its people enjoy both the success and the team spirit.

Mr. Fisher

I think the amount of work that we finishes today was very good because we were focused and on task. But here and there we got distracted and talked to friends but we got focused by reminding one another and helping them. For me I got distracted because I would get stuck at one point so I would just talk. But then my peers helped me on where I got stuck and I continued working. Group work is fun but hard but at the end we all have fun working together.
